PSA – Planet X London Road frameset for £150

Rode 375km at the weekend and miraculously didn’t die!
Probably cos it was a road ride (Dunwich dynamo double)
London Road + tubeless Barlow Pass 38c tyres were Awesome.SDW next week. I’ve ridden some of it on this but not all, yet.
jeffFull MemberRight, let’s try again… london road #2 is go
[Stem spacer madness trying to get the midge bars right…]
dirtyriderFree MemberBut this isn’t a cheap bike .. It’s a reduced bike there is a difference!
no its a cheap bike, with an inflated cost and then a reduction to something probably around its true value
ads678Full MemberOnce every disgruntled buyer has had a reasonable resolution from Planet X I’m very sure it will be,
What in your opinion is a reasonable resolution?
I’m happy with mine for what I paid for it and so are others it seems. Only seem to be 1 or 2 that are not happy.
PX have responded to my emails and I have them for my records, so as I said before if it cracks within warranty they don’t have a leg to stand on. Out of warranty? Well if i get 2 years out of a £150 frame i’ll not lose any sleep. Its cheaper than bus fair!!
HoratioHufnagelFree MemberIt seems some people have paid 150, and are happy to shim it or find a 31.8 seatpost to resolve the issue. This is fine, i’d probably be the same.
But that doesn’t mean other people, who may have paid full price, are being unreasonable in expecting Planet-X to supply a frame with the correct size seat tube, or a refund – which they are refusing to do (at least for me).
I won’t be using them again.
ioloFree MemberWhat in your opinion is a reasonable resolution?
That they supply what they advertised or provide a refund. These were not “seconds” of inferior quality. They were advertised as sale items. Combined with the usual Planet X/On One exemplary customer service its shambolic. An absolute farce.
Accepting it and bodging to make it work means the next frames they sell on the cheap will be exactly the same poor quality as these.
According to some on this thread, thats fine.thestabiliserFree MemberMaybe you could swap the baggyness for a bit of the lack of tyre clearance on the El Guapo 29er? Or club together and buy O-O/P-X a ruler.
woody74Full MemberWhy do you think they were reduced to £150? They probably knew they had an issue with this batch so are selling them off cheap.
If you are not happy send it back under the distance selling rules. If they don’t play ball then have a chat to your credit card company and put a claim in.
I do however agree that Planet X should have a solution such as sending out free shims. It’s not like they are expensive.
ads678Full MemberDon’t get me wrong Iolo, i think PX are out of order for not giving you a refund as the frame is not ‘as advertised’. I just don’t think it’s fair that some people seem to have a attitude towards the ones on here that are happy to accept the frame as it is and get on with it.
I also accept that they were not advertised as seconds but they are very cheap. Even at full price they are not expensive so I would not expect Pinarello standards. Buts that’s just me.
I’m not happy that my seat post choices are limited because of the larger diameter seat tube but I just don’t see it as a massive deal as it’s relatively cheap bike for commuting duties, and can be made to work perfectly fine for not a lot.
PX did say to me that they are thinking of supplying this frame with a 31.8mm seat post as standard from now on, but also do not have any in stock! I do think they should send one out FOC to every one that has bought the frame though.
dragonFree MemberEven at full price they are not expensive so I would not expect Pinarello standards.
They aren’t that cheap really though £300 for a frame that doesn’t even come with a headset. It’s the frame for a bike that’ll come in around £900-1200 depending on groupset. The build quality on a Trek, Giant, Spesh etc. around the same price point will be way better.
ads678Full MemberFrame and Carbon fork. Although yeah a headset would be nice. And you can buy the full bike for £699.
swdanFree MemberOff topic from the other discussions that are going on.
I’ve just put my 105 5700 levels on and correct me I’m being stupid but I’m going to need longer brake cables than the supplied ones aren’t I?Does anyone had any recommendations for some reasonably priced ones?
cookeaaFull MemberI ordered some goodridge outer priced per meter from CRC for the front, already had enough SRAM outer for the rear, some spare stainless cables I had knocking about… Quite impressed with the goodridge outer actually.
morph027Free MemberJust finished mine…
Alfine 11 with Versa. Chain tensioner is way too loud, any hints?
Rack, Light and mud guard are waiting for some small parts to arrive by mail. First short ride was lovely so far (coming from years of mountainbiking 😉 )
morph027Free MemberTY
Chain line is Alfine default (42,x or something)
Without the pulley, it’s silent. I’ll just ordered the Alfine tensioner to try.
flybywireFree Memberloving the london road, good & versatile – grippy tyres fitted but rolls well.
How’s your LR/commute – cookeaa? send email to profile..swdanFree MemberThese complete builds are looking nice. I’m so close to finishing mine, just cables and bar tape to go! Hoping to get it sorted by the weekend so I can take it out for a quick spin.
cookeaaFull MemberIt’s going very well actually FBW, I’ve used it to do the Kennet tow path a few times now and I’ve used it for some mixed on/off-road type rides around Ufton/Mortimer/Silchester ways, and took a bit of a detour via Greenham Common – Woolhampton on my way home the other week.
I sort of end up riding along on the roads just looking for opportunities to dive off into some woods…
Riding it offroad it sort of reminds me of my first couple of MTBs, rigid, nippy fun ot zip about on al sorts of surfaces, nothing like the comfort and grip of a modern MTB, but that’s not really the point is it…
The 35C nobby nicks are OK, they roll better than I expected them to on Tarmac, can squirm a little offroad, I will have to try and run them tubeless soon I think.
The Gearing is OK, still using the 34T ring, which is good for climbing but I’ve not yet actually needed to go all the way up to the 32T out back, not really worried about spinning out but a little more top end would be nice, So I still need to change that, but there’s no rush it’s more of pootle than charge! type machine.
I have reverted to the fixie for commuting this week as it’s a bit drizzly (Guards) and the road route is still a solid 15-20 minutes quicker each way…
the LR is going to be brilliant for riding round here come winter, especially the odd night time on/off road blast I reckon, the sort of thing I used to use my SS MTB for…
Reckon we should organise a West Berk’s/South Oxon chapter STW Gravel ride soon…
Edit:
Here you go, Nonchalantly leant against some railings down by the Kennet…
crashtestmonkeyFree Membercookeaa, as an Oxfordshire-based non-London Road owner, you missed this (or maybe you didnt)
gpx route on the site too, I think, to follow for free. Chilterns version of Strade Bianche.
cookeaaFull MemberI did miss it, but I like the look of the route, I’ve picked up the Ridgeway from Streatley before but not followed it that west far, or looped round Lambourne Downs, I think I might just try and find the time to do it anyway,
Cheers….
flybywireFree Memberbeen watching the tdf.. 🙂
Superb & yeah riding the rough surfaced lanes/tracks & towpath around here the bike is comfortable & quite responsive. Fitted with a 34/50t compact & smooth tread tyres is more road bias.
@cookeaa – keeping it simple with a single chainring = less maintenance, for off-road 34t is similar to riding a 29er and that range of gearing which I would think is ok. No likewise Wasn’t expecting the drizzle/rain yesterday and this morning but not keen on mudguards in summer as a rule though! (probably fit about end september ish)
Great link; white road sportif and route info. keen to ride that!.. been doing lots of riding over Compton,Aldworth,Goring with “workmates team” – good idea cookeaa to set up a “gravel grouprides syndicate”
ttfn
beejFull MemberI did the White Roads Classic (another West Berks rider here), Scott CR1, 28mm Schwalbe One tubeless, 80psi. Slightly bumpy and the off-road stuff probably more fun on a grrrrvvvl bike but it’s mainly a road route with a few byway sections.
Good event, nice and small, excellent food, prosecco at the finish, friendly people riding.
swdanFree MemberHere it is, finally finished. I blame having a 10 month old daughter for the delay
Shimano 105 5700, Deda post and stem, FSA omega compact bars and wheels and discs off a Boardman cx comp that I got a good deal from a fellow forumite on. Took it for it’s first outing today to work and back on a mix of road, parks and gravel and must say it was great fun, makes me want to ride like a hooligan!
morph027Free MemberNow with 28c tyres and mud guards….commuting never was so fast 😉
thepeginatorFree MemberFirst post, Hi all!
Been reading this thread intently as I’ve just ordered myself one of the last £150 frames that they had which I’ll be building up as a winter roadie with some possible light touring duties, basically it’s to become my main bike so my Tarmac can become my ‘sunday best’.
I read all the issues people were having with the headsets and I did some digging, the SHIS ID number for the headset appears to be: IS42/28.6 | IS52/40
I’ve found a few options for headsets that should fit that are cheaper than the FSA option, hopefully it might help somebody out:
Cheap shop brand:
On their ebay store
On their websiteRichtey Comp: Top and Bottom (pick the ones that match the SHIS number)
Richtey WCS: Top and Bottom (pick the ones that match the SHIS number)
Hopefully this helps someone!
thepeginatorFree MemberAlso.. has anyone had any experiences with Shimano’s CX77 brakes? I’m kitting my build out with 105 5700 so I figured keeping with shimano brakes would help everything work together nicely. I’ve heard apparently the newer brakes/levels (5700/6700 onwards) have a different ‘pull ratio’ from older stuff and it’s all optimised to work together.
One more thing! Have people found the rear brake works better when you run a full length outer to it? Thinking it might be worth doing for the rear brake and mech as this bike is going to be going out whatever the weather and my club have a habbit sometimes of using the kind of tracks you probably shouldn’t take a road bike with skinny tyres!
cookeaaFull MemberThe Frame is designed to use full length outer/hose for the rear brake, make sure you get non-compression outer…
I am using full length outer for the rear mech you can piggyback it on the brake ties then tape and zip tie it along the Chainstay, doesn’t look very neat, and you are left with unused cable adjuster bosses at the top of the downtube…
thepeginatorFree MemberSounds like a good option, cheers! I notice PX do rolls of cable outer, might have to get some.
cynic-alFree MemberCX77s as good as BB7s for me – I use both. Latter easier to adjust tho.
cookeaaFull MemberDifferent question for othe LR owners;
Is anyone making use of the “low-rider” bosses ~1/3rd of the way up either fork leg?
I want a way to carry dry bags and that position is more out of the way. A nice minimal low rider rack or something like an anything cage that could pick up on those bosses would be great… anyone?
thepeginatorFree MemberFor anyone interested, the FSA no.42 headset is back in stock on the PX website.

Aren’t they mudguard drillings? Might not be in the right place for the traditional low rider type panniers (or indeed up the job of carry that sort of load).
richardthirdFull MemberI use mine for mudguard fittings, seem sturdy enough. SKS Touring 45s.
My LR’s had some amazing trips in the last few weeks. Much of the SDW, 220mile ride Dunwich dynamo double, Hilly road day touring in wet Scotland, then Ride London @ 34.9kph average. All on Compass Barlow Extralight 38c tyres tubeless.
wickiFree Member@ Jeff

Wouldn’t mind getting back what I paid for it will bung in new headset and postage
