I would hope it has already been stated but the answer is Zacapa.

Great minds DrP! Was just about to write about the virtues of Seadog. Very sippable indeed and at £15 a throw definitely worthy of a punt.

Mount Gay have just recently changed both the Black Barrel and XO so need to try them again

I discovered Black Balla recently. Wow. It’s like black treacle. Imagine Diplomatico Reserva if it was reduced down a bit.

I also bought a bottle of Dark Matter, holy crap, that’s awful. It’s just like someone’s thrown a bag of cloves in the cask.

That Plantation 5yr old is great. However concur with Dark Matter comment above, mouthwash!

Don Papa is odd. I really like it but can understand the doubts about its provenance and what exactly has been added..

Got my eyes on a bottle of RL Seale 10yr, apparently it’s the bees.

PSA: If you haven’t been watching, Mount Gay changed the recipe of Black Barrel so its now left in Bourbon barrels for longer and has older/ pot stilled content.

Anyway, its currently reduced on Amazon: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Mount-Gay-Black-Barrel-Double/dp/B085WJY6K2/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=black+barrel+rum&qid=1598296107&sr=8-1

Its not a sipper thats for sure.

But chuck in some fresh lime juice and a splash of ginger beer and its bloody fantastic.

I went to Costa Rica at the beginning of the year and drank some lovely rums. Brought back a bottle of Centenario 30yr old which the most sippable rum I’ve had.
I can’t find it anywhere back here though so I’m having to ration it until I can afford to go back to Costa Rica!

@muttley109here you go. May be cheaper to go back to Costa Rica!

Bloody hell! I bought the 30yr, 25yr and a 20yr together for £118 in San Jose airport.

St Nicholas Abbey is one of the best I have had. The St Lucia distillers 1931 is also good. Week on week is the m and s bajan rum, really nice for the price, quite sweet as opposed to delicate.

I know many purists lamented the original Sailor Jerry recipe but I never tasted it, so perhaps I’m fortunate for not knowing the difference between the original and the current version. But I am a big fan of the current version. I find it very balanced and easy to drink neat. Obviously I’m not a purist or rum snob, it just tastes good to me. Cheers! 🥃

Dead Mans Fingers is my go to rum for drinking straight. Lovely stuff.

Kracken wasn’t that great, Twin Fin was all hype and tastes a bit like Malibu.

Newbie as far as rum is concerned but OH got me a bottle of Salford Dark Spiced for my birthday and it’s bloody lovely over ice. Keep meaning to look for a decent ginger beer (Fentimans?) to try with it.

I basically know nothing about rum. But bought a bottle of this on a whim

And it’s actually bloody lovely. Normally a single malt whisky fan but this is as nice, but different.

No idea why everyone rates Mount Gay. The stuff tastes like TCP, smells like it too 😕

Well, it won a few World Rum awards lately across different blends and vintages.

Currently on Diplomatica Reserva, I find it goes down well as both a mixer and happy to sip it, but my god do I get a hangover. Probably a bit sweeter than I like but it’s still drinkable.
Any suggestions for a similar smooth sipping rum that doesn’t have me in bits the next morning? It’s that bad I can’t drink it on a school night. Budget up to around £50.

I got a bottle of this a few weeks back. There’s not a lot left. I don’t always spend this much on Rum, usually it’s £20 tops for Dead Man’s Fingers or similar.

@w00dster just over budget but very nice. Got a bottle from my best man as my wedding present.

@CaptainFlasheart tried a number of homegrown rums but they’ve been universally awful. Small distilleries jumping on the bandwagon to try to grow sales.

I’m currently on Flor De Cana 12yr, which is normally £35 bottle, but got it in asda for a reduced price of £26, a fair saving .
Taste – very delicate, no great burn, more warming i find. Certainly one you can enjoy without grimacing.

I still rate Stroh as the best(read most dangerous) stuff I’ve ever drank. They do a spiced now 😀
Found a YT vid and 2:09 is best first taste reaction.

Recently discovered my second favourite dark rum. Greedy Fox.

Tastes like burnt caramel and honeycomb.

On the basis of your question I bought a bottle a couple of months back. It’s good, but unusual. Has the distinctive initial flavours of a young spirit (think ethanol) but then rounds out nicely into a deep cane sugar and light citrus treacle after taste. It’s surprisingly decent (far better than Mount Gay which is “thin” in comparison) but don’t expect the kind of maturity you get from Penny Blue etc. I’d say with a bit more experience they could be onto something of a winner.

This is mighty fine from Kit of these parts. I’m no connoisseur but it’s the tastiest rum to have slided down my gullet (and profits to charidee).

Save yourself some money – don’t pay £50+ at the whisky exchange; Waitrose have this at £10 off their normal price of £49 so now…£39!
    Absolute bargain.

Just finished a Diplomatico Reserva Exclusiva following a recommendation on here, very tasty and not as heavy? as Kraken.

Keen to continue expanding my Rum tasting, any update on the previous recommendations / bargains out there.

    many thanks

Holy Moly. I’ve been going through a spiced rum phase, and at the weekend I discovered this:

For anyone thats familiar with the Caribbean, Chairman’s Reserve is very good, but with the spiced version they’ve managed to create it with overtones of Rum Punch, yet its not sweet or sickly. It just become my new favourite sipping beverage and is currently on Amazon for £25. I implore you to give it a go.

Currently on this – Banditti club, Glasgow spiced rum. 44% £27/500ml

” Banditti Club Glasgow Spiced Rum is named after a band of ardent spirits who would meet in Glasgow’s local public houses in the late 18th and early 19th century; singing, eating and playing music late into the night.

Matured and spiced in Glasgow, Banditti Club is made using rum distilled from freshly pressed sugar cane juice on the Island of Madeira. Aged for 12 months in oak casks, Banditti is spiced with a selection of fresh tropical fruit and exotic spices, including pineapple, orange, cacao and allspice.

Natural sweetness and warm spice on the nose, Banditti Club opens up to toasted pineapple and orange on the palate with notes of clove and anise that lead to a long spicy finish.

This is a truly handcrafted spirit of the highest order with no added sugar, no colouring or any artificial flavours. Banditti Club Spiced Rum is an all-natural product that is best mixed with ginger beer or cola with a wedge of fresh lime.”
