Yep Clink, that’s the real solution!

To be fair I think the majority of frames in the Evo genre were intended to be run with a single front ring and the use of 2 * and 3* chainsets was an option rather than what they wre designed around.

Here’s the mod you need to do….:

I believe the front mech modification is the same that Cy recommends / has to do for the Solaris.

1×10 is really the best way to go 🙂

Tomaso, I’ve got an old LX 9sp mech on which works, so I’m guesing most Shimano bottom swing mechs will fit…

The fact that Brant’s on here sorting out problems and giving advice is appreciated. It’s one of the reasons I go back to On One for frames (well that and the way they ride).

    Thanks.

Everyone who is constructively contributing to this thread is entitled to three free pints from me in Old Gate in Hebden Bridge whenever you want.

TBF this problem has been around since even the first scandals in 2007.
Had to tweak a dual pull conventional mech for clearance then.

All worked fine after that. And looked a bit tidier too really.

Bottom swing … as in conventional? Happy to have a go hacking at mine if need be. I have an FDM661, an X9 and an old XT available … all conventional bottom swing. Also have a Dremel I’ve never used 🙂

Edit: thanks Stoner … even I can do that mod.

I don’t think I’m buying a Fireline (not what I want at the mo) but the above makes it much more likely I’ll buy an On One in the future.

    Though personally I’d 1×10 it

There you go. Really chaps, do you need a front mech? Take your triple crankset, put a nice SS chainring in the middle (hard wearing, deep teeth, no shifting ramps etc etc), and drop the mech, shifters and cabling. And free up the bit of your brain that does front shifting and devote it to enjoying your ride.

And thats the front mech mod required for the newer Turner Sultan 29ers, so sounds like quite a common issue, not peculiar to On One?

To be fair, it’s the fault of Shimano for being lazy with their front mech production 😆

Edit: Actually, thinking about it, I would say that the number of bikes frames/designs with this issue highlights that Shimano need to be listening to users / manufacturers and responding to demand. There is clearly a design / compatibility issue with their current cost saving design and the market has changed and they need to be listening and adapting.

This talk of 1×10 is all very well, but is very dependent on where you live and ride. I live in Highland and and my bread and butter ride is a 1500 foot climb up Cnoc Fyrish from my house. I would definitely be off pushing much of the ascent on a 29er with only a 32t up front and even 36 on the rear. That’s not what I want from my main HT.

XX1 may be the panacea, but I can’t justify the cost.

Metalheart and Stoner – thanks those pics are useful. My old non-dual-pull LX mech fits, so yes, perhaps Shimano need to revisit their design and go back to top and bottom-pull specific mechs, given the rise in popularity of 29ers? Would prob put the price of mechs up though unfortunately…

So are we saying that you have to hack a mech up and run a 2.1 tyre and not go out in the mud….

Please don’t respond with ‘go 1 x 10’ as it simply doesn’t work for the vast majority of people for the bulk of their riding.

Actual clarity on the front mech issue is what i’m looking for, Brant i am happy to buy you 3 pints to find out if this frame is right for me. Plus I could go riding for a couple of days… ummm… barman!

Dunno about that mate. 1×10 with a 32T front sprocket really is pretty steep climbing gearing on an MTB?

Not sure where the 2.1 tyre only and not going out in the mud comes from??? No the consensus seems to be if you want a short chainstay 29er then be prepared to compromise, otherwise go out and buy a long chainstay Ti29er such as a Salsa Mariachi ti or a Lynskey for twice the price 🙄

EDIT and in anycase wont a top swing/low clamp work better here as it moves the clamp below the point where the tyre is closest to the seat tube

    pistola

Andy, no the top swing mech has the pivot mechanisms and cable clamp sitting behind the seat tube and above the level of the clamp, right where the tyre clearance is at its minimum. Conventional top clamp/bottom swing mechs have all of this more to the side. This is certainly the case on all the Shimano mech’s I have to hand.

People have been cutting up down-swing FDs like that for a long time, seems a sensible mod.

There is clearly a design / compatibility issue with their current cost saving design and the market has changed and they need to be listening and adapting.

they already do – the newer direct-mount FDs with the modified cage shape. But direct mount frame fittings look can ugly / be unnecessary for 1x set ups, I like the trimmed down-swing mech option. Jones bikes have been built up that way for ages, there’s not a lot of mud room on mine with a std top-swing mech and that has a curved ST and stays over 435mm.

    News from Neil:-

“X9 2×10 fits a treat, plenty of clearance, no mod needed! Top clamp, bottom swing.

X0 and XX are the same so will be fine, not sure about X7 as they have a bulkier clamp design as opposed to the nice neat steel band.”

    Picture coming shortly.

Any way of testing X7 … there’s a groupset I’d buy in the classifieds if I knew it would work.

There’s actually a bit you can cut off those X9/XO (and X7) mechs that would give even more clearance too. Neil says no point. I would though.

    Pic… Hang on.

I don’t know if this helps anyone but here are a couple of pics of how far I got last night. It shows the closeness of the rear tyre, but that is a 2.3.

My dual pull XT front mech defo won’t fit though 😥

Seems a bit smaller than my 456ti, shorter wheelbase and top tube. Not sure how that will affect its ride, as a 26er I’d think I’ve bought a size too small? Time will tell.

    weeksy

Hans Dampf on a Flow going in in the next couple of days. Given this is the 29er rim/tyre of choice right now I’ll let you know.

Just checked mine over and despite me being pished it looks wonderful.
