If anyone were to be sufficiently inspired to use Google to find the diet he would find that they are arguing about it on Pistonheads too.

    day off = food carnage

otherwise you won’t get huge losses

Music to my ears (or whatever the stomach equivalent is).

So pigging out to the Nth degree is guaranteed to pay off more than just kind of going for it? That sounds awesome – just can’t figure out in my head how that works. I’ve always gone for it but sometimes held back thinking too much carnage is gonna be anti-good.

EDIT: I take it this is too far?

Stop just before the waffer sin mints and you’ll be ok.

Big helping of chickpeas last night, half a tin of beans with brekkie this morning – big improvement in how I feel.

    Also 84kg. Come on!

Results in for week 1 in our office:

    Me: 4lb
    Sarah: 8lb
    Alex: 3lb
    Carol: 4lb
    Amanda: 3lb

    Few more started this week…

8lb, well done. the best i ever dropped was 5lb in one week and that was after a week of plasterboarding on top of my diet/riding regime last summer.

but now i’m giving this idave lark a go too after following the threads from the outset, taking on-board some of the info, but never going full-on. utter frustration from putting on a stone and then some from my lifetime low of 12st5 late last august was my tipping point.

can’t really comment on weight loss just yet as this will be my first full week (last week was mon-fri but with booze and the week before i fiddled around with it for a few days only).

but i have noticed over the last few weeks even just dabbling that i feel far more energetic and way less bloated/sedentary than i have in ages.

sc-xc, that’s brilliant. My parents have each lost a stone in a month, and feel amazing, given that they’re getting on for 80.

Tell your colleagues well done from me, and send them this link 😉

Had a relatively strict week last week, binged to the n’th degree form Saturday lunchtime untill Sunday evening.

Monday morning (after a binge at the carvery) – 96kg
    Friday morning – 93.8kg
Post weekend binge Monday morning – 94.6kg
    Tuesday morning – 93.9kg.

Not been shopping this week so have had some carbs as no fresh food in the house.

FWIW I bought the 4hour body book, lot’s of “Facts” which may well be true but you can easily tell he’s neither an expert nor a scientist, although he seems to have gotten results.

Tinned pulses/beans/tuna = emergency iDave rations.

I would have thought a binge at a carvery, is essentially a normal day on the diet?

Tinas – good stuff. The 4HB was interesting from certain points of view. I thought of it as a leader for further investigation – and I suspect he did too. Scientific studies are often very narrow and deep, but his stuff was far broader which added an interesting slant to things I reckon. He did stuff that studies don’t do and asked questions much as you would if you were trying to figure stuff out for yourself.

I never seem to put on weight on my binge day. Maybe I need to binge harder?

Pesky scientists and dieticians, actually looking in depth at a particular area as opposed to producing generalised bullshit to make it sound like you know what you’re talking about.

    Bastards!

I know. Peer reviewed studies are just for squares. It’s time to think outside of the box….and the box is a car park….full of snails.

Oh don’t be so defensive Dave. I know Mr Ferriss is you’re buddy an all, but it’s ok for me to not like the guys style and to stick up for the more traditional methodology of scientific research…..which at the end of the day is what Ferriss has read and reproduced some of in his own jazzy-ass way.

Along with your fine work of course.

How’s everybody getting on with the diet? 3 weeks for me and my gf now, and we thought we were doing well with what we were eating. She’s lost 3-lb’s (in the first 2 weeks, then nothing for this third), and I’ve fluctuated +-1 at the same value. Although the 3-lb loss is excellent and in the right direction, it’s not something that couldn’t be achieved on any other diet combined with a bit of exercise. I’ve noticed energy levels are more consistent, and I am enjoying the meals and food types we eat. Having looked into the diet more, and the mechanisms behind it, I think this is a step in the right direction, and generally believe in it, but the rate at which it is working isn’t grabbing me.

Because of this I have revisited the official plans, the first email that was sent out, and then the RST google doc. We have both been very strict, with the only discrepancies through lack of understanding. The main one is ryvita (rye), which I’ve realised (thanks to another forum member) is a cereal grain and so not allowed. Although with others losing so much, and some being mostly strict and still losing a fair bit, I’m wondering where else we could be going wrong. I read that this diet is effective down to 10-12% body fat, which i ‘may’ be near, but my gf is a probably above that, so i don’t think that is an issue. I drink around 6-8 pints of water a day, the gf less so, around 3, and we are increasing our intake. Binge day is pretty bingy, with a lot of stodgy carbs, and I mean a lot. Nearly a whole 500g bag of pasta last week (mmm).

Is anybody else finding it not quite as effective as anticipated from others’ feedback? I was hoping for 2-lb a week as a reasonable rate of loss, or am I expecting too much? Has anybody come to a weight which they cannot seem to get below?

    iDave

The 10-12% figure is for males, 18-20% for females

Are you really going for it on the days off?

quick related question… does the time that you eat your evening meal make any difference? we eat quite late, 8.30 to 9pm, and i was told that it was too late and is a reason why i struggle to lose weight.

    anyone know different?

My post was not meant to be critical of scientists in any way. I’m just outlining the differences between this book and proper science. Whilst the author is way less rigorous his escapades still have value IF you take them for what they are and not hardcore science or guru teachings.

The book’s value is as a record of what he did, I reckon – not a manual of how the body actually works. It’s got too much conjecture in it. However I can’t quite tell if he knows this and is just making it into a self-help style book to sell copy, or he really believes he has all the answers… I suspect the former.

Not sure yet. Struggling to get below 84kg which funnily enough is the same weight I plateaued at last time I successfully lost weight. However it’s only been a few weeks and those weeks had some issues, so I’m still expecting to go lower. I do feel as though it’s getting much harder now than it was at first. I think my body’s putting its foot down 🙂

I drink about 500 – 750ml water a day. I think I’d struggle to do more. How come I appear to drink so little ?, do I need to increase this and if so, why ?.

weight wise I do seem to have plateaued

Also, I may not be going for it hard enough on the day off.
from memory, last Saturday. For breakfast I some lentils and bacon, later I did a snicker bar, for lunch I had a cheese sandwich, with chilli for evening meal. Followed with some beer and wine.

I don’t normally eat late at night and I have also heard that doing so may not be good for one.
But that could be a myth, On this subject (weight loss, diet), there are a fair few flying around, I’ve found.

    🙂

that’s not really a day off solo – you need a proper go at food. lots of it too, and include bad stuff.

We went fairly hard on cheat day last week. As said whole bowl of pasta, lots of squash instead of water, couple of pints of milkshake, 2 slices toast and jam for brekkie, chocolate bars (1 each), shared an easter egg,

I’m going shopping tomorrow to buy loads of fruit, bread, choccie, beer, having a whole tray of pasta bake (home made around 45x30x8cm) for dinner on our cheat day. Any target foods for cheat day? As you’ve said it’s important and so I want to maximise on the things which will have a big effect on us.

We eat late at night too (8 to 8:30) but I don’t believe in the timing changing the process.

    500ml water a day??? 1 Pint? I neck a pint when I wake up!

Busy decorating the flat in prep for sale, but will try harder. Thanks.

How am I doing on the water front ?, if some people ^^^^^ are drinking 8 pints of water a day. This just makes me wonder. I don’t drink tea or coffee anyway, literally one 500ml bottle at work with me during the day, and I don’t always finish that. Then just a glass of water or wine(2 glasses, hic !) with evening meal.

not nearly enough water solo. I’d suggest 3-4 pints a day. 1/2 pint on waking.

Squash? Pah. You need fizzy drinks by the bucket 🙂

As for water – I’ve found I really want to drink loads on this diet. After a load of beans it really helps wash them down 🙂

On my cheat days I’ve been mostly drinking coke and eating cakes and ice cream. I’ve not really cared about starches though, perhaps I ought to have chips or something..mmm..chips….

Half way through Week 2, week 1’s loss was 2kg, down to 84kg, pretty pleased with that. Finding it hard not to eat porridge in the morning. I love pulses, meat and veg so the diet is no hardship. Other than porridge I find bread hardest to not want, had a lovely veg chilli last night would have gone lovely with some crusty white bread, mmmmm. Crusty white bread, looking forward to Sunday.

Naughty Solo! Try taking a sip between each mouthful whilst eating, and throughout the day, just small sips every now and then. You’ll soon find your consumption going up, most guidelines state 2l or 4 pints or 8 glasses a day, as iDave says above.

Just keep necking drinks Solo. Take some squash to work with you if you’re not really a fan of water. Force yourself to down a glass every couple of hours.

Yeah, seems I’ve wandered off the path, some how, I’ll have to try to make more time to drink.

Ref the bread thing, Motivforv’s gram flour bread is good and will go well with a Chilli.
That gram flour bread is one of thebest things I’ve discovered through these discussions.
    Thanks Motivforv 😉

Thanks TSY but squash is out cept for the “Mad day” once a week.
Thanks too for the offer of assistance, will it require that I wear speedos to work ?.
    😀

EDIT: Water is great, I’ve been on the water for ages. I prefer Evian now. It amazed me when not too long after I started drinking only water during the days, that I could taste the difference between the brands.
Its easy now to taste the difference between Evian and Volvic, for example.
Yet when I started, it all tasted the same.
    Mad, innit.
