Charlie Hobbs. Charlie the Bikemonger. Charlie the Merchmonger. Charlie the Bum Butterer. However you know him, you’ll know he’s got stories. Before he set off for the queue at the post office, a blue rinse, and a Honda Jazz, we sat down for a Desert Island Discs session. It’s been an action packed life so far, so there are plenty of anecdotes, tales of the unexpected, and random asides.
I came to Singletrack having decided there must be more to life than meetings. I like all bikes, but especially unusual ones.
More than bikes, I like what bikes do. I think that they link people and places; that cycling creates a connection between us and our environment; bikes create communities; deliver freedom; bring joy; and improve fitness. They're environmentally friendly and create friendly environments.
I try to write about all these things in the hope that others might discover the joy of bikes too.
Hannah asked if anyone remembers Langdale bike hire
I remember renting mountain bikes from Chapel Style Langdale in 1985 / 1986 when a was a member of City University Mountaineering Club and we got the cycling club to fund a join trip to the Lake district. We went riding around the quarries. Did not ride a mountain bike again for about 5 years.
