I use a Helix USB straight into Logic Pro, but kind of like the idea of not using a DAW at all if you know what I mean.

I am probably just being lazy 🙂

Being honest as soon as you step away from the most basic Portastudio I feel you are in ipad and Garageband land. Just with a smaller display.
Time for a return to cassettes!

On a similar note, are any of you recording wizards going to put together another STW jam track any time soon? I feel like I might actually be good enough to contribute this year…

Timely post @benman. I put the most recent one together. I’m happy to do that again. Would someone else like to provide a backing? I don’t mind doing that, but might be nice to broaden it out.

I suppose we could even invite “the other lot” to contribute? 😉(bassists of singletrack). I’m one of “them” too, so tongue in cheek post! 🤣

If it’s got blastbeats I’m in.

I’d be tempted to have a go too. Might do a saxophone take as well if you want variety ?

I only have experience with the Tascam Porta 02 etc cassette-based recorders. I hear they’re still very in vogue 🙂

Denmark St might not be what it once was – last time I was there, the giant Crossrail station was being built and the whole street looked like it might be evicted any moment to build luxury flats on…

I am up for another jam really enjoyed the last one 🙂 It was so interesting to see what people had done.

I am too crap to do the backing track it would be pretty simplistic and not as funky as AdamT 🙂

will be getting a new fender mustang lt25 delivered today so looking forward to that.

i did have a boss katana 50w mk ii combo but i didn’t gel with it tbh so sold it a few weeks ago.

i had an older mustang amp a few years ago that i liked so hopefully this will be the same (i only play at home).

the ocean machine pedal that i bought is great i have to say,but it will take me some time to begin to understand it lol (my boss gt-1 that i’ve had for over a year i still don’t know how to program it).

Yeah, I was thinking about this the other day – let’s get it done. I’m not sure I could record a passable backing track though so hopefully someone else can volunteer??

Even if anyone had an interesting chord sequence they could share that would work. I could do a rough take of it and post it out.

I’m currently finishing rebuilding the studio at work, so I should then be recording a load of bass and drums works in progress if anyone wants some stuff to guitar over (warning, some of it’s quite weird!) Or I’ve got quite a lot of interesting chord sequences but they’re all written on bass, so different voicings to guitar.

I’ve recently been fascinated by ‘At the River’ (“If you’re fond of sand dunes…”) by Groove Armada which is, as far as I can tell, Ab –> Ebm –> Db –> Eaug. Well, that matches the recording but I play A –> Em –> D –> Faug.

It’s a nice little chord progression with plenty of non-diatonic options. Can probably stick to Amaj pentatonic over it, though, to keep things simple.

Here’s a harmonic puzzle which I’m trying to solve at the moment. I’ve written a thing where the verses and choruses are in A# Dorian. (The intro is a suspended feeling thing just using F octaves and E with the open note critical because of how the riff works).

I’ve just had an idea about making the outro like the verse but with a ton of distortion and some room for soloing – the verse riff is a syncopated root note thing with some little extra twiddles. If I can find a way to modulate into E then I can used the open E and go a lot more wild on the widdling than if I stay in A# and have to keep leaping back to the 6th fret. (This is all on bass guitar). Unfortunately I’m at my in-laws and there are no instruments in sight.

The puzzle is that A# Dorian and E Dorian are quite unrelated keys!

Backing track with a key change in it could be fun – go for that Lydian mode power solo!

Bb and E are a tritone apart so you could use that to your advantage, also it’s part of a diminished triad .

Try A# then C# then E which is bouncing up the diminished, or A# down to G down to E

Or try A#m then B7b13 then into the Eminor

Thought this may be of interest, i started playing two years ago and had my first practice yesterday with a drummer and bass player with a plan to gig next summer. It was really scrappy and i need to listen more but at times it didn’t sound too shabby, luckily the drummer is very good. Hoping to work on some original tunes as well, the only real problem is we drank enough beer to refloat the Titanic.
I now need a gigging guitar amp so happy days.

Having gone from eternal bedroom guitarist to playing with a band, there’s a lot of re-learning involved. It made me realise that my timing is terrible and I wasn’t really listening to everyone in the band. I now try to pay close attention to the drums and the song as a whole. It’s such a fun experience, though, and getting a tune dialled enough where you can sit back and enjoy it is a joy.

I am a terrible bedroom guitarist. Scrappy, uninterested etc

But I was borne for playing on stage. Am totally locked in with the other players instantly. Can get a set down in my head so I can play every single song in order in my head while lying on the couch with my eyes closed. And not just the fingering on the guitar, every pedal stomp, every stage move, the gaps between songs, every time you move in to the amp to catch the feedback point etc.

I think playing at home is ruined as soon as you play through a stack.

The fact I’m not in a band right now is painful.

Good of you to offer to put another STW track together Adam. I was hoping it might be easier to decide what to do with than harder. I quite like G C D in any order 😉 Chuck Berry made do with C for most of a song only adding a few bars of F and G in I’m Talking ’bout You. Perhaps that’s one for the bass thread. Me and my old acoustic again:

Ta, it’s a song that nobody wants to sing, listen to or play with me, even pre Covid. Elvis rockers still go down well but his soul period less so. Jail House Rock is popular if people are patient enough for me to down tune to E flat. I like the song, especially the live versions of Suspicious Minds Elvis did in the 70s, I’ve used the James Burton way of playing the riff here.

Right then. Are you ready for the next jam track backing?

Below is a backing track. It’s 90bpm. The cowbells count down the last bar before the start of the jam section. The Horn stab is on the first beat. You can just about play an E pentatonic over it, but options to do something a bit more.

I genuinely whacked the parts in on the first take so expect to replace probably all of it. All submissions welcome. Guitar, Bass (looking at you @chiefgrooveguru), Keyboard, Drums and I think it would be epic to get some of the “Music producers of Singletrack” to potentially remix or reimagine it too. (looking at you @ajantom)

There are some slightly obscure chords in here. I’ll whack them into this thread a bit later (when I’ve worked them out)

Please, if you’re a bit scared just have a go…..no judgement here. I can even do a private mix/render if you like?

Next steps: Tell me if you’re in. I’ll set a bit of a deadline and add submissions as they come in. Once the deadline passes, I’ll produce the full mix. Any questions, then just ask.

    A couple of minutes with a bass gets me E C# C A, E C# C A, E C# C A, C D, C D.

    AdamT

They’re mostly the roots but also some fancy things in there. Eg the first 4 chords are E7(#9)(aka Hendrix), C#7(#9), CMaj9, B7(#9). Last two chords of the whole thing I intended to be Am7 and a variation in Bm7, but that doesn’t really matter.

    Edukator

Ta, I typed it wrong anyhow, I meant E C# C B for the initial bars. I was only trying to find the root notes. Most of what I’ve played over it so far sounds gloriously shit. Tried singing some nonsence lyrics but couldn’t come up with a melody either. The nearest were some Michael Jones licks, I might persue that.

Edit, my ears must be bust I get C D for the last bars.

    AdamT

Am is the relative minor of Cmaj so it’s basically the same chord/scale.

Should, yes. I find a C creeping in as well.
