Scotland picked a side with damage limitation in mind. Heaviest team they could have picked, with the exception of Ford.I get what Cotter is doing, he is keeping an eye on the Samoa game, and if you had offered me the way Scotland have played and two bonus points,I would have bitten your hand off…But…I would love to have seen them go for it against SA.

Probably sheer optimism, but I think Scotland can cause an upset, good confidence, and despite the papers, it doesn’t seem Scotland have really picked a ‘b-team.’ Going to be a good afternoon of rugby!

Really quite nervous – my head says England are going out of the World Cup but my heart wants to believe we can do it…

If we win we’re guaranteed to go through aren’t we, assuming a bonus point win against Uruguay?

If we win we’re guaranteed to go through aren’t we

Pretty much from what I can make out.

    However…

Were it to be a try fest, and Australia scored four, losing by less than seven points, they’d both be on 11 points. If England didn’t manage a bonus point victory against Uruguay, and Australia did against Wales, that would put Australia through. If they both got BP wins, England would go through on the result between them. 😀

So, yeah, pretty much, win this one, and England are through.

Which is the result I’m hoping for, as it would make the Australia – Wales game (thankfully, not in the StagNHennium) mahoosive.

They could have – a win over SA and they’d be through, rendering the Samoa game irrelevant.

I can see what Cotter’s doing and it doesn’t stink like the Hadden 2nd XV against the ABs at a packed Murrayfield in the 2007 RWC did.

Yup what @dd says, if England win tonight (big if now as the pressure is really on) the Wales v Australia match becomes a knock out as England will get the bonus point win over Uruguay.

Carter is worth his spot in the AB side but he’s not the player he was. He’ll still be sensational in Top 14 as its a different style of game than played in NZ. Dare I say it JW was outstanding for Toulon and made pretty much all the othe 10’s in Europe look quite ordinary (Giteau was closest to him) but that was at least due to resting during the international breaks and a different level of intensity even in matches like Heineken cup.

Jeez. The amount of pressure on those players, interpreted via the constant FB posts, news etc must be enormous.

England are either going to steamroll Aus or lose as quivering wrecks as a result of it.

Nah, scrape by and brush the problems under the rug is more likely

Surely the players can’t trust the coaching staff, lancaster seems pretty clueless.England will lose.

You need to go with toys19’s predictions, I said we would lose to Wales, I was correct, and we are going to get properly rinsed by the Wallabies tonight. I am so sure that I am prepared to snog a_a if we win. (for him thats a win win)

    Its not a win

Well you don’t have to claim your prize if you don’t want to.

I’m kind of a combination of both..

I think england need a bp win to be certain? Too many permutations otherwise.

Wales need Aus to win or draw or England to win by lots. But mostly we Aus to win.

Pressure?? You are doing what you want to do, in the World Cup and in great stadia. What’s not to like? This is what pro sport is all about. If that is not welcome, then the guys are in the wrong job. They should be relsishing the opportunity.

Plus cosseted away at Pennyhill Path is hardly a hardship – although the ice wall next to the steam rooms is quite an experience!

Cmon England, do the business and then let the others get sweaty next week. Either way going to be a fun evening! Food and drink ready……

Japan are so technically brilliant at the breakdown its incredible.

Its an amazing game, Japan are an excellent advert for the sport of Rugby, and probably the true hearts & minds winners of the RWC.

England could be coached by Eddie Jones and Borthwick!

Well Scotland South Africa just became very interesting for the Japanese perhaps?

I can’t calculate who can and can’t go through now in that group.

Are SA out if they don’t win today?

    (I’m assuming Japan win now)

    That would be nice.
But the Japanese in my experience with work are very technically precise, this appears to be translated on the pitch as simple rugby done brilliantly.
This is a brilliant match, Japan are a great surprise and a treat for the whole RWC.

Not really,Japan need us to leak 70 points in the next two games.I suspect Japan have just put us through,we will lose to SA,but will beat that Samoa team.

Think that try was a bit generous -was is not double movement?

    Double? And the rest!

Presumably it wasn’t grounded before being grounded over the line (caveat – I only saw a replay out the corner of my eye)

It was always going to be given but I’d feel hard done by if Scottish.

Bit of Habanna play acting worth a penalty yet again too 🙄

Normally think Nigel Owens is a good ref, but think he is missing a few infringements from s.a 😕

It does look that way. Lots of S. Africans off their feet at the breakdown and lots of high hits/ no arms largely going unpuished

When you watch how physical the sarfricans are it makes the Japan result even more amazing.

I know it’s because we are on the receiving end of excellent maul play by SA but how are you meant to defend this-from a viewing point of view it is dull & trying to explain the rules of it to people gives me a headache

    IdleJon

SA are getting some generous decisions from the officials but, by God, Scotland are useless. Do they think they can win by running one-up at SA?

Nige seems v tolerant of tackles around the neck?
