My good friend and ex-colleague went to school with and is very close to Doug and Mike Catt, there is another side of the Chippy story. As STWers know I think Cipriani is a waster of his talent with poor discipline so I’m always going to come down on the side that he should never have been in the squad so who cares if he gets the sharp end of a coaches temper when he’s not cutting it in training. I’m no international sportsman but have been coached by people at that level and its not all smiles and “well done lads”

@Kryton I agree with your assessment I just feel Mike has something good to add to the setup and his area was one where we’ve seen a big improvement over the past few seasons (admittedly from a low base !)

England coaching setup has become a bit of a poisoned chalice really, better for folk to stay in club rugby longer IMHO.

Catt’s playing career is an irrelvance when evaluating him as a coach, afterall the last three World Cup winning coaches don’t have an international cap between them.

Slade is a very good player, nearest you have had to a centre with an attacking brain in years.

Oooh. Looks like it’s getting juicy.
    BBC;

Steve Borthwick named England forwards coach by Eddie Jones

    Bristol rugby;

Bristol Rugby want to make it clear that we have not agreed that Steve Borthwick can leave our employment.

Steve Borthwick is subject to a recently signed long term employment contract. Bristol Rugby did not give the RFU permission to speak with Steve Borthwick.

Bristol Rugby will take all reasonable actions as necessary to protect the Club’s position and, therefore, will not be making any further statement at this stage.

Indeed @wrecker, a right dogs breakfast particularly coming after the RWC debacle. You’d have thought they’d make sure they got the details right. I for one hope Bristol stand their ground and keep him under contract till the end of the season.

It’s not even as if it’s another club who have broken the rules; it’s the ****ing RFU FFS!
I hope Mr Lansdowns legal team tears them a new arsehole.
Fair enough, Borthwick wants to go and they want him, but do it properly at least?
    Pricks.

IMHO its just another demonstration of why the structure in England is wrong. In NZ/Aus/SA country comes first. Bristol should let him go with pride, and accept the compensation package – like the Stormers did with Jones.

    Why should they?
They signed a coach in good faith. The least the RFU should do is follow their own rules. Bristol have been on the receiving end of a very unfair play off system for a long time, and had just signed a coach who looked like could help with promotion. I don’t blame the club for saying **** ’em.

Because country comes first. The best chance of commercial success for any english club is a successful england team.

Plenty of english clubs are doing very nicely, despite the national team being pretty bloody poor for a good few years. Poaching staff is poaching staff no matter where it comes from. If the RFU want the clubs to behave they need to set an example, not trample over it’s members.

So England should only employ crap coaches that aren’t in a job?

I don’t see Saracens making a hoohah over Gustard. Sort it out like adults. The Bristol owner comes over as a man used to getting his own way and throwing his toys out of the pram.

Bristols only word has been the press release so the bristol owners tone has not been established. Borthwick has been employed for a very short time at the start of a fairly long contract by a club desperate for promotion. It is a very different situation to saracens, as an AP club they will have no problems recruiting. A champ club has no such luxuries, no matter what the pay packet.
The RFU need to wind their necks in and treat clubs fairly. If they don’t it will go legal and breach of contract doesn’t get any more cut and dried than this appears to be.

That may be, but you can’t stop someone leaving. Borthwick has announced he’s off, so blocking the move isn’t going to benefit Bristol in any way.

Bristol can’t block the move. They can sue though, and given the time spent recruiting, equipping, training etc why shouldn’t they?

It’s been tough reading about Lomu’s financial situation. I do womder whether he took the RWC work knowing it was a health risk but felt he had no choice. I’ve a mate with a kidney issue and he won’t fly, gave up his rwc tickets on doctors advice as the long haul flight was regarded as a risk

Dylan **** Hartley set to be New England captain.

Well the captain needs to be a definite first choice and be clearly the best player in his position – Hartley ticks both boxes. He’s also the hooker other teams least like playing against (despite the yellow cards).

He is also a kn*b and not actually English but this is international sport so, if we want to win, I can’t see any better alternatives.

    This.

Plus he has some grit & experience as a player and captain also.

Also published is a vice-captaincy setup proposed, so Dylan will know its only his to keep if he behaves himself, as there’s obviously a succession plan in place.

Its no good being first choice if you can’t remain on the field.

I don’t think Robshaw in his 40 odd caps as Captain ever got subbed. Fat lot of good that did England 😆

True, although he’s only had 3 yellows in 66 international appearances.

Whereas James Haskell has had 4 in 62 caps and nobody goes on about that – probably because they’re going on about how sh*te he is instead….

Interestingly (well for me anyway) the record holder is Marco Bortolami with seven yellows.

The list of players on six includes usual suspects like Jamie Cudmore, Schalk Burger, a couple of Georgian Back-Rowers and Bryan Habana!

What happened to the picture of Dave Denton’s injury that I posted up?

Also, see they’re trialling 6 point tries, 2 point penalties and drop goals, 5 seconds for a maul to move of it’s over and front rows coming into contact on crouch instead of engage from next season.

Good on him. I had similar in Pret earlier today “could you stop swearing in front of my son please” followed by a staring competition. I love staring comps.

Matt Morgan leaving Bristol at end of season, most likely to Blues. That fat Ulster 8 is going to waddle anout and get yellow cards for Cardiff next season too

Never really understood people getting annoyed or embarrassed about swearing. Swearing is noise coming out of your mouth. It is used for emphasis or because you can’t think of a good enough non-swear word. It does no harm to anyone and yet it’s seen as more serious than actual violence. Swearing before the watershed is seen as a big no-no and yet fighting and hurtful speech is seen as fine.

You never hear commentators apologising for players fighting on the field.

Well in the case I wrote about above it was the fact the guy was calling the lady in the cafe a **** phillipino **** that got my back up.

Dear God old chap. I suppose having 2 players in most positions will help but even then two hookers at loosehead is novel to say the least!
