Singletrack Magazine Issue 147 Is Out Today! How will you read yours?

by 42

If you receive a printed copy of the magazine each issue, it’s now in the post – we can’t be sure exactly when it will land with you, but if you’re in the UK and you’ve still not got it by 16th February please email us. If you’re outside the UK, it might take up to a month to make its way to you, across the sea and overland, so hopefully it’ll be with you by 3rd March.

If you want to read the magazine online, or you join us today, you have other options too:

  • You can download a pdf of the magazine here. This is an exact copy of the printed magazine.
  • You can download an ePub version of the magazine. This is a more basic version of the magazine, with fewer pictures, that you can read in a variety of electronic book programmes, such as iBooks, or on an iPad.
  • You can download a Kindle version, for your Kindle. Like the ePub version, this is optimised for Kindles, so has all the words, but far fewer pictures.
  • Read the articles online. (Behind the Paywall) We’ll be publishing them over the next week or so, so look out for them popping up on the homepage, or check back here to see what’s new each day.

If you were already a member by 25th January 2023, you can also download the interactive app version of the mag from Pocketmags, which has all the same content as the web page versions, but with all the swipe and tap interactivity you get with an iPad – which is what you need to read this version. We get charged for every download in this format, so you only get access to the versions created while you had an active membership – so if you want a back issue from before you joined us, try one of the other formats above.

Both the Pocketmags and online versions of our articles contain some extra features, like more images, plus some videos – but it doesn’t smell like our printed magazine, and it’s riskier to read it in the bath. If you want a printed copy of any of our magazines – maybe you usually get a digital version but a paper one would be good for a holiday – then head to our shop.

How – or where – will you read yours?

We’d really love to know what you think of the redesigned magazine. Is it easy to read? Is there anything you don’t like? Anything you loved? Head to the comments and let us know, or complete this survey.

What’s Inside?

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is Singletrack-Cover-147-1168x752.jpg

This crisp Lake District cover shows the reward for persistence and getting on up and out there. An unpromising start to the day gave way to sunshine and the perfect inversion. Nils Amelinckx bags his first Singletrack World cover. This shot is also available as a quality A4 and A3 print in the Singletrack merch store. What’s more, a share of the profits goes to the Rider Resilience organisation that help people through the hardest of times.

UK Adventure: Reyt Good Time

Amanda heads off on an overnight group ride that leaves the pressure at behind. Good vibes, with the Reyt Good crew.

Classic Ride: Jura

Markus Stitz sets you up for a solid adventure, in this route guide around Jura that’s sure to have you making plans for summer.

Column: Vinegar and Brown Paper

A nasty crash has Chad Bean looking at his local trails from a new perspective.

International Adventure: Kids In The Back(country)

Adventures with kids might just show you what you’ve been missing out. Tony Hutcheson makes the case for taking your kids along for the ride.

Kit Essentials: Real World Forks

140mm forks appear to be something of the forgotten forks out there. All the hype and attention goes to Enduro and XC race forks. Zeb this, 38 that, SID the other. The middle ground often gets overlooked. But for those of us looking for a new fork for their shorter travel full suspension trail bike or their hardtail, 140mm is where it’s at.

Join Benji as he conducts his real world test, for real world riders.

Column / What New Standards Have Been Worth It?

Maybe don’t go to the pub with Benji if you’re a bike industry engineer…

MTB Culture: The Aberdeen Scene

What does it take to create a thriving scene in a location apparently quite a long way away? Antony de Heveningham heads to Aberdeenshire to find out.

Bike Test: Why £2k?

Can any of these bikes from Boardman, Jamis and Vitus wow us with their value for money? Benji and Rhys take to the trails in search of good value fun.

Column / I♥MY

Amanda shows us the kit that’s been keeping her going this winter.

International Adventure: New Kids Sur Le Bloc

Last year, Chipps chucked (most of) it all in moved to a small village in the French mountains. But how do you say ‘Show me to the good trails!’ in French?

I came to Singletrack having decided there must be more to life than meetings. I like all bikes, but especially unusual ones. More than bikes, I like what bikes do. I think that they link people and places; that cycling creates a connection between us and our environment; bikes create communities; deliver freedom; bring joy; and improve fitness. They're environmentally friendly and create friendly environments. I try to write about all these things in the hope that others might discover the joy of bikes too.

Postal service must be good here. 11.05am Monday 6th February and my copy has just plopped through the door.
Thank you to all who have contributed.

Yep, was surprised to see my copy arrive today, doesn’t seem that long since the last copy!

Had a quick skim through mine. The article from Chad Bean rings true. My crash wasn’t as bad as his (only a busted collar bone) but I’m a proper mincer on the bit of trail I crashed on now.

Long time listener first time caller here! I normally just read the mag when it drops through the door – was kinda unaware I could download it etc (great surprise). However I can’t find Issue 147 to download in my download section, am I missing a trick?!

Benji’s column on page 71…. “27.5in is not dead. But it should never have been born”…. brilliant.

Cheers @jeffl It was me wot penned that one. I can sympathise with your collarbone. T’was a dislocated shoulder and broken collarbone that ended my unpromising amateur rugby career. I focus on safer recreations now.. ahem..

Not on the first screen you hit (yet, probably get there one day) but it is in the list once you follow the ‘Member Downloads’ link.

Scroll all the way down, it would be far too obvious to put the latest mag at the top of the list

As a bedtime story apparently. After helping me open it and carrying it round the house in lieu of a teddy my Daughter (20 months) has decided it’s her new bedtime book. If I read it on my own she’ll be furious!

I have a hunch what’s going on but will need people who don’t work at night to tickle it tomorrow. Sorry folks! (Or can I say it’s a deliberate part of the site update, and it’s a digital post simulator, bringing the real world postal experience to the digital format? Downloads will land at inexplicable intervals, occasionally with some corruption to the outer edges. Rainy day deliveries are proving a technical challenge, but we’re working on a deal with other publishers so you can occasionally get magazines intended for other people).

I think this is one of the best issues for ages. I’ve been a subscriber since it was all fields and that.

This issue, for whatever reason feels a bit like some of the longer stories from back then, with lovely writing about the riding and adventures rather than bits of kit/ company stuff.

I especially liked the bike packing, the Jura stuff and Chipp’s getting settled in France.

Really enjoyed it and still have a few little bits to read

Amazing thank you for the quick delivery, for me as a new dad. Since getting the magazine around 4 days ago tonight has been the first time I’ve had time to browse past the cover!

I decided I’d try my hardest to feed and get baby to sleep, around 20 mins which is a record for me, which means STW is open and entertaining me!!

Just to say the “Feel the Love” piece at the end Hannah is first class and rings so very true.
    Worth the subscription alone. 👍🙌
