Yep dead Proud and I think he is going to go for the world record sometime .

    here is Louis mail

Just thought I would update you on the Coastal Classic last week. The light worked well although I am not sure that it is significantly better than the old one on the water. Water just seems to swallow up all the available light whatever you through at it. On land it is noticeably brighter and more light at your feet..
Thank you both for your support and getting the light so quickly.

Well the first 200km was a flyer and I completely exceed my expectations and that of people following me. The 13 Cabrinha Crossbow (2010) was perfect for the conditions and certainly had the wind range (8-30 knots) to cope with the weather on the day. Doing the Coastal Classic was never about trying to beat the yachts and was more about physical and mental challenge. The 262km covered between Auckland and the Bay of Islands is however a new NZ distance record, so am happy with that result. I was averaging 17 knots for my best hour and sustaining speeds in excess of 20 knots to do that. My time for the first 200km to Cape Brett was 7 hours which is also well under world record (333km) pace for 12 hours.

With an outgoing tide and dying wind it was always going to be difficult to get into Russell on a kite. The plan was to take a wide berth at Cape Brett as the kite won't fly in less than 8 knots. The support boat was running low on petrol once we got to Cape Brett so a call was made for the boat (8.5m Protector) to head back into Russell and fuel up. That left me on my own for a bit but with Spot, VHF, flares and a cell phone, felt pretty comfortable on my own. I am really appreciative to the Coastguard for shadowing me until the support boat came back.

In the end I pulled the pin 8nm from the finish at 10:30pm after the wind died around 10:15. I did consider swimming the last bit but was too far out to do this realistically. The body was still willing even after 13 hours and recovered well afterwards. The only ill effect was a sore wrist , which I got from sitting in front of a computer typing. Moral of the story work is dangerous…(smile).

another day without my delivery of chargers !! How come it can take less than 3 days to arrive in the country and then an extra 4+ to be farted around this country, no wonder this country is in such a state.

As soon as I get them they will be on a 24hr to troutie.

First ride out with mine tonight. 4 of us out: 2 of the new lights, 1 Troutelight mk1 and 1 Hope 4 LED.

I've been spoiled with my last light (a mk1) so not a complete revelation but really happy with it. a few thoughts:

Comparing the mk1 and mk2 housings side by side shows a real progression in the quality of the machining and the thought gone into the new housings.

Mount super stable and easy to use, a real step forward over single bolt mounts.

Liked the 'bottom window': I was concerned that there would be glare back from stem & cables etc but not distracting at all and gave some useful light down low for slow techy stuff.

Beam pattern was really even, nice bright centre area than a good spread of light over a wider area, no discernible hotspots.

Did a quick comparison with the mk1 (6 xpe r2) and the new light was significantly brighter, but very similar throw and beam pattern. mk1 had (I think) 4 narrow optics & 2 wide ellipticals and mk2 5 narrow optics and 1 medium (I had a few spare optics from my previous build which I used). So xpgs do seem a bit more floody, but not massively so.

I do seem to like a narrower beam than most, and I'd be interested in trying some narrower xpg specific optics (if they come out) to give a bit more throw. But to be honest on todays fairly techy ride I never wished for more throw (or more light for once).

BTW our mate with the Hope4 opted out of the comparison and was asking a fair few questions about the Troutelights!

    many thanks Chris.

PS: meant to take the camera for some pics but forgot

The proto should be with you by now Trout?

Is mine likely to be waiting for me when i get back tuesday, do you know?

    *slightly blind stoner*

All these pics dont get over just how small it is. And the driver is tiny! Im very chuffed with my soldering skills – worked first time and all joints seem OK…

Epoxy took two goes, but it does go off eventually.
Not done any silicon as all mine has gone off in the tubes, so will waterproof it another time. Anyway, birds dont fly in the rain, so I see no reason why I should ride in the rain 🙂

Hopefully have some beam pics tonight in comparison with Ayup intermediate single head set, an Airbike SL1 P7, and maybe a 20W lumi halogen too.

I wish i had a spare £250 for one of these……just have to slum it with a DX until i can rob a bank. 😉

Lol @ El Presidente! The DX is a great little light, and it'll keep you riding until the cash is there for a Troutelight. Don't forget, Xmas is coming: ask for money towards one of Trout's little gems. 😀

I got mine on Tuesday as promised, and yeah it is tiny – much smaller than I thought. The quality is spot on and the switch is really positive. Once charged it lit up my garage a treat!
Nightride last night and it really is amazing. No hotspots, VERY bright and it makes a helmet lamp redundant unless you are riding switchbacks. I had an Exposure Enduro Maxx for comparison and with the Trout on full, the Maxx adds nothing, you can't tell if it is on. If I'm being ultra critical, I still can't find anything to dislike about it!
I'd love to see a magazine comparison test, because I can't believe there is anything better out there at any money.

Please email me If you would like me to post you some lengths up to you i can do that no problem.

Just back from my first proper night ride with then and they were fantastic.

I rode with my spot Ay Ups on my helmet and for most of the ride I had the trouts on low, but when it came to the singletrack or anything technical the high beam was much beter than I expected, the downlighter window if a fantastic addition as well.

There were 18 riders out some with DX some with the big Hopes and not once when on full power did I ever ride in a shadow of someone behinds lights.

I think I pissed of a couple of riders in front of me with the trouties on full power they couldn't see the trail in front of them.

10/10 Chris, nice work and a great package.

Thanks smudge, I was wondering what gauge to get for the internal wiring, and I thought I'd have to guess it. Trout, are you going to stick up some up to date pics of the build sequence for us numpties to follow?
