Please do all your spoilers in here so that I can avoid them.
Thanks.
I've only seen the original one but apparently in one of them, Darth Vader turns out to be Luke's dad. 😯
Chewbacca is frozen in yoghurt.
My friend's sister used to go out with real life Darth Vader's son.
The Death Star isn't a star 😯
Turns out that 'Rosebud' ia the name of the sleigh

I'll be watching it at 1 minute past midnight...!
Me too!
Got ESB and ROTJ planned for the deadzone between kids going to bed and needing to drive to the cinema.
Yesterday I was excited, now I'm just nervous.
Just sneaked a look at the reviews on't beeb - looks favourable. Hurrah.
yeah, don't read the reviews if you want to keep it all a surprise, altho the two I read were actually scant on details or answers to the big questions but they did give some of the general themes away.
Turns out that it wasn't actually a moon - it was a space station!
I reckon it's a trap

My friend's sister used to go out with real life Darth Vader's son.
My friend is the real life Darth Vader's niece.

Had they got as far as getting engaged I guess he would have pro-Prowse'd IGMC
Look under the table Greedo!
happy to report that it's BRILLIANT.
Yup - absolutely fantastic. I'm already excited for the next one!
Yup, saw it last night and it is very, very good. Want to see it again already, and it sets up the next film perfectly.
For those that have seen it, what did you pick out of 2d/3d/imax? I'm wondering whether 3d adds anything to the film.
Saw it in 2D last night.
Giggled like a school girl and cried like the fanboy I know am.
Loved it, kinda wish I'd booked to see it again today now.
And not eaten so much popcorn 😳
Have you seen the Star Wars in the lake District film yet?
On local paper website....
Some of it was filmed at Puzzlewood in FoD, but I'm sure everyone already new that 😉
Is this the new Disney kids' film that everyone's been on about? I think my two are a bit old for it.
And the rebel base was filmed at the bunkers on Greenham common, lots of shots of that, just with mountains added in the background...
AWESOME - a few things felt like a "copy" but lots of other stuff made up for it, felt they played it safe - acting was great though, and the effects top notch, john williams score amazing, welled up at "certain parts" but overall probably 2nd to Empire.
3D was ok, didnt detract too much and was fine.
6 people in my showing, 2 staff !

The Death Star isn't a star
And that small moon? Well, it isn't actually a moon... 😆
So whats the utter violence verdict - would I be a bad dad if I took my 6yo to see it?
Edit - IMAX 3D or no?
Off to watch it this afternoon. I can't wait!!!!
Watched it last night at 12:01am!! Slightly tires today, but it was well worth it! Really great film, and am seeing it again on Sunday.
Some great merchandise from the original release:
more here (one potentially slightly NSFW):

TBH I thought a few bits were quite brutal for a Star Wars film (without too many spoilers, the flame thrower scene in the village was like something from a ww2 movie)
Defo not taking my 5 year old to see it, Abrams has managed to cater for the fanboys as well as the slightly younger market by making a proper Star Wars film (although nothing like the kiddie shitfest that was episode 1). Yes some (most) of the plot lines are rehashed, but if it works...
Big thumbs up from me.
Big thumbs up here too... It was a proper starwars film. Well shot, a bit industrial and not the polished episode 1. Loved it, going again soon....
I *loved* the sets / style / design side of it. From the burnt out carcasses of ships on Jakku (AT-AT!) to the clean, polished, sterile 1st order environments. Again, by doing less he managed to give us so much more than the prequels.
T'was impressive. Most impressive.
Just back , loved it from beginning to end , the only doubt i had was about half way through i thought this is just the same story as the first one and i do wonder if the new trilogy is just going to basically be the old one with new faces . Chewie was f***ing awesome and i thought finn and rye were excellent , captain phasma seemed a bit easy to get rid off . Everything the prequels weren't and cant wait for the next one now

Well what do you want?
I've only read one online synopsis (damn!) and basically, Luke is missing, bad people are doing bad things, so a group of goodies will probably have to do something about it.
Oh, and I supsect there's going to be a few more of these films, because this flippin franchise just simply refuses to die, die, DIE!
😆
we could put spoilers here i guess - its what its here for
i think they are setting up another big spoiler for the next film, Rye's history - i kind of think i have it already to be honest, given the reveals in this film about characters....
Brilliant! Never a moment where you felt it was dragging.
Spoiler. Darth Vader is Luke's father.

Here you go 😈
Looking forward to this on Christmas Eve with my son, even he seems quite keen !!
Quite enjoyed it considering I'm not a huge fan of the films.
A couple of things bugged me; one was Finn who (at least initially) seemed to be another one of those typecast black/goofy/bungling characters you often find in films. Warmed to him towards the end.
Enjoyed Han Solo; although his son wasn't much of a looker considering who his parents were 😉
Also enjoyed the fact the new "badass Jedi" is now a female
Who would have thought that after ROTJ Luke would end up better looking than Leia? Luke looks like Obi Wan. Leia looks like she'd crack in direct sunlight.
I'm sure it won't take long for piss takes of the new characters to come out: so, I thought when Kylo Ren took his helmet off, there was something of Steve Coogan (with longish hair) about him ... that made him seem a bit less menacing. That aside, Adam Driver's performance was excellent.
I'm judging from the above its not for a 6yo then?

Ah! No wonder Ford seems so happy. Now that he seems to have got what he's wanted for a while, allegedly...
So who do we reckon rye's parents are ? I had assumed she was kylo rens sister but it would appear not . Max von sydow didn't last long did he .
There are a couple of dark bits and a fan favourite dies but if your 6 year old has enjoyed all the other films i'm not sure there was much in it that was any darker than the other films
In the first 20 mins there is basically a space version of a nazi village round-up and genocide, and a storm trooper bleeds. So maybe not suitable for young 'uns..
My students have just spent a lesson writing spoilers on mini whiteboards and leaving them in the classroom for tomorrow's classes to find 🙂
I was disappointed after half hour but by the end I really enjoyed it, wasn't quite what i expected.

that's nice of them.
So who do we reckon rye's parents are ?
Luke Skywalker is her dad I thought. Given her amazing power, her flashbacks when she touched Luke's lightsabre (esp the bit with the little girl, the desert and the spaceship buggering off) and that yellow pixie thing with the goggles on implying the lightsabre belongs to Rey.
Awe shite,
It's
Awesumnez..
No, it really is.
Just remember to breathe.. 😆
Wouldn't the galaxy far far away be a much safer place if the skywalkers just kept it their pants and stopped having children?
i think rye's parents are han and leia - which will setup a great middle and end chapter if you think about it.
although all this is starting to smack of a little bit of copy-cat, something i did feel while watching it, and i hope it doesnt follow too much the "blood lines" that Empire and ROTJ certainly did.
Its a big old galaxy out there, and having everything centered for 7 and possible 8 films now about one family and the force seems a little narrow minded to me.
a bad thought suddenly came to me that perhaps Rye is luke and leia's offspring - they did have something going before they knew they were related - perhaps thats ok in a galaxy far far away :-/

*sigh* Ok, I'll bite; just what were you expecting, exactly?
Methinks Kylo Ren's struggle with the light side is making him muchos weak. I was curious why Snoke said Kylo Ren was to commence training again? Was it because striking down Han had unleashed more of his dark side??
Also the humour was spot on I thought. I loved the Stormtroppers changing the direction after the temper tantrum 😆
Kryton my eldest is 6 and I'm not taking him, I think it's a bit too dark in places.
Just home. worth the 30 year wait! Rey is a Skywalker - the clue is in the music!
Took my two boys aged 5 and 7 tonight and they loved it. They laughed, cheered, cried... If your 6 year old is cool with the violence of the other films then he'll be fine. Watching it with them made it all the more special!
My 6yr old daughter loved it as did everyone else we went with. It wees allover the last trilogy and is fitting of the Starwars name not what I'd feared from a Disney production.
I don't get modern film age classification though. It's a 12a and the originals are U but no real difference in content. Yet some newer 15s are so much more violent or scary than the 18s of yesteryear.
Star Trek wins hands down ...
😆
Just seen a 2d showing here at 8:30am, about 5 of us in the cinema, all middle class males.
Enjoyed it, not up there with 1 or 2 but it seems to run along at a nice pace, the action sequences are good and there are a number of reference points/characters in the film where I got a little lump in the throat.
Went for 3D IMAX - didn't make great use of the 3D, only really worked on a couple of scenes. Would recommend 2D.
I went with some hardened fanboys (I know very little about the originals) and we all enjoyed it, so I reckon a job well done.
on reflection, JJ really did brush over the whole 30 years in between ROTJ and now - a few sentences in the opening CRAWL and then Starkiller kills off the entire new Republic/Senate & its army (a throw away line by someone said "...and how do we attack the base without the republic forces") and suddenly its back to a few resistance fighters lead be Leia and a gang of young guns against the Evil empire - back to Ep 4 we are!
So the new baddie, Snoke - where did he come from - anyone any thoughts?
That opening crawl was awesome in 3d. Did look a bit wonky though.
Was hoping to see more of Iko Uwais and Yayan Ruhian... I don't think we saw them die so hopefully they'll pop up in one of the sequels for a brutal fight scene or two .
The've left alot for the sequels to answer. I was thinking more about the parentage of Rey. And I am also very suspicious of Poe - has he been turned, he was missing for a good while after crashing the TIE fighter. I'm also not sure who the character played by Max Von Sydow was and if he was significant (obviously won't be going forward). It's going to need a couple more viewings.
I loved it, lots of it was dirty sci fi, like the first films, full of realistic scenes and not too much noticeable cgi.
The story echoed much of the original first film but that didn't detract from it being fab. Carrie Fisher was a little like a plank of wood and Ford did his usual 'Indiana jones' but that's cool. BB8 was a bit like scrappy Doo. But these negatives are totally forgiveable as the film was excellent and I'm just being hyper critical.
Rey is clearly Lukes daughter somehow? So Lukes daughters somehow and so Hans son fought Lukes daughter. Hans son will now get darker and meaner.
I am disapoint.
No cool new spaceships, musical score was lacking, I've seen better 3d, sound generally a bit meh. Harrison Ford carried the whole film.
Mark Hamill did however put in his best performance yet (seriously)
Not sure about the girl and the black man.
I guess I have high expectations. I'll definitely be going back for another watch.
Needed cool new spaceships.
Needed cool new spaceships.
Methinks these will appear in episode 8 as they ramp up the search for the [s]rebellion[/s] resistance. The inner nerd was upset with no Y-wings / B-wings for the "bombing" run, as anyone whos played X-wing on the PC knows thems the ships you need...
Kylo Rens shuttle was pretty cool though.
Hopefully Captain Phasma returns as she was very underused.
i guess we must also remember, when we first (and i really mean FIRST) saw ANH it was like TFA is now, nothing much explained (i mean where did the Emperor come from, we didnt know or care - Vader was a baddie with a tiny wee line of "he was turned by the emperor" , Moff Tarkin, underused, etc etc) its only because we have had these extra movies and expanded universe do we understand almost all of what occurred and made the star wars universe we know it is now.
agree about Han Solo though, if you take him from the movie, it would have lost a great deal...so lets hope the next one can carry it off without the "smuggler/scoundrel" element 🙂
So the new baddie, Snoke - where did he come from - anyone any thoughts?
Hogwarts
I'm thinking did they film more scenes with Max von S which they will use in EP VIII? He and Ren clearly knew each other - is he a figure from Luke's failed academy and in EP VIII we'll get a more thorough explanation of what Ren did and how Rey ended up on Jakku (maybe with MvS holding the map to her dad as protection).
Agree Captain Phasma was underused and the pre-bombing run sequence felt a bit rushed ('We can't blow this thing up - ok let's blow it up!') and a bit *too* much of a riff on EP IV, but other that that... excellent.
Loved the interplay between Rey and Ren when he's trying to break her and she just gets stronger and stronger. If they slow EP VIII down and head off in the same style but with the (mostly) new cast and a new direction... it's going to be incredible.
