Oh, and I can see both sides of it. When I exclusively rode mountain bikes, I used to occasionally chase roadies down in Exocet mode for the giggles. Its just wrong and funny, but nothing more. Why do people get so triumphal about it?
And now I ride on the road as well, I’m vaguely bemused by mountain bikers who do that. Which doesn’t really make sense, except that I’m more aware of just how much faster road bikes are on the road. If I catch someone on a road bike while I’m on a mountain bike these days, I just assume that they’re not trying very hard or that they’re very, very tired, or that they’re simply not very fit.
And as far as roadies not talking much. It’s a taciturn sort of culture, lots of barely perceptible nods and twitched eyebrows rather than effusive hugs and waving. Is it really a big deal? And sometimes people are lost in their own thoughts or just very tired.
If you want a real laugh, go road riding some time with a quick-ish woman and watch the reactions of roadie blokes being overtaken by a cheery girl. Endlessly entertaining and a good session if you like people chasing you down.
