So ernie. Specifically what did johnson get right during the critical part of the pandemic?

Lockdown. Too late this meant it had to go on longer and many folk died

Test and trace. Spent billions on a useless set up ignoring existing expertise in local councils for ideological reasons

Furlough support. Massivly skewed towards the well off. So poorly done it was an open invitation to fraud.

Closing borders. Too late and reopened too early

Eat out to help out. Massive transmission risk

Large public gathereings. Allowed to go on far too long

Thats pretty much all the major decisions and everyone he got wrong

Don’t forget, as we were reminded in the news every 25 seconds – those were ‘UNPRECEDENTED TIMES’. They kind of had to roll with the punches and make it up as they went along. Hindsight is a wonderful thing. The furlough scheme saved my bacon and I’m not well off. I’m getting the vibe that you don’t like the tories or something..? If they’d locked down too early you’d be ranting about authoritarianism. Closed borders? Massive massive racists! Test & Trace and Eat Out To Help Out I agree with you.

I don’t like the tories and can’t stand BJ.

However, how was furlough massively skewed towards the well off?

The absolutely biblical rain greeting Lizzie in Downing Street seems to have lent an appropriate Book of Revelations air to proceedings

Yeah I was wondering that. Everyone I know who benefitted from it worked in pubs, factories, hotels, garages etc. People like myself in mid-senior office roles were all working from home on normal pay.

Nor me… in fact, you don’t need hindsight… you can either flip to the Covid thread to see posters here calling for earlier action for both the main “lock downs”… or check Hansard to see Labour doing so from the front and back benches. Johnson followed, and followed slow, late, and haphazardly. There was a cost for that. Same goes for the financial help, which was late and conditional, causing many people to lose their incomes… including many I know who are still piecing things back together as this new crisis hits them.

So – first speech as PM and she kicks off with a lie. Great start.

Strange speech, she seemed to admit that the country is in a real mess on many fronts.
I am glad I don’t work in the NHS because a big pile of shit is heading that way

Regardless, it’s done. Most people have moved on.

… except you, who were the one who brought it up in this thread in the first place.

But when her car stopped and she got out to speak the rain had mysteriously stopped.

I see this as a sign of her greatness, truly she is the Blessed One.

So she’s going to spaff money like a pissed sailor on shore leave while simultaneously cutting taxes?

    Righto

Yeah I got that too. I did wonder if it had slipped her mind that the Tories had been in government for the last 12 years.

Ernie was defending johnson again and said he got things right thru the pandemic . I was merely pointing out he got every major decision wrong.

If they’d locked down too early you’d be ranting about authoritarianism. Closed borders? Massive massive racists!

Nope i was calling for lockdown and closed borders early well before it happened

Sorry for the diversion. I just find ernies defense of Johnson very odd. I can only assume blinded by being a brexiteer

As I said (and I think you at the time) it wasn’t haphazard as such it was taking whatever course reduced any options to non and basically avoided any decisions.

Probably most shocking being the one to send Covid patients into nursing homes and then to follow that up deny nursing homes the ability to even purchase PPE.

Honestly… that sounds like bollox – how could it be true … except that’s what happened.

£20 a week for those on benefits. Up to 2.5 grand a month for those in work. Thats well above national avearge income.

    Ernie was defending johnson again

I was pointing out that not everything Johnson ever did was wrong – like the time that he had to rely on the Labour Party for a covid related vote in the Commons.

If you want to interpret that as “Ernie defending Johnson again” that’s up to you, I frankly can’t be arsed, it’s obvious that it’s not possible to have a sensible discussion about the issue with you.

The two aren’t linked like you think they are. It depends on which taxes and what spending.

Spaffing money to get us through the CoLC is the right thing to do.

    The speech.

She hasn’t got “it” has she?

Can’t but help think the Tories are already lining up the next replacement ready for the conveyer belt.

    – gov has no response
    – Labour announce policy
    – gov tries to match policy far too late, while also funnelling money upwards
    – Labour points out where that money is going
    – gov makes token effort to reduce money going upwards far too late
    – more of the public can see we’d be better off with Labour running things

    x repeat

    Government fix people’s bills.

    Debate shifts.

    Labour stranded.

Agreed. If it’s done right, ie: proper investment

But she’s going to use it to give tax cuts which disproportionately favour the better off when inflation is already through the roof

    rone

Labour seem to have been wrong-footed on this particular policy. Although I guess Labour could probably make the case to voters that they offer fiscal responsibility as opposed to the Tories spendthrift tax and spend attitude, it might win voters over.

    Can’t see it.

Micro economics trump’s macro here. They won’t care.

    Labour keep doing that rubbish.

You defend Johnson continally on here. He did not get one major decision right on covid. Doing the right thing much too late is not getting things right

I keep thinking the same. But who? I want to place a bet on it now, day one… but doubt I’ll get odds on “anyone” fighting the next general election instead of her… they’ll want a name, yeah? That’s a far harder call…

Haven’t 12 letters of no confidence already been sent?

Like Winston Churchill post wilderness years Boris Johnson will return triumphantly.
