Oh cheers for that motorman, I was going to go with the FSA , but I like the sound of the ability to change the other ones out. Getting good bearings through work is pretty handy too 😉

swavis you tosser! This means I need one fast. I phoned Bothy but in my size if I want a Mukluk 2012s are gone and 2013s are really unlikely till next year. There may be a mukluk 3 2013 available. There are Pugsleys and Black Ops. What’s best for a fat knacker who will mainly use it on snow but with the occasional beach ride?

devs go for the black Ops over standard pugs then, for the wider rims, and the thumbies which do not pack in when layed down into soft sand as can happen to trigger shifters, the black Ops have these fitted 🙂

I flipping LOVE those bikes! That yellow Surly looks just the thing… and even comes in my favourite colour.

Anyone willing to contribute to the ‘Buy SaxonRider a fat bike’ fund?

As CK says, can’t really go wrong with Black Ops IMO. Also remember that the on one bikes should be out pretty soon

o-o have 2 weeks to set a release date as that is when I will be off to Aviemore to try the Pug and Black Ops. I suspect it won’t be long after that before I’m clown biked up. We will be able to have our own Moray fat bike club! I see your tracks about.

I quite often work there. I’m away for a week or so from sunday so it’ll be the week of 22nd before I’m there to test a bike. Bothy have them.

Haven’t read all the thread but I’ve looked at the picjers.

What sort of riding are you doing on fatbikes? Is it all sand & snow & 15ft-wide fireroads or can you take them round trail centres & smash them through gnar-tech etc?

    Just curious like.

For me, personally, it’s a mix if gheycoremincelite™ ie, the Singletrack around Delamere, and the nice open Beaches of Anglesey so far..

I’m just back riding after an op, so taking it easy, but hoping for longer day rides next year.

My plan is to get Tim @Sideways to get me squared away with a Maverick front fork so I’ve got some bounce, and see where it takes me from there.

Shaggy has just done the Transalp on his, & yes, he is a god among men, but it answers a few questions on what they can do..

To be fair, it’s like Singlespeeds IMHO.. I never thought I would want one, until I tried it.

    And loved it.

I find my fat bike on the beach dull as dishwater.

It rocks in snow, mud and trail centres (i would like a sus fork for the jumps), perhaps I’m missing something?

    Hmm thanks for the replies.

A fatbike looks great fun and I can mince with the best but I don’t think I’d ever use one.

But somehow I’d like one 🙂

What are they like to ride in soft mud? Do you get a benefit from floating on top, or is it a case of sticking to the ground more (ie harder work?)

And what do you do about punctures? That would take an age to pump (my only experience has been waiting for a friend to fix his on a -10c bivvy ride)

In soft mud they tend to just cut through it… unless its really, really deep, the normal rules apply..

The irony of putting on a 4″ tyre for mud isn’t lost on me. 😉

    As for punctures?

Not had one *yet* but yeah, I imagine its not a quick process..

Fat bikes really really excel in mud; when friends are pushing, I’m riding, but you do have to work for it.

toons – I had my 9:ZERO:7 round Hamsterley last week. The wee trail centre sections starting at Transmission were great fun but why a 14km fireroad loop to get there?

i took mine out on a neeps group ride round kirkhill once

was leading through a known boggy section

i floated over the bog – david followed my track immediately behind me and went up to his hub and over the bars, my tread marks were barely an inch deep into the mud

A couple of 16gram CO2 cartridges would see you right.

If you are using a standard pump, remember that there’s a lot of air but it’s very low pressure – typically somewhere between 6 and 12 psi.

I put stans juice in my tubes, saved a few punctures all ready!
