Gravel bike / all road bike / gnarmac bike? Call it what you will. A look in the tripster thread shows how popular this type of bike is getting, but the tripster isn’t the only game in town, so lets have a look at yer bike mister.

My AWOL. Wanted a Vaya, but this was available through C2W. I’ve not been disappointed.

I’m also disappointed that no one has commented on the state of my lawn / gate / pet buffalos. 🙂

Shall we add “what tyres for?”… Too???

I use Challenge Griffos for 70% of my rides, 10% I use challenge Limus, 10% Clement X’Plor MSO40’s and just bought some of these babies.. Challenge Almanzo for fast gravel and super hardpack. I’m out today on them, I’ll let you know what they’re like.

I seem to have acquired one of these by accident on Thursday. Bit of crossover between this and other 2 bikes I have but 13thFloorMonk was a slick salesman and it couldn’t resist. First ride tomorrow.

    Those Vayas look luvverly.
Vorlich, how does the Awol ride unladen? I think the position looks great, but wondered if it was too much of a touring bike to ride well without another 80kG of stuff strapped to it?

My CrossCheck earler in the year.
    And now, after some fettling.

Not strictly a gravel bike, not enough clearance for larger volume tyres at rear, but with Giant 28 road tyres it certainly handled tracks, trails and canal tow paths in Brittany last week….

I accidentally bought a Vaya frameset earlier this year, but it’s only had one, quick post-build outing so far, and has sat in the house doing nothing since (which reminds me, I *really* must get around to taping the bars and putting it’s proper pedals on). 🙄

Probably blurring the interface twixt gravel n’ monstercross at this point (but as it’s currently running 29 x 1.8’s and moustache bars, I can probably throw my Peregrine in too I think).

I guess it’s a ‘cross bike in old money but I use it for 50/50 bridleway-bashing/tarmac rides and mundane stuff like going to the shops.

I might cycle to work scheme this year and might get a versatile road bike so have been looking at the AWOL

I can see that it’ll be fine touring and off road

But would it be crazy to put road tyres on and go for day rides on it?

Yes, let us know. I’m running Schwalbe Sammy Slicks on my CAADX through the summer, which seem to be slightly lighter and a lot cheaper than the Challenge tyres. I’d be interested to know if there was a reason to spend the extra.

Am still in the market for a tourer/commuter/trainer…wanting something light after a Vaya, seems the TCX and maybe CAADX are the lightest for around a grand?

The AWOL rides really well unladen. The rear stays are quite skinny and compliant as it’s designed for front loading so very comfy and has a nice springy feel. I did Bristol to London in a day on mine a couple of weeks ago and it was perfect.

PS red pedals = go faster I think it’s the same deal with spoilers and HP on a Nova.

Phew, hot down here lads. 86ks on all sorts of terrain, gravel, rough Tarmac and hardpck dry single track..and yeah, I know my garden pool needs a blue felt pen colouring it in and yup, the shingle needs racking 😆

As is, these Almanzos are just flipping amazing. I set out with 55psi in the rear and 50 in the front, scuttling off for an hour then dropped to 40 rear 35 front and settled on 35 rear and 30 front and I’ve found the balance point. Grippy, rolling, subtle and supple. Worth the money? Hell yes, I think I’ve found ,the tyre exactly for these conditions .. Cost? Hmmm, bit more than some would pay but I don’t care TBH.. I just buy stuff.

Just fitted Knards to my Singular. Just enough room.
Came from Specialised Trigger 33’s & before that Challenge Griffos. The Griffos were awesome until they felt bits.

No photo’s but i use my Espresso (shit brown) Roadrat in road bike trim (Tiagra) for cinder track, canal path and Tarmac duty. Still using the skinny road types and have been puncture free amazingly, but just ordered some sammy Slicks. Really versatile bike. Been meaning to cut guards and a rack but I like the naked look.

I’ve found the AWOL to be great unladen, it’s a nice comfy bike. I’ve not done any significant distance with it properly loaded up, so can’t comment on what it’s like, but as noted, it’s designed for low-riders.

It’s my first drop bar bike, so I may be talking crap, but I don’t see why it couldn’t do all day road miles, might want to stick some skinny tyres on it though.
