iPhone5- Wtf. Not impressed

jambalaya: many of the nice Android handsets have HDMI-out on them so don’t need a separate set-top box at all.
So you can use it like one of those really old Betamax recorders with the wired ‘remote’ control? 🙄
GrahamSFull MemberI don’t particularly like the menu etc on the iphone’s- I kinda hoped Apple may change things. Neither the Iphone or S3 are/were as intuitive as my old 9700 Blackberry.
What is not intuitive about a grid of icons that start apps when you press them? Where did you honestly struggle with that?
How intuitive is the Blackberry interface in comparison?
Which of the four envelopes there do I press for email?
I’m used to the unintuitive system of having one icon that says “Mail” under it 😉horaFree MemberYou can remove icons very quickly from the screen
The central dongle (mouse) button can be rocked fwd up, side or down to open a new text etc in one swift move. The keyboard was great however Blackberry seem to have been left behind- Their subsequent models to the 9700 just aren’t any good (the issues haven’t been addressed from earlier models).deviantFree MemberGrahamS – Member
The notable difference is the solutions to the Apple threads don’t involve rooting it, flashing custom rom, using a different bootloader, installing task killers…
If somebody has an Android phone that requires any of the above to get it working properly then they have a duff phone and should return it.
Rooting, Jailbreaking, Flashing etc are all great if you’re that way inclined, i’ve seen some stunning custom ROMs running on Android handsets….but really since version 2,1 (we’ve since had 2.2 Froyo, 2.3 Gingerbread, 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and now 4.1 Jellybean) the OS has been stable and has a level of customisation making rooting obsolete for casual users.
If you cant get a current Android handset to do something you want it to do then i’d suggest (user error aside obviously) that what you’re asking isnt yet possible on a phone, they’re that good at the moment.
They have taken all the simple functionality of iOS and run with the idea of what an OS can do, multiple home screens, live/real time widgets, scrolling notifications, the beginning of emails, texts etc showing on the lock screen when you pick the phone up so you dont have to unlock the phone to see who just emailed/texted/called etc, instant compatibility with most PCs without being tied to iTunes or other proprietary software, genuine multitasking (see the Galaxy S3’s screen within a screen for the most impressive demonstration of this)….battery life was a problem with early Android phones, the OS is more of a drain than iOS….because it does more obviously.
More efficient chipsets and bigger batteries have largely solved the problem, lets not get carried away now and hold the iPhone up as a shining example of battery life….its about on a par with the Galaxy S3 at the moment and some way behind the current batch of Motorola devices touting huge batteries….recent tests from various tech sites say it’s a small amount better than the 4S was with it’s battery….that’s on current 3G and WiFi technology, wait until 4G is switched on and watch the battery life drain much faster, eventually Apple are going to have to start making bigger handsets for the batteries that 4G requires.
Task killers are a hang over from early Android, since 2.3 (in 2010) the stock OS has the feature to see whats running and stop tasks/Apps as the user sees fit….outdated comments like stating Android devices need task killers would be like me criticising the iPhone for not having a flash or being able to record video….but that was back on the 3G version, times change and OS move on.
I have a mate who swears by Apple, has the laptop, the phones etc…i have used all of his devices since he got a 3G back in 2008, they are good phones….the design of the 4,4S and 5 is superb….but i keep replacing my own handset with Android (Hero, Desire HD, Nexus-S and One-S) because they do everything his phone does and more…..and they’re cheaper, at one point his 3Gs (i think?) was £40+ per month on O2, this strikes me as faintly ridiculous, my current phone was free with a £27 monthly bill (unlimited data too) with my network wanting £34 per month and an up front fee to get the iPhone-5….
….i will happily pay a premium for a product that is the best or has certain unique features, the iPhone did….in 2008.
Everybody else has caught up and the price being paid is now for the kudos of simply owning the device rather than what is is capable of, it has become a fashion item which i think is a bit sad.
There was a joke on-line a while a go which went:
Q. How do you know if somebody has an iPhone?
A. They’ll tell you.
The gist being that somebody with this device is often such a try-hard that they will start a conversation by referencing their phone….you know, to show how cool they are.
What was once the leftfield choice of hipsters around the world is now abut as mainstream as white goods get…is that irony, i dont know i’m obviously not cool enough?!My current HTC One-S is a glass and metal build, has a sensible sized screen and weighs about the same as the new iPhone, it also has chip architecture more advanced than the new iPhone (more efficient 28nm process as opposed to 32nm in the iPhone), is currently on 38% battery remaining after 29hrs – it gives me genuine 2 day use….and was released 6 months ago….if it was an Apple device i dread to think of the mass hysteria it would’ve generated.

Really, I always mention my job, car or the fact I have an enormous c0ck (to the girls only of course), never the phone 🙂
horaFree MemberIf you really want to guage what is ‘cool’ in the mobile market- walk into any large Chinese restaurant at Dim Sum time and see what phones are sat on the tables next to each persons bowl..

Surely if you just put your iphone 5 on the table it’d provide that message to them for you, you wouldn’t have to waste your breath? 😉

That sounds a bit try-hard if we’re honest, doesn’t it?
MrSmithFree MemberNot impressed? Don’t buy one then. I’m not impressed with maddona, britains got talent, pizza hut or john smiths beer so I don’t consume their products, watch the program or patronise their restaurants, it’s not a hard decision to make as a consumer but I guess for some people everything has to be made into some kind of ordeal or life-crisis.

BUT PEOPLE MUST KNOW ABOUT THE PRODUCTS I DO NOT LIKE!

Hora in not finding a specific product to live up to his expectations shockaYeah i thought that!
Hora if you want to be pleasantly surprised then get one of the cheap to mid range HTCs….the Wildfire-S, the new Desires (Desire-S, Desire-C and Desire-x) and all will give you the essential smart phone functions of email, media, sat-nav, WiFi, etc with screens less than 4 inches and better battery life than the quad-core mega screened flagships out there….they are the smart choice for people who want to take the thing off charge in the morning and forget about it….no top up charge needed, no need to toggle functions off to preserve battery life.
DeadlyDarcy….just demonstrating what is out there if people take their Apple blinkers off.
deadlydarcyFree Memberjust demonstrating what is out there if people take their Apple blinkers off.
No you’re not. You’re insulting a whole raft of people, all of whom have varied reasons for why they might choose to use an iPhone. I would have thought there were enough Android v iOS threads at this stage where posters may have grown out of simply insulting people for their choice of phone. It seems, from this thread, not, sadly.

You are the Fandroid CountZero and I claim my five pounds 😀
You make the common mistake that people who like iOS are somehow blinkered, unaware that other devices offer other benefits, or fashion sheep.
I’m none of those.
I’m tech savvy. Have a tech job. I understand very well the benefits and limitations of iOS and Android. And I’m really not interested in being cool or fashionable.
Your argument seems to be “people only buy iPhones because they are cool. They are idiots. And iPhones aren’t cool, they are mainstream. Androids are cool. They should buy those” 😕
I could answer your points one by one but I can’t be bothered with yet another Android vs iOS spaffest – suffice to say I think you’re wrong on most of them. 😀

Took my iPhone (4) off charge this morning. Used it to track my commute on Endomondo; took a couple of calls, played a couple of games and listened to some music; it’s at 68% and I will shortly use it to track my commute home. No top up charge or toggling functions required, despite its age.

I’m confused. I had one of two products in mind to chose from.
When did I ever consider Madonna or Britains got Talent. Get a better analogy (or stop being a STW negative stalker).
If you post up a topic on a forum its for discussion otherwise using your rationale unless a topic is asking for advice all are attention seeking?
Binners, I went to Ken’s in Chorlton- ta. 13quid, to sort the wheel. They started offering me DH wheel as a replacement as they said the wheel was abit ‘used’ 😆

I couldn’t give a rat’s arse whether he’s slagged off the phone. It’s slagging off the users that gets a bit tiresome.
JamieFree Memberuh oh deviants in trouble hes – slagged off the latest iphone on middleclasstrackworld !!!!!!!
Not really, Komrade Kimbers. It’s more, as usual, someone has said that the only reason people are buying an iPhone is because it matches their earrings. This is not always the case, and it’s only fair people can say this.

Alot of porn seems to feature iphone’s (so I’m told).

This!
My phone has faults. I don’t 😀

You must have rather different specialist tastes to me hora.
It’s not even like the vibrate function on the iPhone is very strong… 😯However, I do suspect iPhones are a big reason why certain “video-based sites” no longer require flash 😀
binnersFull MemberHora – Ken F’s talked me into a more …ahem… ‘substantial’ rim for a gentleman of my proportions, after I totally pringled a brand new XC717 😀

Read your OP. I mentions nothing about looking for a new phone and the choices out there or advice re phone choice, such as ‘ I looked at the new Jesus phone and not impressed, anyone tried the xyz?’
Who suggested YOU were using those analogies? They were my examples of consumer choice.
Who mentioned attention seeking? It wasn’t me? Are you an attention seeker? Maybe a qualified health professional can help?kimbersFull MemberJamie – Member

it is after all just a phone

Yes it says anyone not anything else. I wasn’t asking for suggestions on phones just opinions from people who’ve experience the iPhone5.
I also went on to state my choice had been down to the Iphone5 or S3. Nothing else.
I don’t go on your topics posting negativity do I? You have a choice, I imagine you’d avoid my topics if it irks you so.
MrSmithFree MemberInternet forums are not worth getting “irked” about.
I didn’t read the middle 2 pages, did I miss anything?
My post would still be useful to those who have trouble making purchasing decisions, maybe not helpful to those who lack scruples but I certainly wouldn’t call it ‘negative’FWIW buy a 2nd hand 4 and get a sim only deal, you will save £££’s but lack a bit of credibility when you order your dim sum.

Poor effort. Joining in too. Re-read the posts.
boxfishFree Member£500 for a phone? Why, I could but a Dura Ace Di2 rear mech for that! Bargain.

We did. Then he died 😥
Edit: Just noticed capitalisation. Very well played, Sir.
