I think these sort of threads are more like a mixture of an informal support group for people with an uncontrollable bike buying habit and a stark warning of how bad things could get if you don’t keep it under control.

I have to disagree. Can’t be many folk with a more uncontrollable bike buying habit than me, but I only have one honest guv . . . build No 101 😛

    . . . and yeah, wot Karin said (except I don’t collect bikes – I collect debt 😕 )

I do the retrobike thing too, so some are sunny day riders only…..
but currently 11 (including those in bits)

    1991 Saracen Trekker Hydrotech
    1992 Cannondale M700
    1996 Yeti Kokopelli
    1998 Hoffmann Dirty130 BMX
    1997/8 Massi Master
    2002 Sunn Crosss (resting)
    2004 Global Softail Ti

Re. the ‘inspirational’ thing….I’m a bike mechanic, so it goes with the territory that I end up with several bikes. Hell, I even forgot one! My ‘Custom Cycles’ touring bike with a 59 tooth chainring and assorted Campy and other weird stuff….
My Ti road bike cost 20 bucks and some swapping action. The (new) frame was given to me.
The Custom Cycles was donated by a customer. I just bought some tyres and baaaaa tape.
My DMR probably cost around 300 bucks all in, and that’s with a new frame, Straitline stem, SLX cranks bla bla bla….
My ’52 Schwinn cost 40 bucks.
My Norco VPS has currently cost 30 bucks, and that includes buying JB Weld to fill in the slayed out head tube!

In my job I tend to end up with a whole load of free stuff and I like ‘projects’.

My only bike that really cost significant money is my 1999 Kona Pahohoeohoeohoeohhoeohoe, which in triggers Broom style has morphed into my current Nomad 12 years later (and around 7 frames later!)

    4 rideable ones

    Lynskey Cooper ti road bike
    slot drop out inbred
cheap ebay Graham Weigh cx bike
Brew pro xl BMX race bike

plenty of other bits and pieces knocking about, but not all the right ones to put a full rideable bike together.

Have spent the last couple of months lusting after “proper” road bikes and I’m bound to buckle and acquire one sooner rather than later.

If you’ve got room to store them, no kids who are starving and barefoot because of your bike habit, and no other vices that swallow up your spare £, then why not?

If I won the lottery I’d have a massive strip-lit underground bunker with a bike for every day of the month in it. And an au-pair mechanic to keep them all in good nick.

Hmmmm…..all I can say is that this thread is way, way better than the endless dull and dreary “aspirational” car threads that keep appearing.

5 desperately trying & failing to reduce it to 4 🙄 All of them variations on the 3 x 9 or 2 x 9 hardtail theme

One, my crosser. It has to be my trainer, my road bike and back to a crosser to race on at weekends.
I had my collection prematurely cut short.

4 in the house, 5 if you include the R1; but for me just the one (two) so must try harder 😳

Most people don’t manage to be so disciplined with their lack of self control as you though!

My comment was a bit serious, having got rather carried away myself over the last few years when I had a few quid and ended up swapping bikes every other month I know it can end up detracting from the actual riding.

Luckily I’m a bit skint and fully settled on my bikes now.

    I have just four.

And a set of sheels in the shed, a fork in the utility room, a frame under my bed…..shit. I have five, don’t I?

5 for me, 9 between the 3 of us.

I have best road (race bike), winter road, TT bike, HT MTB, and cross bike. All of them get used, although the TT bike hasn’t been used in about 3 months. Apart from the winter road bike I race all of them at various points in the year.

OH has a hybrid and a road bike, Jnr has a road/cross Isla bike and a mountain bike. The only bike that doesn’t see much action is the OHs road bike, she’s just never got into riding it. She keeps saying we should sell it, for the spec we’d probably sell it for more than we paid, but if she got into road riding and wanted to get one eventually it would cost twice as much.
