    5… DH bike, big full suss, hardtail, commuter, BMX. (the BMX never gets ridden- its whole purpose is to stop me from buying a BMX)

    Just went N-1 and dismantled a bike without any intention of replacing it. This is not normal.

    this might not be the right place to say it, or it might be exactly the right thread…

    but if you are trying to get yer mate, who may not have much money, into mountain biking, you’ve got them some bits, got their cheap bike to a certain standard, done a few rides and they are starting to love it.

    and then they find STW and threads like this. it’s just some other aspirational bollocks isn’t it. Remember when you first started riding bikes and that buzz? no number of bikes will replace that without the time to ride them. it’s N+1-T

    @kevevs I totally agree, but there are two things to consider.
    1) People who reply to threads like this will have a lot of bikes
    2) This forum is besieged with a whole load of boring middle aged, middle class blokes who have been riding since the late ’80s. Their outlet from their dull soulless lives is bikes. They are bound to have a lot of bikes.

    I’d say that anyone who loves bikes cannot be totally devoid of a soul.. it goes with the territory no? Particularly if the bike(s) was mostly built by the rider.

    I don’t run a car. I’m just a 40 year old teacher who’s been into bikes since the late 70’s.. My rent, council tax, bike parts, and food etc consume most of my money.

    Ok I’ll bite :D. I don’t think it’s been an aspirational bollocks thread, I don’t particuarly feel people have been boasting “I;ve got this many look at me”. It’s interesting to see what people have and how some of the odder amongst us seem to have a fair few!!!

    As one of the guiltier parties of bike accumulation it’s my hobby, I’m not interested in a flash car, or flash tv’s etc and I like fettling bikes. My bikes have been accumualted over the years and one of the reasons I’ve so many is for some reason I don’t like getting rid of them – odd maybe but it’s the way I am. Agree entirely sbout time to ride being.

    Re your mate, well done forn helping him, but do you think me and Mrs K, and probably the rest of the “bike collectors” here have this many bikes and don’t lend them out to mates?

    And one final reason for having loads of bikes;

    “Enjoy yourself, while you’re still in the pink
    The years go by, as quickly as you wink
    Enjoy yourself, enjoy yourself,
    It’s later than you think”

    Aspirational? Not for me.

    I think these sort of threads are more like a mixture of an informal support group for people with an uncontrollable bike buying habit and a stark warning of how bad things could get if you don’t keep it under control.

    Aspirational bollocks? Not actually sure what you mean, but here’s my position:

    we were asked, we didn’t volunteer the information;

    it IS a bike forum so you might reasonably expect people to have bikes;

    some of us may be middle-aged men, but I am an elderly woman who has been into biking for many years and so built up a collection;

    I don’t collect paintings or go clubbing or buy designer clothes or live in a fancy house or go on expensive holidays, I have my bikes, three of them hang up on the wall in my lounge, my holidays – actually my whole life – is based around riding my bikes and being with my dog. It’s a choice I made about my life.

    Bikes (and Missy) is what I iz.

    I try to keep things to a riding bike and a project otherwise[as many here will agree] you get inundated with them.

    Owning a lot of bikes is hardly extravagant – you can get 10 top end carbon beauties for the price of a brand new family car (and I hear that some families have more than one car – outrageous!).

    I’m only allowed 3 at a time, one for each type of riding; road, off-road and commuting.

    Currently of the view that the road bike isn’t the right one any more, the commuter was cheap and would be nice to upgrade and I need to get the MTB stripped, resprayed and rebuilt with new bits.

    This may be because various illnesses and injuries have stopped me riding properly since the summer and I’m going out of my mind!

    Lol genuinely it’s not big or clever. Don’t be too jealous, my cars are utter s#!&e!and I struggle to find the time to ride half as much as I’d like to because of work commitments.
    I have to admit that the unbuilt list is criminal,I’ll be working on this over the winter.

    3 bikes. An Orange Patriot 7+ with Lyriks and fox,a Pitch with a dhx 3 and fox 32s and lots of Easton and a Pinnacle Coldharbour hardtail. These are all excellant bikes and very versatile. I use the Pitch as a trail weapon and the Orange for heavier stuff. Pinnacle has been gathering dust lately which is a shame coz its great as well. Love my bikes.

    I prefer to catergorise the family’s bikes by the colour of the rainbow:

    1. Red: Kona Honky Tonk (winter road bike, me)

    3. Red/White: Colnago Primavera(summer road bike, me)
    4. Orange: Cotic Soul (HT, me)

    8. Indigo: Ridgeback MX 16 (#2 son)
    9. Violet: Nothing! I do however have a grey Stumpy FSR which I now realise I clearly need to get resprayed violet!

    I have far too many:

    – 29er XC bike – ridden, but not really enough;
    – 150mm full-sus – bought because I got talked into doing the Mega, far too much bike for me really;
    – 140mm hardtail – a favourite, but currently lending its running gear to the 29er;
    – a moderately fancy road bike, not ridden in over 12 months;
    – a CX/road/tourer – getting a lot of use;
    – a cargo bike – used daily;
    – a Brompton, on long term loan.

    I need to get it down considerably. Cargo bike is staying, CX/road/tourer is staying. I can probably build a sensible weight hardtail for everything, but will have to stop imagining I can really race big mountain enduro DH races…

    Doesn’t feel very aspirational, feels like a sad bloody burden and a tragic waste of money and time. 🙂
