Interesting to learn that containers float like that. I assumed they weren’t watertight enough to last more than a few hours before being gone forever.

it’s not really the integrity of the container doorseals, more the contents of said container that cause it to float! Imagine a container filled with 100,000 bubble wrapped or blow mould encased nicnaks from china, effectively, those provide just enough buoyancy to make the container, er, buoyant!

well I’ve scanned the Atlantic on Google Satellite and can’t see anything. there were no icebergs either, so maybe that bit’s photoshopped.
my neighbour’s cat is pretty good at finding rats – I’ll ask him if he’s seen it.

I have to say, the original exeter express and echo article really must take speculation levels up to a whole new level!

So, it’s been 12 months since it was last spotted, which means by now it could literally be almost anywhere in any ocean, and the source of the mutant rat angle is “The Sun”, that well known expert publication on all things rodent!

Brilliant story though, and one for the HIGNFY missing words round surely!

Aha!!! the Royal Mails sudden change of policy on shipping sealed containers now makes sense. It’s all to do with protecting the worlds shipping lanes!!!

They have got a stealth technology that can hide an entire cruise liner from the best detection technology of the word’s navies…

They only want to us think it’s drifting, unpiloted.

It could part of a larger plan. The floating headquarters of the inter-continental rat brain interface super computer.

Those searching for the ship say there are likely to be thousands of disease-ridden rats on board with no source of food except each other.

So there could in fact just be one, well hard, fat rat on the ship.

So the rest were pie-rats? 🙂

Actually this could be the loving and caring UK govt’s answer to all those pesky oldies sucking up tax money.

“Free luxury cruise – for the rest of your life if you want”

Jeez, I should get a seat in the Lords for that idea.

Does anyone else think the headline is utter carp For starters how can it be missing if it’s known to be close to the shore of Devon?

An Italian captain can’t get 50 miles out of port without crashing into land while a bunch of rats can spend a year at sea and no one can even knows where they are!

On a serious note if this thing comes ashore in Cornwall it could be devastating for this years pasty harvest.

So, What happens to Canada if this thing with its army of mutant rats, say for example, makes it to Russia?

Said rats go to war with Russia which is effectively Canada going to war with Russia.

This could be the start of a world war or something.

Send it to Afghanistan and bring our troops home.

If it was getting towed to scrapper, possible that epirb had been removed. Its not like a ship being crewed by rats is going to fulfil any other Safety requirements…

I think you’re giving the headline writers a bit too much credit. A better question would be “if it’s missing and no-one knows where it is then how can they say it’s going to be crashing into Devon?”

    This article is pretty funny…
    http://edition.cnn.com/2014/01/24/tech/web/apparently-this-matters-lyubov-orlova-ghost-ship/

The private owners of the ship racked up too much debt, and, in 2010, Canadian authorities seized the vessel, which had been docked in St. John’s, Newfoundland where it was, presumably, quite bored.
Two years later, the Canadians sold it for scrap and began hauling the old girl down to the Dominican Republic so it could be dismantled and possibly turned into steel drums.

But then, only one day after leaving port, the towline snapped in heavy seas, and the Lyubov Orlova decided to piss off across the Atlantic. As one does when you have nothing better to do and you’re a boat.
“(Sigh) I would like to have seen Montana.”

Eventually, another Canadian ship was sent out to corral the wayward vessel in what can only be described as the slowest, crappiest, worst-attended rodeo of all time. But once captured, the Lyubov Orlova was safely hauled farther out to sea, away from Canadian oil rigs.
And then they just sort of cut it loose in international waters. Because, hey, what’s the worst that could happen?

Transport Canada, the government department responsible for roads and planes and trains and SHIPS YOU JUST LET WANDER OFF INTO THE OCEAN, assured its citizens that the Lyubov Orlova “no longer poses a threat to the safety of [Canadian] offshore oil installations, their personnel, or the marine environment.”
As for everyone else and the hundreds of diseased cannibal rats floating around the Atlantic?
    “Soory ‘boot that, eLyubov

I can confirm that that is indeed the DFDS boat we crossed from Dunkirk to Dover on, back in December.
The rats have uniforms & hats & everything now.
They haven’t quite got food prep up to spec yet, the Chicken Tikka was ghastly.

    Worst policeman evar.

All things considered, right now we actually can’t confirm or refute that somewhere in the Atlantic there may be abandoned ship, with rats, that they happen to be eating each other, and it may be headed for the UK. It could happen.

Is the ship heading for Britain’s coast?

It is possible, but unlikely. Chances are the ship sank somewhere in the North Atlantic. Of course no one knows for sure, but if it is still afloat and headed for Britain’s coast, it’s likely we’ll hear about it well ahead of time. Of course it’s also possible that the prevailing currents may have pulled the vessel south into the North Atlantic gyre and, just maybe, could one day wash up on the shores of Barbados. If we hear anything, we’ll let you know.

Just as a point of order: it’s quite possible that no-one involved in the whole affair was. Canadian apart from, perhaps, any sheriffs or whatever that were responsible for arresting the boat on behalf of the creditors seeking to enforce their judgement.

the Lyubov Orlova was secured by the Atlantic Hawk anchor handler but later ordered let loose by Transport Canada after drifting into international waters.

The Canadians are the main cause of this problem!

    What nationality are the rats?

Has anybody consulted with UKIP. Maybe we did something wrong again and this is just a plague of retribution. If we can correct our mistake maybe it’ll hit France instead.

UKIP has made a public statement to say it is not ratist, and rats are welcome in the party.

Immigrant cannibal rats are welcome because they can feed themselves, so it’s quite rational to allow them in.
