I used to have one a few years ago and I'm 5'8" long legs short body.
If you're a more 'normal' build I reckon up to 5'6" should be ok.
Hope that helps.

I used to have one and at 5'7", the Small was definitely TOO small for me. I mucked about with setback seatposts and longer stems but just couldn't get it right.

I'm 5.65" and the 2007 & 2010 SJ FSR was a bit too small for me. Buy a medium and whack a short sten and wide bars on it !

thanks fellas.
i'm 58 and a bit. i always had bikes that were to big before so i wanted to be sure it was nice and small and chuckable. but having put my bits back an a hard-tail frame with a longer top tube i'm thinking the stumpy is a bit too stumpy for me. already have lay back thompson and slightly longer stem than i wanted.
would explain a few things about control while climbing etc.
oh well...
stuck with it just now i guess

I'm 5'6" and ride a Medium 2010 FSR.

I test rode the medium, considered the small, but thought it would be too small for me. The standover height on the medium isn't great (30" inside leg), but is OK. Reach and everything else is fine - I changed the stem, but mainly so it matched the new bars & seatpost (ahem). I think it's about the same length. Took me a while to get my seat position correct, but I think I have it just forward of mid position on the rails and the KCNC seatpost has a small amount of layback (a bit less then the standard post though).

If you are 5'8, I'd definitely say that the small is too small.

Recently sold my 2011 Stumpjumper FST Elite. It was a small and was prefect for me - I'm 5'6

I'm around 5' 7" and I find my 2004 medium stumpy just a teeny bit too big, with an inline seatpost and 70mm stem. Like stumpy01 says the standover height is not fantastic. Entirely possible that I just have a weird body shape though.

I could probaly find you a buyer for that depending on what year it was etc.

My Mrs had one, she's 5ft 2ish, we sold it on ebay recently. A guy was buying it for his girlfriend as a present, well he was over the moon with it because it was a mint looking little bike and his girlfriend loved it too.

To cut a long story short I got a mail from him recently saying it had been nicked and they were both gutted!! Sad news. 😥

Anyway is was insured so not all bad, just felt sorry for the guy.

So be on the lookout for a black n red 2007 FSR in small with an SLX brake upgrade. It also had aour postcode scratched on the BB shell underneath a piece of insulation tape CM2 ***

Anyway I said I'd keep an eye out for another one for him as I know they don't come up very often and he may have his insurance payout by now.

Ps sold the bike as it was a little too big for the Mrs, she's gone womens specific now with a Safire.

I'm 6ft and ride a medium 2005 Stumpy S-works. 70mm stem and lay back post. It has the perfect amount of chuckability. It is probably the most fun mountain bike I've ever ridden.
