As in the same Shinola who use £5 quartz movements and have the cases made by Fossil, the same Fossil who make watches for DKNY, Michael Kors and Armani…?

If I’m spending 1k on a watch I want one made by a watch company, not some fashion brand outsourcing the manufacturing to to China and then making 50x margin on the rrp…

Seiko, Longines, Oris, Fortis, Glycine, Sinn, Damasko and Hamilton to name a few are all worth a look. If you’re open to buying s/h and want a mechanical chrono then do a search for ETA 7750 or Valjoux 7750 on ebay. The 7750 is found in all-sorts and is a great Swiss automatic movement. Tag use it and call it their Calibre 16, Hublot badge it a HUB4100, Breitling refer to it as their Calibre 13 etc etc…

Plenty of options out there if you do a bit of homework first.

Longines hydroconquest are lovely.

I bought an Oris diver watches a few years ago. Still worn daily and working fine. It’s rare I take it off to do something. Looks a little beat up now but that adds character.

Not sure what my next one will be. I like sea masters but they are quite popular and I’ve already got a divers watch so may go for a pilot watch – either Oris or IWC.

I’ve had my sea master for 17 years now. Spent my entire first months salary on it from my first job. (I’ve never been great at budgeting) I’m not from the sort of family that has heirloom jewelry either.

I’ve worn it every day since, cost £750, probably spent £200 on repairs and servicing. The glass is still perfect, body has marks all over it. I’ve gutted 2 houses in it, built 3 campers, loads of cars, swapped engines, even, swimming in the sea 😉 . It’s a seriously tough piece of kit. Highly recommended, in fact, pounds per wear, I’d say it’s probably even approaching a bargain but I’ll tread carefully on that point…

I decided not to go up to 1k for a watch and ended up with a tissot prc200.
Really comfortable and looks good too.
The shop staff asked if it was going to be an heirloom watch but my view is an heirloom is likely to cost more than a few hundred quid

Haha @ gofasterstripes. Mine are cheap basic ones 🙂 I am finding it’s a minefield with so many makes and what is good to buy and what is considered junk. Now I know what a newbie on here feels like with the ” what new bike for £?” threads.

If used then the best bang for buck is to go to Spring or Autumn fair at the NEC. It’s where the trade do their forward ordering. The jewellery section halls 19/20 has a second hand high end watch dealer that sells at trade. My wife has her own business which is how I end up drooling over nice watches.
You have to be there first thing as all the nice desirable stuff is snapped up-i went looking for a particular Speedmaster but they went early.

It’s easy to blag your way in-just create a fictional business name and pre register. Quite considerable savings to be made.

My choice would be a Rolex Airking for the fuss free option or a Speedmaster.

^^^^^RE my pic – three Bali Automatic Omega fakes and a Casio Ediface, back when there was a smart one available.

The fakes kept perfect time, but all succumbed to water ingress eventually. For $40 a pop, it was OK.

It’s always intrigued me as to how good some fakes are when people are asking £200+ and stating they have swiss movements etc.

Buy a fairly new used Steinhart or similar from eBay and you’ll probably just lose postage costs and fees. Not a bad idea ‘investing’ £25 or so in trying the odd watch before you commit a £1k. Better still take your time trying a few on in a city centre dealers like Jura or Watchfinder and take it from there. Bit like bikes, they can look great but the moment you try it on it won’t feel right.
Don’t overlook lug to lug length which can be important along with how high it sits and on what strap etc (bracelets balance a watch with heft whereas they can feel top heavy with a leather, rubber, NATO etc).
Sorting on eBay and buying the seller is the cheapest route aside to joining a forum and investing some time to learn.

I’ve seen a christopher ward motorsport inspired watch that looks good for not much but it’s got a Swiss quartz movement and my whole reason was to buy a mechanical second hand medium quality watch. I’ve spent most of this wet wkd watch searching and learning.

Torgoen T18. Bought recently after having other watches stolen in burglary. Online only sales. Very quick service. Does incur import duty though. Way below your budget. There tactical watch looks quite good as well

I really like the elliot brown crono, in blue c 500. I so nearly bought a n iwc crono but at c 4k for everyday use thought against it. Bought a used elliot brown off here, love it, dropped it in the gym last week and chipped the glass. Would have been gutted if it was a 4k watch, but 37 quid to get the glass replaced.

Have you guys seen this? Not into watches personally, but I thought some of you would probably enjoy this.

No offence (to flibrose) but in that case you can ignore the bulk of my suggestions and get a Citizen/Casio for <£250. They do a lot of busy watches like that.
PS a decent Swiss ETA movement isn’t so expensive but Swatch have restricted supply recently which is an issue. There’s some very good clone movements meaning similar design to ETA but made elsewhere and similarly regarded. Always nice ensuring an independent watchmaker can service them rather than having to return to the manufacturer. Damasko don’t supply their special rubber gaskets to anyone else but until recently they were all ETA mvts so could be serviced locally.
