Well, until yesterday, the furthest I'd ever done in a day was 80 miles on a road bike. east London to Windsor and back. The magical ton has bin a goal of mine for years now, but never got around to actually doing it. Me and Psychle's London to Brighton jaunt took me to 101.03 miles according to my cycle computer which is pretty accurate. So, a long-term ambition achieved, and a nice sense of satisfaction having done it. Pretty chuffed today, if a little stiff.

About a couple of miles from home, I did feel that I could possibly do another 10, even 20 miles. Not that I was going to, but I don't feel I reached my limit of endurance.

Psy's now on about doing stuff that is quite frankly stupid, but I'm sure there are many people on here who's achievements in terms of distance put us to shame. TdF boys and girls do silly milage, but then they're all on drugs and not well.

So what's your record for most miles in one day?

Oh, and distances in real money please; not silly foreign kilometres muck like Psychle insists on sounds more but isn't.

250 odd km (sorry don't know the miles) up and down for a long way then across the Massif Central, for L'Etape du Tour 2004. Jeanie Longo only put an hour into me over the day, was happy with that !

(JL 8.30, Hels 9.30)

Did the St Andrews run up and back in a day once, thats 134 miles I believe.

South London up to London Fields, Dunwich Dynamo out to Dunwich then rode to Ipswich, train back to London then rode to South London. Then twice round the block to make it up to 200 miles. 😉

Not really sure it counts to be honest given that there was a train ride in there (which I used to catch up on sleep!)

Did london to brighton off-road in a british heart foundation charity ride. Distance quoted was 72miles, you must have taken a hell of a detour.

Only about 40 miles...and that was on the road!

That's all going to change this summer though, lots of epic adventures planned!

225.41 Miles in 12 hours, did the National 12 Hour Time Trial in 2009. Most knackering thing I've ever done both physically and mentally.

I'd rather stick pins in my eyes than ride 100 miles on the road, but off road about 50 miles in winter, was enough

165 miles on a coast to coast. Set off at 4am and arrived around 5pm. There were a couple of feed stops along the way, probably 10.5-11hrs riding time...

Doing Milan San Remo sportive on Sunday. 294km!!

I've done Flanders (265km), Prais Roubaix (250km) and Liege (260km) so hoping this will be OK! PR almost counts as off-road as it has 50km of very gnarly (in places)cobbles.

Furthest I've ridden on a single day is 100 miles.

I raised some money for the British Heart Foundation by completing the Norwich 100.

Did the first 50 in well under 3 hrs, but after the 1/2 hour rest stop they insist you take, my body didn't want to restart, to do the last fifty. So the 2nd leg was a grind.

Next time I don't think I'll be stopping.

🙂

Well done, every hundred mile ride still feels like an achievement.

My first was by accident - 20 mile diversion whilst touring round the South West. When I got a road bike I did the Century a Month Challenge on the old Cycling Plus forum - made to September and then broke my collarbone!

Longest rides? 135ish miles a few times from S Wales (home) up to Birmingham (visiting family). Doesn't really count as one ride but did 180something miles in just over 24 hours last year as part of the Dunwich Dynamo:

Ride from home to Swansea station, train to Paddington
Ride from Paddington to my mate's in Edgware
Ride from Edgware to the start at Hackney
Hackney to Dunwich overnight
Dunwich back to Ipswich to get the train back to London*
Ride from Liverpool St to Paddington, train back to Swansea (first class to ensure some quality sleep!)
Ride from Swansea station home.

I doubt I'll improve on that any time soon, although there was talk of stepping up to doing the DD and then just turning round and riding back to London...

Oh, I ought to point out that our jaunt was mainly off-road, and although mainly flat, some sections were on loose stuff which does rob your speed a bit. SS too, so we were a bit limited on the fast flat bits. I take it some of these high milage rides are on road bikes, on roads? Does make a big difference in speed and therefore achievable distance covered no doubt.

118 miles. I joined a bloke on that ride who did 200 miles that day, and 300 in total over the weekend. The previous weekend he'd done 600km on an Audax, with about 2 hours' sleep.

In summary, 118 miles isn't very far.

Off road? Does riding round and round in circles count? Furthest must have been SITS as a soloist a number of years ago. I forget the distance but I think just over 120 miles (that'll be just over 5mph over 24 hours then :(). 90something miles at Brizzle bikefest tomorrow if all goes well.

Also did the SDW in a day thingy once which I think is more or less bang on 100 miles? Only time I've ever had proper saddle sores...

done just under 70 miles on the road bike, and approximately 36 miles on the mtb

Trying to get more 60+ miles on the road bike done this year, and i'm definately going to be doing more mtb distance stuff. Really really really started to enjoy it now i've got a more suitable bike (Even if it has got 6.7" rear suspension!)

not much at all... on the road probably 25mile, don't do much road cycling. 50mile off road, in Wales. Always feel I could do more miles if I wanted to but 5hours sat on bicycle saddle is more than enough for me and I start automatically steering towards the nearest pub 🙂

Just under 90 miles at Hit the North last summer, been up to 60 miles on my road bike this year and 50 off road riding from Bamford to Manchester. Am doing the Keilder this year, so hoping to get over 100 at that and hopefully between now and then on the road as well as part of my prep.

Oh yeah, off-road... SITS as a Pair a few years ago. Got 2nd. 🙂
I think we both did somewhere in the region of 200 miles. I could barely walk for about 3 days after that.

Again, not sure it counts cos of rest periods, sleep etc (if 3 lots of 20 minute powernaps count as "sleep") but it was within a 24hr period...

We then rode back via BW around Buttermere, Whinlatter, Keswick,Loughrigg Ter, Ambleside,Jenkyns Cragg, Dubbs Rd and down into Windermere.

At age 17, Whitehaven to Stockton on a 5-speed tourer with luggage.
About 116 miles through the Lake district & across the Pennines.

At 57, dead on 100 miles Reading to Bristol via the Kennet-Avon Canal psychopath and a couple of minor detours.

135 miles on day 2 of our LEJOG. 960 miles in 8 days total.

Some awesome rides being described - I'd like to do 150 miles fairly soon, and quite fancy road C2C in a day as well.

Pretty much the same on road and off

107 miles on road (also a 106 miles), this was part of a ride around the islands up by Glencoe, excellent day - the 106 miles was an extension of the Edinburgh - St Andrews thing that happens each year, I cycled back to Kinross.

About 106 or 107 miles off road - Kielder 100 last year, it was a tad over the 100.

My furthest was 130 miles on the road.
I cycled out to a reliability trial, rode that & home again after.
That was a loooong time ago now and not an experience I'll be repeating any time soon. 😉

Off road: last years Kielder 100, which was a bit more then 100 miles.
On road: 150Km (93 miles), the bike section of Zofingen Powerman Duathlon (with about 25 miles runing as well).

104 miles on road for the Trossach's ton, including to and from parked car to start/finish. But harder than that was 97 miles from Torriden to Ullpaool with full luggage including tent, camping equipment etc. Roads up West Cost are not very flat.....

Most on MTB is 65, but that did include some tarmac.

Aim to better both this year.

[quote=crazylegs]Oh yeah, off-road... SITS as a Pair a few years ago. Got 2nd
Nice! Was that a mixed pair? I remember a couple camped next to me a couple of years ago when I was riding solo did really well. If it wasn't you then ignore me! (but still impressed)

Most of my long rides have been on the road - I used to be quite into long tours and audaxes, so the longest I've done in a day probably would have been a 300k audax (180 miles ish I think). I mostly used to do 200s though, much less silly.

Much more tiring was a spur-of-the-moment 100 mile round trip to see a glacier that was way off my planned route on a Norwegian tour, with full luggage. That was, in hindsight, a bit foolhardy (ended up with ice in my shoe and losing a few toenails)

When I was a student in Plymouth I used to ride home to Bristol for the weekend a few times, over Dartmoor to Exeter then up the old A38. I think it was around 130 miles by that route. I used to be able to do it in a bit over 8 hours on a good day - doubt I could now though.

I don't know how people manage to do those sort of distances day after day after day, at race speed.

Off road I don't think I've done more than 60 in a day (but I'm usually on one wheel for that...)

Rob

having spent the spring riding 25-30 mile loops on my mountain bike, i'm due to head out to geneva in two weeks to do a loop of the lake... this works out at approx 175km and the plan is to do it non-stop.

i think it will probably kill me... i've never ridden that far, even when i was superfit back in the old days... worse still, i'm at le mans next weekend, so will still be suffering the effects.

98 miles on a fully loaded MTB tourer on my last day (plus a bit) of the C2C (mainly on road but I did take the off-road Rookhope incline option)- I got lost finding a campsite on the outskirts of Consett after finishing in Sunderland. Its funny, I remember looking at the computer at about 70 miles thinking 'I feel good to do another 30 miles' when I thought the campsite was only round the corner.

No, we did Men's Pairs. we were camped next to a team-mate of ours who was doing it solo and his wife pit-bitched for us too.
All I can say is that I'm glad I was on a full-sus. 200 miles off-road round Catton Park did horrible things to my arse, legs and back.

140 miles single speed while a bit pissed.

Last years Dunwich Dynamo I got grounded by the fun police due to a family BBQ. About 9:30ish everyone had gone home, so a cunning plan formed up in my beer addled brain in the way that strange things make sense when you are a bit bevied up. That was to ride from my gaff to Sudbury to meet the lads at halfway. Suffered a puncture enroute and while fixing it the lads whistled past unbeknown to me (as they were unexpectedly leading the pack). Carried on to Sudbury and a bit beyond, eventually realised I'd missed them so turned round and rode to Dunwich, then the lack of planning started to kick in when I realised that I'd got to get home too, so then rode back to the far side of Ipswich.

Can't claim it as non stop, as I stopped and waited at Sudders, then called in at Puddledodgers place at Hemingstone for bacon, and frankly had a few moments considering the widsom of my decison making sitting on barrier on the A12 somewhere between Dunwich and Ipswich....but thats furthest to date, and its not recommended.

Longest one day rides:

Road 316 miles
Road 214 miles

Off road 216 miles
Off road 214 miles
Off road 165 miles (lots of climbing in the off road ones!)

Furthest semi-regular ride is South Lincolnshire to Reading, around 140 miles. Tend to have a short day before I ride back.

Furthest on the singlespeed in one day (MTB, 32/12 with bald nobblies, but ridden on tarmac) 87 miles. Only 40mins slower than the same journey on the road bike.

[EDIT] 'Day' in this context is a continuous period of 24 consecutive hours, these may be over two callendar days, eg midday Saturday to midday Sunday is counted as one day.

Road - 150 miles Straford u Avon to Snowdon on a single speed when I was a silly 15yo.
Offroad - 135 miles my first solo Mayhem last year when I was a silly 45yo - notes Gees mileage above & shudders.
Once turned up for a medical in Nottingham after cycling the 140 miles there, the medical didn't last that long once I got them to believe me 🙂

316 miles in one day??? That's insane.

Some right nutters on here. Props to those doing mad long distances with luggage or over Alps and that. You're not right in the head...

60m off/on road around The Quantocks and Exmoor - did not include Dunkery Beacon. Was filthy, soaked and chapped at the end. Would do again.

50m on country roads in Somerset most years. And again this weekend - hopefully will be glorious and looking forward to it now I have road bike to do it on.

did the lord of the loops out of the dark peak guide. 115km on the sat nav 4089m of ascent, enjoyed the first 6 hours second 12 was a bit of a bind.

116 on road, once unladen last week and once with panniers in the Alps (surrounded by a few other similar days).

50 or so off road - never really do massive MTB rides.

Target for 14 months' time is >240 miles (road) in a day... seems a bit daunting at the moment.

Are you building up to do a 12 hour TT?

In 1972 I did an amazing day. Rode from home to start of the Stoke Llangollen Stoke 100m reliability trial (training race) then home. The trial was done in 4 hours and I won the sprint for the Llangollen sign from Phil Griffiths (in the year he won the silver at the Commonwealth Games) and Les West (4th at pro world champs in 1970) My greatest moment on a bike!!!! (other than getting back from the pub tonight)

That was 160 miles but like a fool I rode into Brum for a family do and home after that. It amounted to 240 in the day and I was buzzing by the end of it. Didn't want to stop. A real natural high. I was 18 I think.

Down hill ever since.

Road: 254 full fat, Imperial miles London-Paris - midnight from Trafalgar Square, Arc de Triomphe 23:00 Paris time (so 22:00 UK time).

Off road: Kielder last year, 100 miles (although by all accounts it was a tad more!).

Got the Ride Across Britain starting next Saturday, 953 miles in 9 days, desperately unfit - eek!
