Good question. I have no idea 🙂
I have to hold up my hand and say that I was absolutely spitting nails when Lineen was ousted, especially at the way it was done. I was royally pissed off because the attack coach from a national team that had scored 2 tries in 6 games had just been parachuted into the top job at my team seemingly for the sole reason that he was chummy with the old boy network at Murrayfield. The pre-season games didn’t do much to make me feel better.
But then things improved and continue to improve. I don’t think it was one factor but maybe a combination of things like a generation of young players such as Hogg, Murchie, and Harley coming on the scene, the ‘new coach syndrome’ that always seems to lift the performance of a team at least in the short term, and some clever foreign signings like Matawalu, Straus, and Maitland. Also, I think he was inheriting a team that had very good foundations thanks to Lineen.
Or maybe it’s all just been blind luck and we’re about to come crashing down. This being a Scottish team I’m definitely not discounting that possibility.
Why was Townsend seemingly so ineffective for Scotland and so effective for Glasgow? Maybe he was stifled under Robinson or maybe he just got really lucky at Glasgow. I now think that he is a good coach and I’m hoping for big things.

Can’t wait for Ulster v Glasgow on Friday 🙂
