Ive been trying to sell my 5 spot as a whole bike or frame only for quite a while now and Ive had no bites.

Now I know people are going to say “it over priced etc” but Ive tried to price it in line or lower than any others Ive seen but Im still not getting any bites?

Do you think its because of the colour I had it coated in (kawasaki Green) or is it because its an XL size frame?

    Or is it something else?

looking for honest opinions here, this isnt a post to promote my classifieds ad.

    Thanks

    Steve

Personally think the colour is shocking mate.

Plus, the size is a little specialised.

    Ok thanks

I guess most people do not realise that a xl turner comes up more like a large in anything else(i have put this in my ads)

I thought people like the green colours on a bike?

Did you sell yours by the way ??

You say the pics don’t do it justice, so it might be worth trying to take some that do. I’m no expert, but some people manage to get pictures that make a frame look great and others (like me) don’t.

26er baggage – Like it or not, I’m sure it’s already a big deal. Any buyer will be expecting a BIG bargain for buying an “obsolete” format. The speed of the “industry’s” transition away from 26ers is likely to put off loads of people completely

(also, in a time of bigger wheeled bikes (esp 29er), 26 inch wheels are also at their oddest-looking when on a L/XL bike)

I have a 26 inch bike and I like it. Lucky me, as there’s not much chance of me making decent money by selling it

    Sorry

If it were mine I’d stick it on eBay. I’ve sold parts, bikes and frames on there for the money I was after by putting them on at 99p start. Like yourself this was after trying to sell with no success on classifieds.

    Cheers roverpig.

I dont know why but it seems to be a pain to photo correctly to show the actual colour of the frame.

Ive tried various cameras(even a proper slr) and it looks a different shade each time

he fact that it’s been recoated might put it off, people might be worried what that hides. I have a recoated frame that I am intending selling and in looking at pricing it I’ve seen a number of threads/postings where people have said that would put them off.
Also xl is going to be a relatively small pool of potential buyers too.
Are you advertising it to a big enough audience, if it’s just on here there might not be any giant people who like green but if you stick it on eBay that might be someone’s dream bike. The anyalogy I like from an article on selling cars is do you remember those harlequin polos VW did for a while, 99% of people looking for polos would be put off by the colour but the advent of eBay or auto trader allowed the seller to find the people who actually willing to pay a premium.

Im actually looking at buying another 26″ wheeled frame but with a tapered headtube on it!

Do you have the ral number of the colour? People can at least look it up.

You need to find a bloody tall person looking for a bike in a not so nice colour and 26 inch. Not so many of those around.
Maybe drop the price a bit.

I guess people are put off by the fact its a xl but the sizing is ideal for anyone between 6 foot and 6 foot 4 so hardly giants!

its on quite a few boards, Im reluctant to use ebay(although the full bike was on there a few days back) as ive seen to many people getting ripped off by buyers claiming stuff isnt arriving etc!

    Any respray de-values.

Folk may not know/believe an “XL is actually like an L”.

Old stuff is criminally undervalued IMO, which is I guess down to folk buying new stuff and price-cutting.

I really like the colour, but this:

Im actually looking at buying another 26″ wheeled frame but with a tapered headtube on it!

Sums it up. Straight head tubes are a pain these days. So you’ve got:

    – small wheels
    – virtually impossible to buy forks
    – divisive colour
    – big frame

That’s a **** small target audience. Get it on eBay I say!

If you’ve advertised it as well as you can (good description/photos/placement in the right places) then you have two choices:

    1) Lower the price
    2) Wait

I was recently selling a pretty rare guitar that were getting high prices. I had quite a few people offering less than the asking price (I put it at the top money others had sold on eBay). However I wasn’t in a rush to sell it as it was a nice guitar I enjoyed playing.
It took about 12 months, but I eventually got what I wanted for it (enough to buy a Horsethief!)

Am I better off just riding it until it breaks?

If you enjoy riding it keep it.
    Otherwise it’s an expensive ornament.

Yes, or turner will give you 600 dollars of a new frame in exchange. They may let you cut it up and email photos of it rather than send the frame back.

I was thinking about trading my medium flux in for a burner like that, as I have a large 26 flux and the new flux isn’t different enough to be worth building one up.

Or maybe a czar, but I still am not really feeling plastic bikes…

Or find someone who wants a new turner frame and get them the discount in exchange for some cash. Sell the forks and get the wheels rebuilt to bigger rims.

Crazy isn’t it how kit depreciates because the industry bring out new kit.

This frame got really good reviews when new and now it’s not worth anything!

I think it is the price. I’m thinking of selling my 2011 xl 5-spot frame soon but would be asking a max of £400 for the reasons above. I like your “green” but would be a little put off by a respray.

So what do you think it’s worth then people?

    riddoch
    Full Member

about half of whatever value you think is perfectly reasonable 😀

The voice of someone who tends to pay what’s asked or offers what cash he has, then sells again in the hope of at least getting some cash back but is always disappointed.

It’s worth what someone will pay. You have a range of options. IMO this forum isn’t the place to sell for good money. It’s great for a quick sale and convenience, but everyone expects a bargain.

I’d put it on eBay, list at a price you’re happy with, you may only get one bid, but it’ll be one you’re happy with.

Or, put it on at 99p, and you’ll get an idea of its true worth.

I thought my price was fair compared to others I’ve seen?

For instance there are 2011 frames on the classifieds for 750 and 850?

…and are they selling, are they resprayed, are they XL?

    What nick said.

I keep looking at your advert to see if the price has dropped as im in the market for a Bargain 5inch and your relitively local

How ever a few things put me off yours , the main thing is the powder coat. Id rather be able to see the frames life than a fresh powder coat especially on an old frame of that age….

You’re always going to have difficulties shifting a frame that big as most guys looking for an XL frame have been tricked into believing they should be on a 29er.

    And they aren’t selling either….
I was going to make you an offer way back when but thought it might be a bit big; XL has a 32″ standover and Turner recommend it for riders 6’2″ to 6’4″.
At 6’1″ I might have risked it for half what you were asking but then you went and resprayed it…

Reuban thats about where i figured it as well , plenty of similar age santa cruz 125 mm 26ers and even early 5s( which hold teir money like volkswagens it seems) in original livery in big sizes have come and gone for even less than half the price of the turner.

I can only agree, 2nd hand values seem to have dropped through the floor… I’ve a couple of frame I need to shift (to make space for another!) & their value seems ridiculously low, especially when you factor in paypal fee’s and P&P cost (insured). I was looking at selling one last year and the buyer was put off by the scratches on the paint work (Purely from XC use, not bashed about).. so you can’t even win by keeping them original (unpainted)…

I’m actually quite surprised as when I clicked on your ad for the frame I was expecting to see £600+ going on what the others are on for but its £475 which I think is pretty reasonable price. I also like the colour…looks good.

With this in mind, I’d leave the price quite close to what it is and try to advertise to a wider audience, maybe ebay.

Also I’d explain in my ad why it was re-sprayed or put some pre-respray frame photos as if I was buying I’d want to know why you had the re-spray done (and even who by so I’d know it was done professionally)

Certainly makes the other 5Spot on for £750 look overpriced imo

Agree £475 doesn’t seem overpriced. Just the size and the respray putting people off. Can’t see how you wont get close to that on ebay.

I dont see why a respray affects anything at all.

Ebay. On here theres two camps: old school/SS and fashion bikers.

    Sadly your bike is neither.

Also it’s not clear if you include the shock or not?

It includes the shock of course.

I also have pics of it just before I sent it off for powder coating. It really wasn’t in bad condition at all I just wanted to get it done.

So are you saying it’s really only worth half of what I am asking for it?

If so how can it be worth less than a run of the mill older specialised stumpjumper or enduro etc

I think the green looks great.
I’ve had a few good looks at your ad and would have made you an offer if I wasn’t quite as skint as I am right now…
