  • What phone for someone who is not really in to phones ?
  • Bit of a phone numpty here, I haven’t kept up with things at all, but I’ve decided it’s time I moved in to the age of mobile internet.

Looking at a new contract, £7.50 a month for 260 mins/5000 texts/500Mb on Tesco looks about the cheapest SIM only deal.

For only £2.50 more, I could get a brand new HTC Wildfire, that’s only £60 over 24 months. They go for more than that second hand on Ebay.

Does that look like a good deal ?

FOr £7.50 a month you can get a phone as well from talkmobile

Those contracts have quite low data amounts, if you start getting into mobile email, web browsing, apps etc you could exceed that. If you do go that route make sure you keep an eye on it and/or use WiFi hotspots as much as possible (you can turn mobile network data off at anytime and go WiFI only).

The big win for you will be getting onto a smart phone, make sure you get one with a GPS chip as they are useful for biking, then the mobile email and browsing they will all have. It may take a while for you to start using the phone as a “mobile computing device” but once you do I’d suggest you’ll wonder how you lived without it.

i ve so far bought three of the galaxys at 7.50 a month.. the only downside is battery life is only about 24 hrs the mrs who is totally not a phone person.. even the tv horrifys her..is using hers.. tinternet is not something we use via a phone so its all gravy.. why pay the same for just a sim when you can keep up with the yoof for the same..

Thanks for that link, nbt. I’d missed that when I was searching for cheap deals.
Looks like the free phone choice is limited to Samsung Galaxy Ace, LG Optimus L3 or Sony Experia Typo.
I really don’t know much about phones. Are they good enough, or will I end up wishing I’d paid £60 for a Wildfire or an extra £5 a month again (£120 over 24 months) for a Desire or Blackberry ?

…you’ll wonder how you lived without it.

    A bit like the internet ? 😀
I can only think of a couple of times in my life when I’ve wanted mobile internet. Trying to find an LPG station to fill up my Land Rover 200 miles from home, or checking word legality while playing Scrabble in hospital.
I’m sure, once I’ve got it, I’ll find a few more uses.

I wouldn’t bother with a smart phone. I bought a Galaxy in the summer and very quickly got thoroughly pi55ed off with daily charging and not being able to go away overnight without worrying about the battery dying.

I bought a £15 bum-basic Samsung to take on holiday and haven’t touched the Galaxy since. On the £15 phone I can speak to people and send texts and the battery lasts all week. Mobile internet is slooooooooow compared to broadband and trying to see most web pages through a small screen is like trying to look at the Grand Canyon through a porthole.
