I'm a Site Operator on a Bulk Fuel Storage Depot for a Govt Dept based in Whitehall. Rural location and work in and outdoors and shifts, not an unpleasant way to earn a crust.

Love this job description. Got visions of some bloke making power drill noises as he moves his arms slowly towards a wall.

A one-time marine biologist, I now spend most of my time getting people to talk with each other so they make better (less bad? good?) decisions.

Most of the time, great fun. Not so fun when doing stoopid workloads due to inability of clients to see that a quinquennial cycle comes around, oooh, about... every - five - freakin' - years - surprise!!

Yes PhilC people on here seem to be in IT, engineering or NHS! I'm a family support worker, I work with children in care for an Independent Fostering agency. Looking to study to be a social worker. Used to manage a record label, so an interesting career change for me - I can recommend them!

Graphic Designer, Web Designer, Brand and Marketing Consultant, general purveyor of new trousers for Emperors. Bit of video work, photography and copywriting thrown in too. Really varied, really enjoy it, pay is quite good.

I appreciate I'm going to end up on the 'B' ark, but I can always fall back on my Computer Science degree and maybe solve some of the world's real problems again...

I recruit NHS staff, and also dismiss NHS staff. I'm very busy dismissing NHS staff at the moment. Mostly the rubbish ones who can't come to work because they are 'ill' and the ones that are just plain rubbish at their jobs.....in a small way i'm helping my Trust to save £47,000,000 in budget cuts.

Its the companies software own, the main model is a mix of FORTRAN and C++ then some other stuff written in VB that some other developers deal with. I'm newish so only just getting to grips with it myself. Just been customising the some software for some clients. Even thought the model is largely written every operators rig operates slightly different with slightly different requirements.

I'm an applied mathematician, the other modellers are engineers or physicists. Pay is not the great tbh but prob just the firm I'm working for. Probably a bit different if you were working for an oil company as a reservoir engineer.

in the colder, rainy months (although it hasn't rained here in Munich for six weeks now) i work as a carpenter knocking together sets for large events and/or trade fairs in far off cities; last month Copenhagen, last week Milan and Vienna, this week Vienna again, week after next Stuttgart, Düsseldorf and then back home in Munich.

in the summer months i work as a bike guide and luggage driver. one week riding my bike with a group, the next after driving a van for 2-3 hours and then hitting the hills on my own for 4-6 hours. it doesn't pay as well as the chippying, but it takes me to some fantastic spots and the van driving is like being on holiday most of the time.

the two compliment each other nicely as the events and trade fairs trail off towards summer and start again around september time just as the (holiday) biking season comes to a close.

life is ok.

I work well over 90 hours per week in the medical profession.
Apparently that makes me innefficient and unbalanced going on recent posts around here.
I have a beautiful girlfriend 15 years younger than me and ride trails when I want which is my passion.
I'm happier than most people I know despite my shortfalls.

Airline Captain but the job bears zero resemblance to the public's perception of it! I don't earn megabucks, work insane hours and am treated like dirt by my airline (standard) but it does allow me to live in northern Scotland and ride my bike several times a week. So on balance it was worth the 10 years of financial and emotional misery.
Would I recommend it to you.............NO!

An awesome job all the same.

You know those massive IT cock-up projects that squander millions of public pounds? I work on those.

Actually that's not really fair, I've worked on one that was actually a success eventually, and one that was terrible and I am expecting to hit the news at some point.

MrsT was involved with a project along those lines. She came into it late and was advising at the time that what they were trying to do would and could not work. It finally hit the headlines 🙄
