Does anyone know how far on they are with the xc trail at wharncliffe it was 2 years ago when i last went!!

It’s a bit like Morcambe and Wise, all the bits are there but not neccesarily in the right order, it starts well enough but runs out of steam when you get to the downhill courses area and as for waymarking, I think the locals use them for firelighters. Also suffers from motocrossers damage.

I was there on friday. The old XC route that starts from the top car park still starts from the top car park- nice new signs and all, but that is about all! As pistonbroke says it kind of peters out. I followed something that looked interesting that just ended up in brambles and mud. The DH tracks are still there and you can’t miss them. The main one that starts with a big rocky drop in has some bits of red and white tape on trees marking it out.
For Xc the best bet is to head away from sheffield towards the crags area. that was lovely on friday afternoon. the top section near the car park was still very wet in places but I guess it will be a bit better now.

It used to be my local riding area for a couple of years and to be honest I never really put together a good loop. There are some nice sections scattered about on both sides of the road but they dont marry up in to anything that great.

    “Also suffers from motocrossers damage.”

I’ve seen quad bikes up there quite a bit but also some on trials bikes. Unless I am very much mistaken it could have been some one quite famous to those parts, and his bike was doing a nice bit of damage close to the start of the XC section.

shame thought they were gonna make about 10k of trails i bet they ran out of funding

We never had any funding in the first place, it was all done by volunteers with no backing. After lots of obstruction from the FC and the ranger we all got pretty fed up of it all and motivation was extinguished. That and the fact that what we were trying to build was just not possible to do in a sustainable and weather proof way with no money and no machinery so it all got pretty trashed.

Shame as it could have been good

the cheeky cheeky stuff is good there if you can find it.

ive been scouring that place the past few months to make it some kind of xc ride which does work,be it at the end throwin in no human, and then a bit of paths on other side back to car park.

love the craggs end of the place.

At one end of the scale you have the land manager at Gisburn who will bend over backwards. At the other end you have Wharncliffe.

As for the signage, it’s mystifying!

Head over to Singletraction and check out the latest Wharncliffe thread.

And if you want to throw your weight behind trail development and bridleways round there then look up Ride Sheffield on Facebook

I’m off there this eve and I’m always happy to show people the full red xc. took me about 4 goes to find every thing but I’m sure I have it covered now.

i prefer it as it is,without putting all the trail centre type stuff in it.

I’d like to see a new bit of singletrack running alongside the fire road at the bottom. otherwise I agree, its good as it is.

Plenty of ‘XC’ stuff at Wharncliffe without a marked trail – jsut go and explore.

I’d like to see a new bit of singletrack running alongside the fire road at the bottom

if it ran above the “fire road” for the sections below the downhills and avoided the dh stuff exiting onto the plank gate fire road that would make just too much sense and is the sort of forward thinking that would reduce potential for conflict [edit} and is therefore impossible

the downhills exit on the fire road so you couldn’t avoid them

    eats shoots and leaves…

what i meant to say was if a nice little bit of singletrack ran above the fireroad it could remove (avoid) the problem of dh’ers exiting at caffiene induced warp speed on to the walkers and horseriders delight that is a wide gravel track ok a few xc riders with ipod amnesia might suffer but a price worth paying – some more interesting riding and aproblem fixed
