Just been browsing Oxfam’s online store for 70’s vinyl records.

They’re selling ‘Deep Purple in Rock’ for £50 and, wait for it, ‘In the Court of the Crimson King’ for £250. 😯

    Edit: fleabay looks considerably cheaper!

Oxfam have lost the plot when it comes to pricing vinyl. Utterly oddball. I buy tons of records from charity shops, but generally give Oxfam a swerve.

I suppose it’s a bit like buying a left-handed guitar or a car converted into a van. When you’re buying one, it’s massively more expensive because it’s unusual; when you’re selling, it’s worthless because it’s unusual.

For many years I’ve been going to a very well priced local SH vinyl place but even his prices have increased massively over the last year or two. Limited supply is driving prices through the roof.

I thought that, maybe, I would become a millionairess by selling them!

It was suggested to me that I should sell my Paranoid single given that Sabbath have been touring again but I don’t think I could part with any of my old vinyl, it’s part of me 8)

I used to say that psling, need to de-clutter and let’s not talk about the CDs!

I do have some BS vinyl albums I would sell. 😀

    That’s insane

Take a look at Discogs – seem to be plenty of copies of both on there for a far more reasonable price

edit – oh, I see you’re selling rather than buying

And cassettes! At least I have a deck, I don’t even have a casette player these days.

Know what you mean about de-cluttering, but it’s not easy and I’ve regretted being ruthless in the past.

Also have my late father’s jazz albums.

For a very long time I would never part with the vinyl but feel OK about it now. There’s only a few artists that I still listen to such as Van Morrison and Neil Young but have those albums on CD anyway.

I know of a shop in Surrey, I’ll pop in and ask. If nothing else they’ll be able to tell by my wrinkles that I’m the original owner. 😆

I was talking about this to my bro the other day, we both have big vinyl collections – now you see those records in the shops for those prices, but you won’t see anyone buying them for those prices!
There’s a shop near me with Electric Ladyland, original “naughty” sleeve etc – again £250.. never gonna happen. People just don’t need to pay that much for vinyl, so they don’t. Whatever Record Collector/Valuer mag or site they got those prices from is just wrong.

Hi Dez. You won’t part with yours I guess? Certainly the prices on Discog are an eye-opener!

me too. lots of UK first editions from the 60’s. very, very hard to get rid of for decent money…

My Brother in Law has some rare vinyl, but he had a record shop & trawled the UK doing record fairs many years ago. His most treasured possession is a blue vinyl Bohemian Rhapsody that was reckoned to be worth £5k at one time.
He had two copies at one time. 😯

Vinyl prices in high street shops and big chain stores have been on the increase but Discogs is a goldmine and has reasonably sane prices.

Now, if I could just find a good cond. Planar 3 to replace my dead record player somewhere other than Ebay I´d be happy.

Get an RP3 – thats the modern day equivalent – better in every aspect

Because they are probably not as rare as you think!

Think some people believe that ALL vinyl from the 60s & 70s is worth a fortune – yes some is especially short-run 1st pressings & mono Beatles pressings etc

I just have to laugh at some of the prices some of these charity shops are trying to charge – yes I know vinyl is getting popular again but there are bargains to be had if your thorough in your search.

It pains me to see Smiths LPs for over £30 on ebay, you can find them less than a tenner, or better still buy the reissues for less than £20

    Thanks for the replies. 🙂

Are imports likely to command 50p more? Got a couple of those.

There’s probably one that I’ll keep, mainly cos I was in the audience at the Royal Festival Hall to hear something special. Journey to the Centre of the Earth by Rick Wakeman. Nothing like that had been done before, it was ground-breaking stuff. 8)

Even new vinyl is silly money. £20+ for a single album? I think not.

It’s the variation in price of new vinyl I can’t understand. Some are £12 and some are £25!

Second hand vinyl is only worth anything to serious collectors and these guys will only buy stuff that’s totally mint….and I mean mint. I have loads of fairly rare stuff with some amazing covers but the odd dog ear and the fact these have been played makes them pretty much worthless on the market.

I cleared out a box of about 80 mostly early 90s indie 12″ singles recently. Took them to my local vinyl place expecting to get a trade in for a CD at best or be told to carry on to Oxfam. They offered me £100! Great result. Still have another box of better/rarer stuff but have a feeling I missed something special in the first box. I’d never have realised its value so still pleased.

Oi hammy! This year is the 40th anniversary of the release of that album which was recorded in 1974 live.

In my mind I’m still a teenager with my music. My body however says differently. 😐

its a niche market – what do you expect?

I priced my vinyl collection on Discogs a few weeks ago. I’ve got a few coloured vinyls and a few albums I paid silly money for which were worth around £25. The album that turned out to be worth the most was something obscure by Einsturzende Neubauten or Wolfgang Press or someone totally unexpected, worth about £40. I’ve only retained one 7″ which was the first Skeletal Family single the band sold in local pubs out of carrier bags, they’re selling on Discogs for around £50.
For that sort of money on a handful of vinyl from a biggish collection, I don’t think I could be arsed selling them.

I refuse to say anything on the grounds that anything I say may incriminate me…… 😉

I have been collecting and playing reggae for over thirty years, we saw the reggae market in daft a few years ago -it has settled a bit now but still see crazy prices for some really poor music -the content is secondary the ‘label’!

    I’d never have guessed… 😉
Very much like the insane prices payed by collectors for really obscure Northern Soul singles; there’s generally a reason why they’re obscure…

Interesting thread this, thanks for bringing it up.
I have a box of probably about 100 vinyl albums from the early 80’s, mostly heavy metal type stuff like UFO, Iron Maiden, Zeppelin, Whitesnake etc. etc.
I’ve recently been thinking about trying to sell them all if it were worth the bother, what do you all think ?
By the time I’ve catalogued it all and then sold them one by one (I guess) with postage etc. I imagine that it would be more effort than it would be worth.
Unless I could sell it as a job lot perhaps.
What do we think ? worth the aggro ?

I think the problem is that only those in excellent condition will sell.

Weird! Couple of hours ago I was listening to my ancient ‘The Rolling Stones’ LP I bought way back in 1964. It’s the mono version and, considering it’s 50yrs old, in quite decent nick.

Hadn’t realised secondhand prices were so high.

Have you got a vinyl shop near you? I used Record Collector in Sheffield – just dropped a big box off and said make me an offer. I was prepared to be disappointed and ended up chuffed. No hassle at all.

I may have overlooked one of two gems and selling individually could have grossed a lot more but considering time, effort, postage etc it really wasn’t worth it.

It felt like a big decision but with a 1yr old in the house I’ll not be playing vinyl for years – and I kept over half my collection. I put the money from the vinyl towards some Sonos kit and couldn’t be happier with the digital streaming revelation!
