OK. After numerous rear wheel flats, my Ignitor rear tyre on my singlespeed has now split and this seems an ideal time to avoid further punctures and wheel removal faffs and convert it to tubeless.

But I’m struggling how to go about it.

It’s a big rim with a braking surface, no idea of size / make (it was bought off here) but is true. It’s not UST-specific, I’m pretty certain (it’s too old!) Can I use it with Stan’s, or do I need to have the wheel rebuilt with a UST specific rim (which probably isn’t worth doing for me)?

Whate else do I need? A rim tape; 3/8″ drill; some solution; do I need replacement valve core? Anything else?

Tyre – do I need a UST-specific tyre or will an “ordinary” one do? (Need to replace it with something fast rolling but which won’t split with a big biffa like me on it – any suggestions there?)

Sorry the above is basic stuff, but I’m mystified by the tubeless talk on here.

    Ghetto Tubeless

Have a look on youtube for vids too, should be less than £10 per wheel.

Ghetto’d my hardtail over the weekend. Very easy although I did have to use CO2 cartridges to initially inflate.

UST is one way of doing tubeless.

Stan’s, eclipse, or ghetto are another (basically the same)

UST are like car tyres – special rim, special tyre designed to keep the air in. Tyres tend to be very heavy tho but some think it’s easier.

Stans etc use sealant (goo) to stop air leaking out. Lighter, cheaper, you can use your existing stuff and the sealant also stops punctures (most of them anyway).

I vote for the latter, although it works better with some tyres than others.
