Can Ukraine have a ‘Nazi problem’ with a Jewish president?
The thing with the claims about NAZIs is that it taps into Russian mythology about WW2. Russia suffered terribly in WW2 and beating the NAZIs is a rallying point for nationalists to distract from what a disastrous leader Stalin was. In this case, NAZIs doesn’t literally mean NAZIs, it’s just code for enemies of Russia. It’s like how right-wing Americans denounce socialists and communists. The people they’re talking about aren’t actually socialists (even the ones who think they are socialists are not really socialists), it’s just a term they use to rally their side against their enemies. Labelling Moslems as “Islamic terrorists” does the same thing.
singletrackmindFull MemberI have yet to see a proper artillery barrage being used against a tank column
What i suspect is being done is the drones are being used as a fac and getting the route fed back to the ground assault troops. They then get to an ambush point, and use a missile or rpgs to destroy a single vehicle with little to no collateral damage

There are some if you look around on Twitter, etc. Utterly brutal.
relapsed_mandalorianFull MemberIt works though, although it doesn’t give you crosshairs on a screen to ID a position like some more purpose built ISTAR kit does, you could position the drone directly above your lead target vehicle & the rear plot on your map and work out the bearing line they’re fixed along and away you go.
It’s a slight modification of how you’d use something like a Desert Hawk or more specialist bit of kit to give you a grid.
Off the shelf kit is pretty damn good and with a bit of imagination, as we’re seeing in this conflict, pretty damn effective.
Some of the anti-regime groups in Syria were fitting explosive devices and flying them over airbase fences and into the control surfaces of Russian jets parked up.

Well yes, but another way of looking at it is that we can prevent fighting by instead turning economic screws. The power of economic sanctions, social media warfare and brands pulling out of Russia appears to be huge.
Obviously, there are some very valid concerns about how much power corporations have.

The USA are equally as guilty – everything Republicans think is bad is “socialism”. It’s basically a Bogeyman.
slowoldmanFull MemberDon’t know about TV and FM but BBC World Service are broadcasting on SW.

The major problem in the U.S. is that the Republican Party has drifted into this for decades and is now the Trumpist party. Don’t lump the majority of Americans who rejected that in with the Trumpist wingnuts.
doris5000Free Member“Can Ukraine have a ‘Nazi problem’ with a Jewish president?”
USA had a racism and white supremacy problem with a black president.
It certainly did. But it’s funny to see it flipped around like that – if we imagine an attempt to fix the USA’s racism problem by trying to invade the country, assassinate the president and install a puppet government, it gives the lie to Putin’s ludicrous bullshit about ‘denazification’.
relapsed_mandalorianFull MemberHere’s a link to footage of a KA-52, part they way through it gets engaged and damaged, forcing the pilots to land.
Gives an aviation perspective of the terrain. It’s SFW, but the AC is engaging targets throughout.
molgripsFree MemberAll the people leaving the Moscow rally early – is that an attempt by anti-war types to leave the stadium embarrassingly empty?
I thought maybe they had been paid to attend, just wanted to get their ticket punched for the money but didn’t care to stay for the actual event.

Yeah, I was thinking that as I typed it. At least Republicans only represent ~50%* of the USA. I suppose one unexpected ‘benefit’ of the extreme partisan nature of the USA at the moment, is that if one half of the country believes one thing, you can guarantee that the other half will think the opposite.
Whereas in Russia, I suspect most of the population just accepts the Nazi-fearing jingoist propaganda since there’s no real opposition party.
(*I’m aware this is debatable, but let’s not do that here)

Yeah, it was obvious what you meant. Just a clumsy way to put it.
thols2Full MemberMany said they worked in the public sector (e.g. schoolteachers), and that they had been pressured into attending by their employers. One group of teachers, from a town near Moscow, were being told what to say to us by a woman who appeared to be from the local administration.

In comparison to opposition rallies, most people didn't want to talk, be filmed or answer any questions. Some would cover their faces or put up their hoods when we said we are journalists. Many seemed embarrassed or ashamed to be there.

There were doubtless some people in attendance who genuinely support President Putin and the "special military operation in Ukraine", as the Kremlin prefers to call it.

pk13Full MemberWhat’s more telling? Putin having a Trump style rally with a Z on thier lapels while people telling the BBC off the record they where made to go or tricked (that Z is getting to look like a symbol that got hijacked in the 40s)
Meanwhile it’s Biden taking to Xi Ping.
China starting to report the news with a degree of honesty.
If Putin gets someone to design a snappy black uniform it would not surprise me.timbog160Free MemberLooks like Mariupol may fall soon. Interesting looking at Russian coverage of this, saying their troops are ‘rescuing’ civilians who the nazis forced to hide in cellars.
Not clear how much this will change the overall position but it will give the Russians their much talked about ‘land bridge’ along the Black Sea coast.
blokeuptheroadFull MemberThis is awesome! They must be absolutely raging in there!

mattyfezFull Membermy specatcles are hugo boss branded, does that mean i’m the bad guy?
I got them from spec savers.
slowoldmanFull MemberThe only settlement that Ukraine will be interested in is all Russian troops out of Ukraine, including Crimea.
I’m not so sure. Although I would love to see Putin’s arse handed to him on a plate, Zelenskyy isn’t such a maniac and I imagine would be keen to end the destruction of Ukraine and the continuing loss of Ukrainian lives.
PoopscoopFull MemberI fear Crimea and a land corridor to it is lost to Ukraine now.
The best they can hope for now is a compromise to get the Russians out of the country, to stay a democracy and aim to be an EU member as soon as practicable.
Hopefully whilst all this is going on Putin f**** off this mortal coil.
singletrackmindFull MemberCan someone watch this video please
With the sound up from 45 seconds to 55 seconds.
Just confirm what i think i am hearing is actually being relayed to the mortar crew.
Hmmmm?CaherFull MemberWhatever happens I hope the sanctions remain until Putin is ousted.
ernielynchFull MemberIn this case, NAZIs doesn’t literally mean NAZIs,
I believe the correct term is neo-Nazi as they obviously not exactly the same as the German Nazis of 80 years ago. But otherwise there is not much fundamental difference.
https://forward.com/opinion/416751/why-does-no-one-care-that-neo-nazis-are-gaining-power-in-ukraine/
Jujuuk68Free MemberI’d not be surprised, because I think I recognise the mortar firing clip from something I saw earlier today, of an ex sniper and combat medic from Princess of Wales Regiment who’s gone out there to train Ukranian Territorials in field medicine. He was claiming to have trained 500 people over the last 4-5 days with another 300 more by the end of the week.
PoopscoopFull MemberI feel context is needed. No country is immune from the rise of Neo Nazi’s. Let’s not pretend this is the real reason for the invasion.
We banned our fifth “group” last year in the UK.
Ukraine isn’t some special haven for the rise of the far right nationalists.

China will welcome him with open arms but I wonder what is there to exchange/negotiate in order to convince the CCP.
China starting to report the news with a degree of honesty.
What news is that?
thols2Full MemberSerious question — how often are generals killed in action by the adversary in modern warfare?
— Preet Bharara (@PreetBharara) March 18, 2022
theotherjonvFree Member^ very good.
I’m just watching the news, and of course above all there’s the cost in human lives, lost, disrupted and displaced. Then there’s the cost to civilians of the countries directly involved with the sanctions biting, etc. The cost to the economies of the country just caused by the cost of the war. And the cost to us all as a result of the oil prices, etc.
But when I see pictures of Mariupol, I just can’t get my head round the scale of a rebuild. The place is devastated, there’s barely a building left. A city of 430K people, that’s the size of Bristol give or take. How do you even start rebuilding, even before you consider some buildings of historic importance that can never be rebuilt. How can anyone afford that?

Germany did it after WWII.
Have a look on YT at old video footage of bombed out German cities in the late 40’sMoreCashThanDashFull MemberHow do you even start rebuilding, even before you consider some buildings of historic importance that can never be rebuilt. How can anyone afford that?
We’ve managed it before. Not a quick or easy process, but it will get done. Those of us not directly impacted by the devastation or the refugee crisis will be helping pay for it for a couple of generations to come. Think of it as the price of freedom. If you think that is causing you some economic pain, be grateful you aren’t Ukranian.
Edit – that’s general “you”, not aimed at the poster.
thestabiliserFree MemberWest Germany / Berlin, yes, eventually. Soviet controlled Germany / Berlin, less so
theotherjonvFree MemberNo no, I get that ‘we’ can, and we did in the past, and I’m not moaning about the cost (other than the fact that it’s so senseless and I can’t imagine why we’re doing it after all the learning of the past – whether UKR, Syria, Iraq, I’m non-denominational) – it is what it is and a hit to our pockets is nothing in comparison.
I just can’t get my head round the how. That’s the point. Where do you find so many brickies, plasterers, materials…… like quantum physics, it’s just out of my understanding.
