I’m after some tyres for the bike park: I am looking at Maxxis Minion 2.5 super tacky dual plys (front tread for both rear and front), and was wondering if anyone has seen any deals around?

    Any other suggestions?

buy your tyres before you go out there…otherwise it could get expensive.

high rollers did the trick for me.

That’s what I’m intending to do: Hence why I was asking if anyone had seen any deals about.

I’ll probably use high rollers for the xc stuff, but was thought, for some reason that Minions may be better for the park.

Here’s one thing to think about – tyres are heavy and while they may be more expensive in Whistler, you may end up paying for their weight at the airport.

In the Alps, they crucify you on the price of tyres because they know you’re a captive market – you can’t ride without them. BUT, given the weak value of the pound, they MAY still work out cheaper in Whistler than here.

The Super Tacky’s will last you a week of hard riding at most. 60 durometer will be less grippy, especially in the wet, but may be more sensible if you only want to lug one pair with you.

Funnily enough, that thought had crossed my mind as well. It’s certainly a consideration.

It shouldn’t be too hard to find out how much tyres cost in Whister:

High Rollers FTW. Tyres and pads are silly expensive out there, so take as many as you can. According to a mate, Maxxis tyres are about $100 a pop out there, thats around £50ish!

I just used Minion 2.5 ST’s last year for two weeks, in fact they are still on the bike with plenty tread. Certainly didn’t go through them in a week and we were riding everyday bar one.

Skids are for kids! I used a 2.7 Slow Reezay Minnion on the front from late 2007 in the Park and I’ve still got it now. Granted it never got used every day but tyres last OK there if you are not too hamfisted with the brakes. I’d go with the softest / biggest tyres you can get and screw the weight.

2.3 Super tacky single ply Rollers with fairly beefy tubes would be my bet for XC, although I used Specialized Chunders which were heavier but lasted a whole season. Only use 60a compound tyres on the front if you are feeling suicidal.

2.5 Minnions Fr & Rr, ST front, 60a rear if you intend riding upper Garbanzo.

A ST rear will be ok if you stick to the lower whistler slopes, but the rock ‘up top’ shreds ST rears.

Now if you have some £, the 3C’s are the baby’s to have.

Thanks folks. XC stuff I know what I am doing as far as tyres go, but the bike park is still to be sorted.

When I went there a couple of years ago I came off the trail on the first corner of the first run due in no small part to the tyres not being up to the job.

I got down the hill and went straight to one of the closest shops and started browsing the tyre rack. After 10 minutes or so of deliberating (the tyres were priced between $60 & $85 each) I asked the guy in the shop for a recommendation:

Maxxis Minion 2.5 TripleC front and Maxxis High Roller TripleC rear. They cost me $85 each and I then spent another $50 on good quality DH tubes and the taxes on top. One corner and I’m $220 down….

However, they are the single most impressive ‘component’ I’ve ever bought for a bike. The difference was astonishing – those buggers never stepped out once the entire fortnight and gripped like 5hit to a blanket. That investment ‘made’ my entire trip and I rode the park for a fortnight on my hardtail.

…..last time I was there….whipping Walleater with a Lanzi shaped bendy stick…..and giving 100mphplus free holidays…..retail Maxxis tyres were around $90 plus tax…..each….they’re about $75 trade over there so that’s the best you can hope for!!

You shouldn’t need DH tubes with dual ply tyres though…..I used to run 2.7 ST Minion Fronts and 2.5 Rr for the Park….infact, everywhere….think I’ve get a set of 3C’s knocking about here too if you want a cheap set….
