Had to sell the Orange 5 earlier this year to meet an unexpected bill (SOB!).

Just acquired a Trek Fuel 100 (well used, paint scratched up here and there) with Manitou Black forks, basic Fox sus unit, XT Crankset, Deore rear shifter, STX front shifter, Thompson seat post, Bontrager headstem and bars.

Mate donated it as it was already a hand-me-down and he’s decided he doesn’t like full suspension.

Going to buy a new rear wheel and upgrade to Avid BB7 disc brakes.

    What thinks the hive?

I think you’ve posted in the wrong forum.

But otherwise – free quality bike – win!

I think that having a bike is great. Much better than not having one.

I have a 1999 Orange hardtail with a basic build. I still riding it. Infact my main MTB is fairly ancient as well (Fuel Ex from 2009). I took that out for a ride after leaving in the shed for a few months. Had me grinning like mad.

I’d only spend money on things that don’t work. What current brakes does it have?

V brakes on the back, Tektro disc on the front. Avid brake levers.

Looking forward to taking it out on an initial feeler ride on Sunday.

Going to cover up the scratches with close-as-possible match nail varnish…

Main pivot bushings were rubbish, the pushed in spacer came loose and ovalised the frame (mine did).
There was an upgrade kit available. Probably worth looking for one.

Had a look in the gift horses mouth. Dave F at my LBS had a good look and the bike turns out to be an absolute dog. By the time I’d had everything put right, I might just as well have bought a new bike. So I gave him some spending credits and next Saturday I’m picking up one of these…
