I went over Salter Fell Road yesterday with my partner, and noticed the shooters track south over Tarnbrook Fell had no sign telling cyclists they couldn’t use it, at least not here at the Northern end of the trail.

<span style=”font-size: 12.8px;”>It looked dry, perfectly surfaced, and really nice and wild for this annoyingly domesticated country (linking it with Salter Fell Road, you could have something like 25km of </span>uninterrupted<span style=”font-size: 12.8px;”> offroad tracks reaching pretty high altitude, like 500m). So I was thinking of heading back, as it’s the perfect ride for us given that she’s only on an 40mm tyre’d adventure bike (I’m becoming increasingly cautious of saying ‘gravel’ bike on here…)</span>

Anyone been up there and had any problems? I figured that if we make sure there’s no actual shooting going on and go at the weekend all should be OK…

They should have called gravel bikes ..hoggin bikes ..which is primarily what the surface they are used on is called .

I’m taking the hog out for a ride has more of a ring to it ! 😁

But if we’re going to be that specific, we have to start calling UK mountain bikes Bog Bikes or something… Not many of us (regularly) ride bikes to 3,000ft… 🙂

Did you ever go on the Tarnbrook tracks? I’ve been thinking of heading up there myself.

The bods on the abbeystead estate don’t take kindly to bikers on the shooters track. Its not bridleway and is normally access land (closed when they are shooting) so fine for the odd run I do up there. Probably fine for a cheeky ride out of hours but expect to be shown to the nearest road if caught.
