Spd Shoes Budget Vs £££

My current spd shoes re on ther way out. Nothing special about them, 3 velco straps replceable front studs.

Cost about £40.

I was looking at replcing them with another smilar pair around the same cost but I also was looking a more expensive shoes Sidi Dominatotype shoes.

The £40 shoes seem to last about 2 years, so my question is do Sii o similar high end shoes last longer?

How often do you ride and in what conditions? Road or mtb?

My shoes are lasting longer than 2 years. Had various ones from shimano mt90 and 91 to Scott heater gortex etc. But I have summer shoes and winter boots which prolongs their life.

Expensive ones don’t seem to last longer in my experience, but tend to be stiffer / fancier closing (boa etc)

I keep looking at the £69 Das Boot for possible 3 season use.

Could actually be 3 years.

Don’t think I’ll bother with ££££ shoes then.

Might get a winter set and summer set.

Riding is going to be CX and road 3 times a week or so.

I’ve got a pair of Specialized road shoes, we’re about £120. They’re completely wrecked after one year of mostly dry road riding.

Go with ones that look robust and have a closing mechanism you like.

I have some 20 year old Sidi shoes that I still wear – I have chucked plenty of pairs of cheaper shoes in the intervening years.

If Shimano shoes fit you well then just pick a pair in their range that you like. I’ve road, flat and SPD shimano shoes and am impressed with them all. I do have to buy them one size bigger though (normally 43 but need 44 in Shimano shoes).

Decathlon is great for cycling shoes.

Those Giro’s look good value.

Always wanted a pair of Sidi but can’t justify the price.

I’ve had 6 years out of my Specalized carbon sole Xc type shoe.

I run Shimano winter boots- must be 10 years old now and Shimano all mountain shoes.

The xc shoes are starting to fall apart.they replaced a set of Specalized shoes where the sole fell off the upper 50 miles into a 120 mile ride. I borrowed some electrical tape and taped them on. This time I’m going to replace them before this 😀

Think I’ll run my current shoes into the ground.

Then put funds towards shoes and may go for middle range.

Although I did try on a pair of Sidis and they were very comfortable.

Those Giro’s look good value.

I bought some of those at the end of last year, they are pretty good, still looking ok after road/mtb & commuting use.

I’ve generally gone with either Specialized or Shimano for shoes in the past but over the last few months bought some cheap Planet-X ones and initial impression on those is fine. No idea how well they’ll last compared to the Specialized and Shimano ones (which were both good).

I just binned a pair of Specialized BG Sport that were about 15 years old and still as good as new. Only binned them as my feet appear to have continued growing and they got too small. Cost £40 new I think.

Sidi shoes are great; they last ages and you can get replacement parts of the soles to make them last even longer. I still doctor them – cut the tongue to suit my foot, cut the heel bone padded bit, notch the achilies slot a little deeper…… Tools, not jewels.

I have an as new pair of Sidi Dragon in size 45 I’m selling if they are of interest to anyone – only worn four times, just not my thing.

£150 if anyone’s interested.

I’ve also got those giros ^ from decathlon and like them. Find them true to size. They’re only a warmer weather shoe mind.

I’m still using some original Spesh BG road shoes from late 90s!

I asked a similar question this year and the general consensus was that other than the fixings you get and possible quality of materials there are no actual quantifiable gains, despite the manufacturer’s wittering on saying otherwise. As a result I still have my POV spec looking £40 specialized shoes and the only reason I’ll replace is that I want boa dials rather than Velcro as I never get the fit quite right and they’re a pain to tweak.

I’ve always bought more expensive shoes.

The giro empire vr90 I’ve had for a long while have been great, really tough.

Also purchased Giro sector with the BOA. And they are fantastic too.

My shoes last a couple of years tops – the outer becomes to slack over time for me.

Expensive shoes have much better materials I find (composite sole, better outer.)

Expensive is really relative though.

My 12(?) year old Spesh BG MTB shoes (probably BG Comp or Sport or something, nothing fancy) annoyingly refuse to die. I’d quite like some new shoes, mainly cos I fancy a different colour and possibly something slightly lighter, but I can’t really justify it when the ones I already have are absolutely fine.

The prices of ‘branded’ shoes are absolutely mental these days though.
