    …..last week’s ‘giving up’ was a bit of a non-starter. Back on today….polos aren’t addictive are they?

Not addictive, but the sugar-free ones can give you the runs 😮

Awesome stuff from the quitters. Well done for being honest with yourself binners 🙂

For those just starting out I found that the money I spent on nicotine gum was an additional insentive, and in someway symbolic of renewed effort and change of mindset.

Binners – think about how many you’ve not smoked over the weekend as you go through the process of quitting rather than the minor slip up.

Also Binners (not forgetting the fact I smoked for a couple of weeks over the festive period), on one of my quitting occasions…

2 days in went and filled up with petrol for the first time since quitting and realised I hadn’t even thought of buying any, ‘cor this quitting lark is easy. I can’t really have been addicted’ I thought to myself. Somehow this turned into justification to stop at the next garage and buy some baccy etc. 😳

Such blips should help you strengthen your resolve. The little B******* nicotine monster in your mind is a cunning little fella.

3 days now for me. Daytimes are not so bad but the evenings are not so good…..and getting to sleep is a pain, and once a sleep I sweat like mad – does this happen to anyone else?

    TheSouthernYeti

The first time I tried to quit had crazy ‘night sweats’, as it’s not heat related I took to wearing T shirt and pj bottoms to bed as they’re easier to change half way through the night than sheets are! 😯

As you’ve made it through 3 days this should start to subside. Keep it up!

….I’m not the only one. Tonight will be a struggle, thursday night is student night and I’ve retained my student habits exceedingly well for the last 10 years.

this thread is actually making a tad easier which is good. Ta for encouragement and good luck to everyone else.

Its not good news folks. I’ve been lapsed a bit. Not smoking during the day, but have been resorting to the odd one in the evening. I can kind of live with this though as its a considerable (actually…. massive) improvement on the Status quo. I’m going to have a last one tonight, then its cold turkey (literally by the sound of the night sweats) from there on in

And… Well done you lot. I feel both impressed and suitably ashamed

    Come on quitters!!

I’ve been struggling this week for some reason but still fighting the temptation. Down to 1mg shweeties now. 🙂

Can’t remember if I’ve mentioned already but go easy on the caffeine whilst quitting. Nicotine effects the way you metabolise caffeine so when you quit all of sudden those black coffees will hit you a lot harder… day sweats!

Keep up the good work people.

Remember that you did not become a smoker overnight, you had one or two, then a few more and this will have happened over a period of time. As a result I reckon it also takes a lot of time to become an ex-smoker and quit because you have a lot of unlearning to do and it will not happen overnight.

Personally I prefer the stick method to the carrot, so sort yourselves out yer pansies and quit like a manly man would!

binners, keep at it but don’t feel like its a mountain. If you really must have one- have one. Then start again with a view to stretching the days without one extra day next time.

It took me ages of failed quiting before I got the hang of it. Its the mindset, as soon as you starting thinking ‘I actually don’t like smoking’ – then your halfway there.

If you still think ‘I really enjoy smoking’- your not ready

So so true. I struggled and failed several times until I reached the thought that I really didn’t want to smoke rather than I shouldn’t smoke because of x,y and z

Once I realised this I gave up overnight… it’s an odd one.

    Agreed.

Hating everything about smoking and disliking myself for smoking made it much easier to stop.

If you’ve fallen off the wagon, don’t worry, give it another go. Have a little think about what caused you to fall off, a bit of stress, habit or boredom and then see if the ciggy actually helped in solving the problem, made you less bored or made the coffee taste any better. Probably not. 😀

A couple of days off the wagon is nothing when you consider what you’re about to gain.

Keep it up chaps and chapesses.

I felt a bit tempted yesterday when I was bored with nothing to do for a few hours. I scoffed about half a pound of quality street instead.
    Not sure which is worse?

    About time I chipped in.

Not had one since the wee small hours of new years day. Never have a problem with not smoking but the true test will come when I go out on the ale at the end of the month.

Beer is just not the same without a tab. 🙁

On the plus side riding is much better without. 😀

    it’s driving me nuts!

It will pass. Beware of when it catches you unaware though – will power is an amazing thing but you will be tested. You have to think of the benefits!

All very AWESOME stuff though from everyone.

Anyone, got any advice on how not to think about having a ciggie?

Bizarre as it is going to sound, you want to go the opposite way and think about smoking as much as possible, but think about all the negatives. Think about how much you used to smell, think about how expensive it was, think about the reasons why you stopped etc, etc. This is why I suggest the Allen Carr book, The Easy Way. It’s a companion that will give you all this type of encouragement and help you through the initial stages.
    Be proud of yourselves.

Last weekend was a bit of a nightmare (not smoking related) so I bought a packet smoked half of them, but haven’t had one since Thursday morning now. Fancy one like mad, but trying hard

Don’t worry, just a little set back, the smoking that is, start again you’re doing well. Keep it up.

I went for lunch yesterday with my wife and her parents. We sat in the corner of the restaurant and I had a first class view of where the smokers went to get their fix!

None of them looked very happy stood outside puffing away. It’s funny how when you are a smoker you always tell yourself that you have a smoke to reduce stress, but the smokers I saw looked anything but stress-free.

Keep it up chaps and emsz.

As for thinking about smoking all the time it does get easier, but it will take time.

don simon talks sense (a rare occurrence)

The idea is not to put them out of your mind, but to think why you’re doing it and all the good things that will become of it.

emsz – seriously dudess – I’m thrilled to hear you’re back on the wagon 🙂 Work hard. Good luck. Freedom will be the reward. (Hope everything else is ok too).

    Ah, Awesome.
This thread was at the front of my mind earlier, I was driving along and went to grab a bit of nicotine gum… all gone!! A bit of a panic ensued. Then I got distracted, I think it was by how the suspension of the micra in front was struggling on its passenger side. Hadn’t even thought about smoking again since, that was almost 6 hours ago. Looks like today is going to be the first day nicotine free. 8)

Awesome stuff everyone. I’ve just come off the motorway and I was stuck behind a micra that was down on the passenger side as well. 😯

Was it on an L plate with 2 seriously heavy looking occupants… the passenger being particularly big boned?
