After the equivalent of ~14.5k miles over ~3.5 years and thinking about getting my first ever replacement chainset ready for well over a year, I’m hoping to make the brave decision to actually buy one and have it in the spares box as I might actually need to replace the rings this year.

Sadly, my dither and delay was rather foolish, as the 105 R7000 compact chainset I wanted to replace the 105 5800 with has shot up in price especially in recent times and there does seem to be a severe stock issue… From ~£90 to ~£150! 😮

So even though it’s heavier and not so hip/trendy (albeit many 105 road bikes have been scimping in this area and coming with this lower tier FC-RS510), I’m thinking about compromising and getting this FC-RS510 as the replacement for ~50% of the price.

https://4iiii.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/360050323171-Shimano-FC-RS510 suggests they can’t fit their power meter to a 510 left crank, but I could use my existing 105 5800 4iiii crank.

Do you agree and/or do you use this combo?

The RS510 chainset is modelled on the 5800/5700 chainset so I can’t see why a 5800 left arm wouldn’t work.

£72 on merlin is a cracking price for what is basically the older 105 chainset.

    It works.
That unclear support article means what you read it to mean: 4iii won’t retrofit the module to the crank that comes with the 510, but a whole 105 crank with the 4iii PM is fine attached to the rest of that crankset.

I’ve just bought that chainset for my turbo bike (pretty much the same cost as buying 2 new 130BCD rings). First impression taking it out of the box was that it looked near identical to the previous gen 105 on my gravel bike!

Thanks for input so far, looks positive.

It was the Merlin £72.50 I was contemplating, it was sub £60 last year, maybe because back then I still had “gold” loyalty discount status but I was quite restrained in 2020 so I now have “silver.”

Surprising weight difference between the 34/50 fc-rs510 and the r7000 chainset, ~910 vs 715! 😮

    Given stock availability and price hikes, I’m now pondering a route I never expected to go down… Buying a £7.50 34T 6800 ring and a £50 50T 6800 ring, 148g total vs 231g for the fc-rs510 rings.

My Cube has only been out in rain or standing water a handful of times, there’s no obvious issue with the cranks or the BB, so maybe saving some money and weight by just buying the rings might be justifiable… Even though they are relatively expensive compared to buying a whole crankset.
