Rocks on grass verge

If I put a big white rock on my grass verge to stop my idiot neighbour driving over it will I die? Will he die? Will he legally be able to wee in my shoes if he falls over it? Is it illegal or opening myself up to a no win no fee claim

I appreciate this is a very STW hand-wringing answer but, have you tried asking him not to?

Is it “your” verge, or a strip of public land which happens to be outside your house?

If it’s actually your land then feel free.

If it’s your land do as you wish, rocks etc pretty commonly used for this purpose. As above you can ask your neighbour. If the verge is public land he can park there if he wants

Does the council maintain it? (If they don’t that doesn’t necessarily tell you anything, ofc…)

It’s maintained by the council so at a guess it’s not mine. We paid 2k for a dropped curb so we had driveway access. Last year the council sent letters out about people driving over grass verges to get on to their drives or parking on verges as they were becoming like swamps. I’d have thought that unlikely.

As it’s the council’s property, and they’re already on the ball about it seemingly, why not ask them to do something about it? You can grass (ho ho!) your neighbour in in the process so they know it’s not you.

My suspiscion is that the verge is considered part of the road and therefore belongs to the council and you cannot put rocks on it – but I may be wrong.
Years ago I was going down a country road and huge tractor appeared around the corner I was approaching and forced me to go onto the verge which had been decorated with rocks.
That cost me about £400 for two new tyres and a new alloy wheel for my Volvo V70 🙁

If I’d known about the verge ownership thing then I’d have taken him to court.

Probably council owned and part of the highway much as a pavement is. Yellow lines there? Technically, I think (I could be wrong) can’t just park on the verge to avoid parking on the yellow lines? Happens all the time though and I even see cars and vans from council services park on them.

Yellow lines apply all the way across the pavement / verge / whatever up to the property.

The verge outside my house got chewed up and looked shit due to our car being parked on it.
We had a parking space put in our front garden.
I filled in the ruts and reseed ed the grass. To keep cars and birds off I put posts in with netting. The netting has gone but I’ve forgotten to take the posts out.
Our house no longer looks like hill billies live there.

Wrecking of verges is very annoying. The local school bus turns around in a side road by our small holding and half the time they get it wrong, mount the curb and onto the grass verge and trash it.

But up a lane near here there is a grass verge with no curb in a tight, twisty section of road that has rocks on it. It is in a location where a situation like sharkbait describes is very likely to happen. Fortunately we know they are there, i am sure plenty of people have not been, nor will be so fortunate.

But then to counter that if the rocks were not there I am sure more people would go on the grass and smear more mud on the road.

I remember my brother done a similar thing. In my dad’s brand new company car 8O.

My dad did this in the 80s as people kept parking outside our house to visit the butty shop a few doors down. Did the trick, couple of people have walloped them over the years and there’s been no come back, make them decorative (nice big rock) and it’s legitimate.

We went for one of them mini fences when our neighbours did the same, used to piss me right off, especially when they overhung our 1 car drive and there was nothing parked on their 2 car drive.

I want to buy a farm so I never have to deal with neighbours again.

If you were in a busy area where lots of different people parking there through the day then something defensive like rocks would be most effective. However you’re only wanting to discourage one person from driving on the verge so you need to send a message to him – not to everyone. Putting rocks of the verge uglys the place up for everyone and makes it difficult for the council to maintain the grass. Just empty a bag of nails out over the grass – he’ll eventually get the message. 🙂

My parents once gave me a lift to a friend’s house in the middle of nowhere; we got the wrong house, so turned around, accidentally scraping over some rocks on the edge of the drive. We then drove a few hundred metres further to the right house where we noticed the rock had snagged the fuel hose and it had left a trail of petrol all along the road.

Unfortunately we must have been slightly too young or too goody-two-shoes, because we didn’t immediately set fire to it.

I still regret it to this day. Maybe I should go back and try it again one day.

I did this at my last house to stop people from driving over, and parking on, my front bloody garden. It was roughly 18″ square and a foot high and still folk drove into it. No complaints though.

Further to thebove, I should mention what fun we had many years ago on a forestry estate I was working on

We had some traffic cones across a gateway to stop people using it as a short cut and they kept getting pushed/squashed over the weekend by an unknown driver who decided he knew better.

Until the day we filled the inside of the cones with concrete that was

we found a nice big smear of red paint and primer on one of the cones, so it must have made a nice mess of his wing 🙂

Near me we have people who mow their own verges and then there are others who par on their own resulting in a muddy mess which seems a shame. A few of those who care more use logs to stop people driving on their verges but have seen rocks elsewhere. One lady around the corner from me has planted some small shrubs on hers which is pleasant, good that no local official type has stopped her.

No, it doesn’t, and no, it won’t. It’s not unusual for councils to put large wooden posts around green spaces and along extended grass verges, in order to prevent this sort of thing happening, and it doesn’t stop them cutting the grass, either.
The main problem is that repeated strimming wears away the base of the posts, until they break off. This exact thing is around where I live, so putting some rocks/concrete posts/whatever along the verge shouldn’t cause any problems.

Running a taxi company? There’s a few houses round my way doing that. I do wonder if they’re even legal, but then the police / council don’t give a crap about parking on grass verges or even double yellows. They were happy to paint the yellows finally near me, but means crap all. As said, some council service vehicles are some of the offenders!
