I’m clinging on… wanna see how it plays out, especially to see what Strait & Zink pull off, and the mad Kiwi!
Not for much longer though, 6 hour drive to work tomorrow morning 🙁

Just been called off so Strait takes it.

Kelly McGarry wuz robbed, although won $5000 for topping the peoples vote.

Zink won the best trick of the event.

    McGarry’s effort:

Plus one for McGarry being robbed-

Shame but I like that about the rampage, it’s a proper half-sane event so there’s always that high risk of disruption. Couple of years ago they had satellite uplink problems, dust storms, high winds etc, all helped give it a crazy seat-of-pants feel.

    Not bad for free, eh?

Bailed at the wind hold, shame it got called off. Expected to see some proper insanity on Zinc and McGarrys second runs. For me McGarry’s was the more mental flip, that canyon gap was huge and with the speed it just looked that bit more scary.

It’s a shame they can’t hold the 2nd round today. Infrastructure is still there. Riders are still there and I’m sure they’d be willing.
    Why not?
Awesome show anyway although I think I’ll mute the commentary and ‘incidental’ music next year.

I watched as long as I could. I thought some of the runs were lame by some riders but in the main most were “avin it” So I’m of the opinion that I’ll watch the next installment.

I don’t understand the scoring, but looks like neither do you lot and where you do it looks unfair..

For me, for me the bloke with the long blond hair who did 3 backloops nailed it.

    Am I wrong?

Nope. Should have gone to Kelly IMO.

Seems to be a lot of weight given to the difficulty up top, Strait did relatively little in terms of jumps and tricks – one no hander off the sender, hit the long jump at the bottom, and that was it, but his line at the top was much harder than McGarry’s – that said, McGarry was backflipping everything on his line.

Don’t think any of the runs were lame! Though I think some had to change their lines quite a lot because of the wind.

It’s good to watch partly because you do have a mix of riders from DH racers, to slopestyle and dirt jumpers. So you get some going for “gnarly” fast hard lines (like Gee’s run from a couple of years ago) and others who go for the big jumps and tricks (like Zink). The big tricks are always going to be the ones that get the attention but some of the other runs are just as impressive (though maybe look less so… TV probably doesn’t do some of it justice.)

Yeah it seems the combination of him riding some highly technical lines at the top and hitting the biggest drop (with a trick) sealed it for him.

I’m not unhappy to see it go to someone who picked technical natural lines over loadsa tricks.

Well I thought McGarry killed it but when he got lower down the hill he was off line and a bit all over the place. This probably cost him marks. However as others have said it is very difficult to judge a full run correctly purely from TV coverage.

I personally thought the competition was fantastic, not sure which riders did lame runs though! Disappointed that the rest of the riders didn’t get to do their second runs, I feel that there were some special things due, but hey that’s the nature of the beast.

McGarry sort of rolled along a groomed trail at the top, as opposed to dropping into the really tech stuff, but he pulled off a backflip up there, backflipped the massive gap, and another flip or two for good measure. Si I’d agree on the natural trails thing to an extent – just not sure Strait deserved quite so much, given his lower section was far less impressive than others. Then again, maye if I was sat on my bike up there with wee running down my leg, I’d have more appreciation for the steepness he was facing. Headcam videos would be cool to see.

Strait’s was the one for me, just a great top-bottom run, even though it lacked the big moments.

Strait’s run was sick, so smooth and stylish. Made it look so easy, like he was flowing through a set of trails or something.

Faircloughs knack knack whip was the highlight for me though.

Lacondeguy was brilliant too, the speed of him at the top was amazing.

Watching McGarry again, he sort of lost his way at the end, and was a bit stop-starty at the top compared to Strait who flowed through, and he cased the gap a bit (feels REALLY critical to say that about a 75ft backflip) whereas Strait’s no-hander was as smooth a landing as you’ll ever see. I suppose the judges have to look a that kind of detail, as opposed to “HOLY COW A BACKFLIP”

Ok, by lame I mean “considered and slow” 😉

I didn’t realise you had multi discipline riders form other aspects of two wheeled fun, thought they were all seasoned Pros in this discipline see.. in that case I’ll STFU and doff my extremely large peaked cap to them.

    Yo.

Yep, him and Fairclaw and Andreu looked like they were just having fun, really confident.

i dont think they were too far off on judging.

when i watched straits run i thought ‘thats a goodun’ just smooth and gnar up top. i though it was better than lacondeguys first. bit like aggys run till he binned it. so smooth.

i think zink was way over marked. no way his run was better than lecondeguy. bonkers flip and tech but he missed stuff at the bottom so should have been marked down for that. at the end of the day they might have given him marks for not actually dieing on camera.

mcgarry was just nuts. but again i think he missed out on gnar but the canyon flip was bonkers and so unexpected. the vid of cam mccauls face when he pulled it was mint.

hope the hurt guys heal up ok though. some proper nasty crashes. so much on the line and the line is so narrow. you want to think these guys arnt pressured into doing stuff they are not totally happy with.

for me andreus second run was maybe better than straits first but unfortunatlely doesnt count… the speed and flow up top was nuts.

What always catches me out is the camera angles, the wide helicopter one always makes it look simpler than it is, even the ridgeline out to the left looks like they’re just trundling along then you see it up close and 8O.

TBF everyone in the contest is basically a mad genius, it’s almost a shame to have a winner.

Just watched Strait’s run again, the top section before the sender was pretty amazing. Probably made it look a little too easy!

Shame about Semenuk’s crashes, would have been good to see his full run.

I think it was fair. Strait did a similar top section to Semanuk (no slouch yet didn’t manage to pull it off) and made it look easy. really impressive. Chuck in the trick on the step down and that massive jump at the bottom and it was an amazing bit of riding.

McGarry’s line at the top looked a lot less technical and (apart from flipping the canyon) didn’t have anything that would have been beyond a lot of the riders if they had chosen the same line.

Zink would have won if he had kept it together on the bottom section as his top bit was similar to Strait’s. I guess he is not too bothered though and happy to be still alive 😯 .

+1. Lacondeguys’ run was miles more entertaining. Zink did one (massive) trick and the rest was filler.
There were some guys I’d never heard of but really enjoyed their runs. It’s not just the big names who are worth watching!
Shame for Semenuk. Gutted for him.

looking at Bignelis crash I think the wind caught him and blew him off target, they stopped it after his run, you can see the flags are flapping

    hope he heals up

Though Agassiz’s run was pretty good. Not in the same category as top three but just as good as Lacondeguy and the McCauls. He seemed to loose points because he made a few mistakes

    Zink’s backflip was just amazing

It would have been great to see what would have gone down on the remainder of the second runs.

I’d agree, thinking about it, Straight rode one of the hardest lines and made it look easy, whereas McGarry came off his line.

Tyler Mcaul also rode a mental line, but as he didn’t have a big trick in his run, didn’t get on the podium.

Such a subjective thing, but it was good that they didn’t automatically make the biggest trick the winner.

It was great fun to watch; remember last years winner Sorge, I could never work out why he won it. The scoring is odd at times but as people have said Strait’s almost nonchalant riding of the top section nailed it.

I always figured with Sorge’s line last time that I was just missing what made it great. Could be wrong o’course.

Similar to strait’s, from what I can remember, in that he rode a tricky line with a few big tricks and made it look easy.

McGarry had flow and tricked it so well and that’s why he won peoples choice. Strait finessed the hill and Zink had one big trick, but I wonder what their second runs would have looked like…. hats off to all of them.

Lacondeguy was my favourite to watch – so much speed and style on the top section and some huge tricks.

While Zink’s backflip was incredible the run overall wasn’t great at all.

Any update on the guy who had the big crash towards the end? Lost his line on landing.

Also, I didn’t notice any 360’s this year??? Maybe some of the big guns were saving one for their second run?! I think they look waaay better than flips.

    ddmonkey

Yeah there were a few 360’s thrown off the smaller step downs. Not sure how the guy who crashed is…
