question for the people that have tried a fat front on a 29er

I tried a semi fat year before last, karate monkey and 26″ rims with nokian 3″ tyres. It was ok but heavy and sluggish. and did I mention heavy. just wondered what others had thought.

I know ssstu did fat front on a km and went full fat, anyone else tried it and what did you think thanks

I have a 1/2 fat Jones – it’s far from sluggish!

Mine was big tyres in front and rear to try balance it out as I used standard forks, I never tried one of each

Tazzy is pretty nippy on his fat fronted jones- I on the other hand was quite slow

Funnily enough he is quicker than me on ‘normal’ bikes as well

’twas a giggle riding a fat frontage tho

I have a fat fronted Jones and a Mukluk fatbike.

Compared to the Mukluk the Jones is a race whippet. 😆

Lol I’m still tempted , there is a full set up on classifieds but its a budget wheel and tyre I think mmm h don’t know lol

How does it ride – feel riding in comparison to rigid forks, sus and what are pros and cons mate. Ta

my fat front jones, hoons all over big rocky things in the peak and north wales. I prefer it to a short travel fork as with the right pressure the front just swallows stuff like a fat amoeba. It’s far more fun than any rigid bike should be. Hell it’s the most fun bike I’ve ever had!

Stu what fork did you use on the monkey, I’ve got an el Mariachi now and salsa did a part fat test using the enabler fork which is longer than the surly fork by 20mm

I used an Enabler fork.
It’s now fitted on Amanda’s El M.
Works great on that.

Well was thinking of a sus fork to compliment the new bike but a fat front is same kind of outlay;)

Plus the service intervals of a fat front will beat even the rohloff rather than legs off rebas every 25 hours !!!

i did it for a while on my td-1 dont think the concept of ultra light race bike worked with fat front.

it was like riding a penny farthing in that if you managed to wrestle the front wheel where you wanted to go the rest of the bike would follow – even if it meant it had to travel through a brick wall to do so.

how ever on stus blacksheep i tried first it felt much much more natural and suspension feeling than my td-1

The full fat on my sandman seems so much more balanced and plesent to ride in that respect.

The gazaloddi fat thing is a misnomer – the surly tires weigh about half that of those gazzas – they were horrendous.

What bike are you putting it on? Won’t the fork be too short for suspension corrected 29er frames? That genesis is very low on the front hence why it works for him, not sure it would be the same if you put it on a swift or something with a 470mm a-c.

I’d really like to try a fat front, come on brant :D…or Sam for that matter 😀

I played with 3/4 fat – Endo on the front and Gazza on the back (on 80mm rim).

TBH the Gazza is such a heavy slow tyre, full fat is almost incomparable. IMO it matters more on the rear as that is where your weight is.

my frames designed around the middle fork with a 29 inch wheel so id have thought it would have handled ok with the 29er but alas no 🙁

Yeah that’s why I asked stu as the salsa enabler for is the correct length and can be bought th same colour as my bike 😉

What SSStu says really. I ran half fat on my Jones for a couple of years and loved it, I’ve been FS riding for a couple of years now and missed it loads so have just committed to an OnOne Fatty…

It does just make rigid much more fun, MASSIVE grip from the front and if you ride ‘soft’ you can be pretty quick on anything. I really liked the feel over short travel FS even though it’s undamped.

Have had a couple of quick spins on a fat front Swift, and originally built my old Kona Unit up with the fat front.
I couldn’t get it out of my head though that the back wheel/tyre on the fat front 29er is bigger that the front and it looks weird. Even through my warped eyes.
Still, built up the trusty Sovereign as a fat front and love it.
No issues with sluggishness either.

I am going to use a surly 29+ front wheel (as seen on the krampus) on a cotic solaris with slacker ha and rigid fork as soon as my whiskey jar is full…
