cool, sounds like the lifeline one will be fine then. I was just a bit concerned about what crashtestmonkey and then Brant wrote

I used the Lifeline one too. No probs.

I got the Lifeline one as well but had to press it in, there’s no way it would just push in with my fingers, which is what I was expecting. Works fine though!!

Sounds like there may be some tolerance issues with the headtube as well as the seatube 😯

Hmmm does he not state the lifeline is a different size 🙄

i was tempted at first, for a winter build project, sounds like a total nightmare now though

Specs on planet x site for said FSA headset states 52mm ID for bottom bearing , not 51.8 brant ?
Maybe the fact that the supplied headset is a caged bearing type and not a sealed bearing type as shown ??
Lifeline says 52.2 mm …. end of the day you make your choice and the FSA one was the wrong one for my london road !
Puts me off further planet X purchases after this 🙁

I posted the spec of the FSA No.42 on the previous page.
Bearing is 51.8mm, Headtube bore is 52.1mm.

I haven’t worked for Planet X for nearly a year, so I’m sorry if I’m just confusing matters.

When I designed that frame, it was for an FSA No.42 ACB headset. Not the spec of the lifeline one.

    Things may have changed.

    Over and out.

    and that told me 🙂

I’m still well happy with mine, seat post clamps up nicely and the headset all works fine, even if it is the wrong one. Cracking F&F’s if you ask me. Especially for £150!!

But then I seem to be one of the lucky few who has never had a problem with planet x /On One and I’ve had 3 frames off them. And I ride a 2010 Ragley Blue pig which is also bang on.

I’d still say go for it dirtyrider.

Okay I’m a little bit wiser but still confused!

    My understanding so far:

The Wiggle Lifeline headset is slightly the wrong size but appears to work

The FSA No.42 is what the frame was designed for but nobody seems to like the caged bearings.

So if I try and find and alternative to the two headsets above, am I right in thinking the headset needs to meet the following spec:

    Upper Headset IS 42 / 28.6
    Lower Headset IS 52 / 40 (45 deg)?

Have I got this right or either a)I’m missing something or b) I’ve totally got this wrong!

Rang PX this morning to be reassured about the headset and seat tube, they say the headset is an industry standard and nothing one off and they have no knowledge at this time of any other QC issues on the frame and if there are any they will refund in full with postage …at this price £149 I pulled the trigger there just are so few framsets with this many features out there and NONE at this price. fingers crossed.

No knowledge except the emails and photos sent by people in this thread that haven’t been answered yet, obviously. Customer service is what you do after the sale, not the promises you make before.

I’ll update with progress and outcome, hope you get a decent frame.

Well hopefully my making inquiry’s and quoting your predicament will focus PX on the issues you and a few others have.

    Good luck.

the headset is an industry standard

and we all know how few of those there are 😉

They had the bb width wrong in the specs, so less chance with the headset 🙂

    Still like mine*

*provided I’m not going to die due to wrong headset or seat post related issues

I ended up fitting the bottom bearing and crown race I had spare from some random Cheapo headset I’d bought for another bike, and I bought This for a tenner for the top bearing/race… all seems to fit together and run smoothly thus far (Not finished assembling or ridden the bike yet though)…

+1 Jeff, other than automated email saying its “high priority”…

Been asked to send it back to progress the case… don’t want to do this if they are going to say it’s fine…

Been asked to send it back to progress the case

Theyve asked me to return mine (which I was already doing) but have also said they’ve pulled all the remaining stock to be QC’ed and have passed it up the chain so not just a pro forma “we’re looking into it” response.

flybywire, it shouldn’t as its the same spec (probably the same headset) as the Wiggle/Lifeline which has a larger diameter than the FSA spec the L-R needs according to Brant.

Guys, the headset is FSA Orbit C-40 No.42 ACB Tapered Headset, it’s a standard part we use it on nearly all of our tapered/integrated frames. Maybe a dozen frames in our line-up use it, my Viner Volterra included.

I suspect 0.4mm nominally oversized (and the bearing is less than that) may allow some bearings to fit some frames given the frame tolerances and the bearing tolerances.

Other frame and bearing combinations with the same nominal sizes may not fit.

The Lifeline headset (52.2mm) has a nominal 52.0mm bearing I think. The FSA is a nominal 51.8mm. The frames are 52mm cups – no?

I reckon if it goes in by finger pressure you’re ok – if you need a mallet, get a different headset.

    Others may disagree.

well put igm – the lower race on that brand-x generic type pushes in easily no excess pressure needed to apply.

If anyone’s planning on building up one of these frames and is looking for build kit, in the next few days I’ll have a complete Sora 2×9 drivetrain and a set of Specialized Axis disc brake 700c wheels for sale.

They will be getting removed from a new bike so will be in prefect condition and going for sensible price.

If anyone’s interested, my email is in my profile.

Possibly a stupid question but for those with the lifeline headset, did you end up with some leftover bits? Having a practice assembly, working from bottom to top I have:
The crown race (thin black split ring)
    The bottom bearing unit
    The corresponding top bearing unit
The top race (silver split ring)
The black domed thing with the writing on
    Star fangled nut
    Stem cap

I’m left with thicker black ring with a rim around it (best I can do description wise) and a thin silver washer in a separate bag. Any ideas where these go?

FWIW, looks like the bearings will go in with hand pressure

@ Swdan , the black ring with the rim around goes underneath the domed black cover with writing on it and on top of the silver split ring if if that makes sense ?

The crown race (thin black split ring)
    The bottom bearing unit
    The corresponding top bearing unit
The top race (silver split ring)
    black ring with rim around
The black domed thing with the writing on
    Star fangled nut
    Stem cap
the thin washers i still have in the bag ????

thin silver washer goes on top of the upper silver split ring.

The black ring with a rim (rubberised?) sits on top of that, then the domed thing on top.

Awesome, cheers guys. Have just packed the frame back up so will give that a go tomorrow. Didn’t think I should have spare bits and was surprised there wasn’t a parts list or installation instructions with it. Also, I’m sure all those bits have proper names but glad you knew what I meant

    swdan
    Free Member

Actually not sure that works, it doesn’t seem to fit unless I’m being an idiot. Its a fairly thick black ring which then has a wide rim around it, probably 3 or 4mm wide. The only rubberised bit I can find is on the bottom of the domed bit which has “lifeline” written on it

Not sure. It’s not some sort of collar tho convert straight after tho taper is it? What does it look like inside?

    swdan
    Free Member

That’s what I was thinking. Its smooth on the inside and the internal diameter fits over the steerer up until it tapers. The external diameter (excluding the lip) fits inside the lower bearing assembly. Was just confused as couldn’t work out where it went.

Its also not shown in the image on the wiggle website so reckon its a mystery piece that found it’s way into the box

Massive confusion on the headset front, there appear to be two FSA orbit c 40 no 42 headsets but one is designated “ACB” the other “caged bearing”

(ACB) being the correct one, to make maters worse i think the PX web site “may” be wrong as they don’t list the correct headset in the components section and I think the picture they have for the incorrect one is actually the pic for the correct one ….. 😥

Had several emails updating me on progress of return, culminating in 2 within 45 minutes this afternoon confirming a replacement has been shipped.

Fingers crossed as since the cat got out the bag Munqe chick is excited about building it up.
