We are hoping to go on a lazy, lounging around a pool, wander along a beach type holiday this year.

It will likely be last week of August or thereabouts. The problem is that while we want it to be nice & warm, my  8 year old daughter doesn’t like it when the temps get too high. And to be honest, nor do I particularly.

We went to Corfu a couple of years ago in early May and while it was a nice holiday, there was lots of moaning & groaning about how hot it was. It was also very humid, which I don’t think helped.

I’ve been scouring holiday locations that aren’t too far away (perhaps 4hr flight max), which get to a nice temp without going to silly temperatures. And to be honest, struggling a bit. I’m probably asking for the impossible.

Any suggestions would be appreciated of beach/pool type holiday locations that get nice & warm without being scorchio – Goldilocks temperature. Moon on a stick, optional. Ta.

    Is Rhyl Suncentre still open?

Eurocamp type place in Northern France? There’ll be quite a choice of ones that have multiple pools, near a beach, and probably near a nice town.

Plus, you can drive there and bring back loads of cheap wine.

Rhyl has a new ‘sun centre’.

Seriously, Madera – wife just come back and it’s low 20’s. Just a bit north of the Canneries but never get’s too hot there I believe. That said, the sun is still very strong, so plenty of sun scream. Sounds ideal for me TBH.

Something like this, but France has a lot of small hotels with pools near beaches.

Normandy is nice, or you can go further south to La Rochelle or Bordeaux.

Mate of mine has a Polish wife – they go up to the Baltic coast each summer.

    How hot is too hot?

Late August it’s usually mid to high 20’s in Scandinavia… So you’ve got a lot of choice!

Bit short on beaches where i am though. Unless a sandy lakeside floats your boat!

    Cheers all.

nbt – Rhyl….ha ha. Not sure that would get past the wife approval system!

IHN – yeah, ta. We did consider France for a bit of Eurocamp action. I think ideally though, my Wife wants somewhere we can go with no driving required, probably all-inclusive so we don’t have to think about cooking and meals etc.
We did go to Les Alicourts in the Loire valley a few years ago and that was a great holiday, so something to keep in mind.

Fossy – Madeira is a good shout. I’ll take a look although seems more adult oriented hotels, rather than places set-up for families – not seen any with mini-disco options yet 😂

Jimdoubleyou – will perhaps take another look at France. Seen a few suggestions of North Spain too.

mert – mid to high 20s is what we are thinking. Never been to Scandinavia and would have no idea where to start looking, but that could be an interesting option.
I dunno why, but I don’t think of Scandinavia being the place to go for all-inclusive chill by the pool type holidays.

It probably isn’t! All inclusive is something Swedes go south for. Leaves lots of options for me though!

Worth looking at Croatia? I’ve never been but it’s on my list – a few people I know have had amazing holidays there. I think high 20’s are what’a usually seen end of august.

Another random option – what about Jersey?

Tenerife doesn’t seem to get quite as hot high season and the shoulder periods are warmer that the med.

I worked in the med for a few year in my youth. It was baking mid season and that was acclimatized after months slowly building up to it. Nothing would get me back there in peak season now.

Most people’s family holiday plans feel a bit arse about face. If you are lucky enough to afford it and have the leave for 2 holidays a year staying in the UK in the summer when the weather gods give you the best chance and other places are too hot, then going abroad in may or oct half term seems to make more sense to me.

No beach onboard, but how about a Norway/Iceland cruise?

We did a Princess Cruises one in August ’08, lovely weather without getting too hot for us like it is today and tomorrow in Hampshire, plus getting fleeting visits of numerous ports.

Trouble is a pool needs hot weather to warm it. IMO anything below 28deg air temp and pools just done get warm !

    I really liked Menorca.

There’re also pools at Morzine or Bourg St Maurice.

    Just sayin’

Madeira has a higher risk of the flight getting cancelled due to weather I understand so if you go there book a package. Friend went with Jet2 who looked after them really well when flight was cancelled. Other people with cancelled flights were just told you’ll have to book another one…

What about somewhere with a bit of altitude? Many of the French ski resorts are good in summer. You could look at “club med lake and mountain holidays” for the all-inclusive vibe?

The French must be due some strike action soon to put their airspace a no go area and muck up all the flights from the UK

Scandinavia will probably have loads of 🦟 due to trees and lakes

I’d second Tenerife. Recently did 6 months out there. Climate is amazing. It does get hot, mid to late 20’s. But there is the trade winds, no more than a breeze but it helps it feel nice temperature wise.

We are going back in August, but AirBnB for us. We did a week in Feb all inclusive at the Guarmina Princess (prob wrong spelling!) –  but it was really nice play to stay. Seafront location with nice walks along the prom. Far enough away from the bars and clubs so was quiet.

Pool area was nice. Open so you could feel the breeze. Defo recommend it. I also don’t do well in the sun, guess it’s my Celtic background, but in Tenerife I’ve never felt uncomfortably hot.

Porto santo, next door to Madeira has an amazing beach to walk along. The sand doesn’t get hot and the beach is around 5 miles long. I stayed somewhere in the middle of the beach so there was an hour’s walk in each direction. Christopher Columbus lived in the town for a while. Some nice volcanic scenery as well.

We are looking at the moment too, similar needs for temperature as I’m half Irish so pale, freckly and a tad ginger every now and again. 😄

I’m surprised to hear that the Canaries are possibly cooler, I assumed they would be much hotter than the Balearics in the summer, where we are currently looking.  Also, beaches in canaries can be rough as it’s mainly volcanic.

I don’t think Madeira is family friendly, as in kids clubs and mini discos etc, as the more traditional beach resorts.

Greece and Greek Islands though, I think will be sweltering. Trouble is now, there seems to be more heatwaves.  We caught the back end of the Europe heatwave last year when we went to Portugal. Honestly, it was absolutely roasting and we didn’t venture out poolside until around 3pm. Just far too hot for us.

Croatia might do, but not sure of summer temps?

We are erring on Menorca, been twice when the kids were small and we were lucky enough to get a villa with a pool. It was a godsend tbh. We filled it with daft inflatables and the kids were put into those sunscreen rash shirts and they spent all day in the pool.  Multiple trips to the loo weren’t a big upheaval and being able to just jump in your own pool when it got too hot, or go inside, was so convenient.  Catering was easy, they have cakes for breakfast!  Some salad and olives for lunch and then a stroll to a restaurant for evening. Nice and quiet island, probably going back this year.

It’s a bit of a pickle as our kids are now old, out of school but we still have to go in term holidays times as Mrs Rock works in a School (not teaching).

Anywhere in the Canaries should be reet. Fuertoventura is our personal favourite, but they’re all nice. As has already been said, it’s mid to high 20’s but the constant wind off the sea means it never feels too hot, just really pleasant

This deceptive temperature is a double-edged sword though. Make sure you regularly splatter yourself in factor 30 or you’ll get frazzled and look like a lobster. Not that I’d have ever been as stupid as to do something like that 🥵

Camping de la Cote D’Argent, Hourtin. You’ve got beach, cabins, tents, cycling through the pines, surfing, a few bars and eateries, magnificent LeClerc a short drive away, wineries. They’ve spent a fortune on the pools here. Been coming to this coast since 82, my kids loved it.

You’re looking at low 30s at least. https://www.accuweather.com/en/hr/split/121161/august-weather/121161

OP – maybe look at Baltic beach holidays or Polish or Slovakian mountains – they have some swimming pools that are heated by hot springs, bright sun and not roasting hot. Holland or Belgium camping by the lakes…?

On a similar theme, Camping au Port Punay, Châtelaillon-Plage. Lovely site, couple of bars and eateries and a small beach nearby, cycling along the front, nice walk to Châtelaillon-Plage, which is a lovely town with an eeeeeeeeeeeeeeenormous beach.

get to a nice temp without going to silly temperatures. And to be honest, struggling a bit.

Is that not subjective?  I’d read that as low 20’s never more than 26…  I work with people who would read that at mid 20’s never the 30’s, and some who would say high 20’s – and never more than body heat!    But those things also all vary depending on the sun, a breeze, access to water to cool down in,

I can’t really help you as my views on temp are probably closer to your 8yr olds… so I’ve always avoided those sort of holidays.  But then:

And to be honest, nor do I particularly.

Which made me wonder why you are thinking of that kind of holiday?  Is it just because that’s what you’ve always done or think people do?

Never been to Scandinavia and would have no idea where to start looking, but that could be an interesting option.
I dunno why, but I don’t think of Scandinavia being the place to go for all-inclusive chill by the pool type holidays.

All inclusive is an extra requirement!  Scandinavia is a great choice for people with your daughter’s temperature desires!   Probably less beaches but plenty of small houses by a lake.  No all inclusive – but buy from supermarket and help yourself – cheaper to buy outside Scandi!  When we went it was cheaper to fly (from Scotland) to Copenhagen, hire a car, drive to Sweden – have the holiday, drive back to copenhagen and stay another two nights in Denmark to do Hans Christain Anderson experience and Legoland than to fly and hire in Sweden!

3pm is just about the hottest part of the day ! Yes the sun is stronger a little earlier, but the heat builds in to the afternoon.

Yeah, you’re right it is subjective. I meant to say in my original post, aiming between mid 20’s up to perhaps 30deg. I did add that detail later when mert asked, but easy to miss given the amount of replies.

Which made me wonder why you are thinking of that kind of holiday?  Is it just because that’s what you’ve always done or think people do?

I do like that kind of holiday occasionally – we don’t do them particularly often, we’ve had a pretty stressful last year or so & it is my Wife’s idea of a relaxing break. My daughter has got more confident with her swimming, so I expect a lot of time will be spent in the pool and on slides. I also quite fancy a holiday where I don’t have to drive, don’t have to worry about what to eat, go shopping at a supermarket etc. Just turn up, unpack swimming shorts & suncream and chill out for a bit.

If we can find somewhere that isn’t so warm that it becomes something to grumble about, all the better.

All inclusive is an extra requirement!

Yeah, again – you are correct. That is an extra requirement. I rushed my original post a bit as I was typing it at work. I missed some details.

Great range of suggestions though and I’m gonna probably end up doing a lot of Googling tonight while watching the England game.
