    Road/CX/MTB?
    HT/FS?
    Disc/canti?
    What frame is it?
Does it need to have mountings for panniers or just a seatpost rack?

Could you perhaps be any less vague with your initial request?

My word somebody got out of bed the wrong side today!

For a HT MTB running 700c wheels with disc brakes and mountings for panniers rather than a seatpost rack.

Well if you ask a vague question, you can’t complain if you get a vague answer!! 😀

The Blackburn EX-1 came highly recommended to me in a similar situation on my CX/tourer, but I ended up going with a Carradice Bagman mounted on my saddle, and a Longflap Camper bag on it. 24 litres was more than enough for me for a LeJog and came in a lot lighter than a rack/pannier combo.

I’ve got a Freeload, fit it to my Mojo for nights away, great rack, stable and strong. You can get pannier racks to fix on them, but it’s not a budget setup.

EDIT: Just had a look at the website, and see they’ve been bought out by Thule, so the price may come down a bit.

You can use P-clips to attach a standard pannier to the seat/chain stays….

Old Man Mountain from the Carradice website. Solid, good with discs etc, but not cheap.

Some of the Axiom[/url] racks are worth a look if you are putting a rack on a non-touring bike. Not just in terms of getting a connection to the frame without braze-ons.

A mountain bike frame will generally have quite short chain stays so if you are a bigger rider, or more specifically have big feet then you’ll tend to get your heals catching the pannier.

The streamliner and unfit racks have a sort bracket that cranks backwards from the dropout, so it clears disks calipers but it also moves the rack backwards a bit too. At the top it connects the seatstay bridge rather than the stays themselves. The plate at the dropouts is steel and easy to bend/cut/file if theres any fouling around the drop out or disk mount. If you don’t have the little threaded rack / mudguard hole on the dropout you could probably put your qr through the plate instead.

I use the streamliner road as I tend to only use the one lightly loaded pannier so having it sit a little more inboard helps.

I have used a Tubus disco and a seat clamp with rack bosses on it quite a lot.
It worked very well but is wquite low profile. If you want expedition style, you will need something beefier maybe

Stayhigh – I dunno, I’ve never seen them in the flesh. The Yak told me to suggest it, I reckon it was the first thing he’d seen that fitted the description. The guys a prick.
