Until a nuclear power station has been fully decommissioned in the UK the cost of decommissioning is unknown.

Since no nuclear power stations have been fully decommissioned in the UK, the cost of decommissioning is unknown (is in the £billions and getting worse).

The energy used to make (enrich uranium) fuel for nuclear power stations comes from burning coal.

At the moment maybe. Don’t see why its important though.

Decommissioning is a price we will have to pay. And saying that because it’s never been done in the UK means we don’t know how much it will cost is silly, surely you can just look at how much it cost another country who has done it, to do it?

Fatboy dim – I think if anyone cared they would have asked – you just wanted to post up your best insult didnt you?[ Says a lot about you really]. It is a shame your abiltiy to reason is much poorer than your ability to insult so I can see why you stick to your strengths.

C’mon Junky– if Fatboy Dim is really the best you can come up with… because clearly you’re still upset about being slaughtered over your name sensitivity – and if you weren’t, then you wouldnt be bothering.

come on, you’ve gotta do better than merely making offensive names up Junky, otherwise I’d be calling you Wankyard 😉

Much better at least you put some thought into that effort.
slaughtered – yes that was what the counsellor said they thought maybe with some hard work and some self esteem workouts I would be over it in a few years time… fingers crossed eh.
Upset – you flatter the amount of stock I place in your view of me
You really would be happy if you had upset and annoyed someone which says more about you than me.
Anyway things to do happy trails

The thing about posts like this is that I click on them hoping for insightful, adult, and educated discussion.

But being the internet it’s a load of pedantic twaddle. A few posters with communication and social ability issues dominate. The net effect is some people get to waste a bit more of their lives, nothing advances, and people miss the opportunity for a good bike ride.

    Shame really.

Depends on your definition of fully decommissioned…….. What do you mean…….?
There are so many definitions passed around these kinds of arguments are irrelevant……
Just like all the comments about the historic volumes of waste produced and the current volumes being produced…… irrelevant.
The data for all these arguments is based upon the way these plants were designed, build and operated….. No one would design a new nuclear power plant in the same way… hence the volumes produced are dramatically smaller………

did you know that coal fired power stations produce as much radioactive isotopes as nuclear ones ?
at least nuclear power stations collect it into barrels instead of just blowing it into the atmosphere (even if we do just leave it for your children to deal with).
that said, any new nuclear power stations proposed now will take 25 years to come on line and we need clean power now.

“Watched a program years ago and scientist were discussing ways on how to store nuclear waste and developing signs to warn people. They even went as far as trying to develop the signs so that aliens could understand them”

I find this part pretty fascinating. Particularily because sooner or later someone will always make a comparison with the pyramids and other egyptian tombs- and nobody ever went into them did they  “No, don’t go in, certain death awaits!” “Must be valuable, crowbars out lads…”

ridiculous assertion. As much comes out of the chimneys waste from nukes is a much much larger amount

iirc the pyramids were mentioned 😀

The program must have been on at least 15 years ago and I always remember some scientist saying if you build something to keep people out someone always wants to get in.

Tidal power is nice, but you’re very limited on where you can build plants, its very expensive, and quite often you will end up destroying very nice natural environments.

So would you rather have a small dose of deadly poison or a large dose of not so deadly poison?

Whereas nuclear can be built absolutely anywhere, is dead cheap and there is no damage to the natural environment.
