projectFree MemberEven sky news is reporting the demise, saying staff are going wild in the building.
IanMunroFree MemberPresumably simply sidestepped by saying the sun will be published 7 days a week.

Just heard that Coulson to be arrested this afternoonHow would she know first?
jon1973Free Memberpretty clever move on behalf of News International, under the circumstances
ernie_lynchFree MemberAccording to my paper :
“The move also opens the way for a seven-day Sun newspaper, which it is believed News International has been planning for some time as part of a cost-cutting drive”
ernie_lynchFree MemberAnd :
“Ms Brooks, surrounded by her closest allies, then went out on to the newsroom floor to tell the rest of the staff the news.
She said: ”The Guardian newspaper were out to get us, and they got us.’
Observers said that she was crying when she spoke”.
So it’s the Guardian wot dun it ?
StonerFree MemberSo it’s the Guardian wot dun it ?
There’s nothing quite so grating as the sanctimonious GG 😉

* actually related to 2003 privacy stuff, but probably still representative up to a point.
CaptainFlashheartFree MemberHow would she know first?
Jeremy Clarkson told her.
chewkwFree MemberShe got big hairs …
Anyway, who actually read this newspaper anyway?
Oh well …
deadlydarcyFree MemberThere’s nothing quite so grating as the sanctimonious GG
Have you been reading Tebbit’s blog or something?
julianwilsonFree MemberObservers said that she was crying when she spoke”.
Radio 4 reported from their ‘anonymous source’ inside NOTW that she was in there for all of 2 minutes, flanked by security, and she was definitly not crying. But then I expect someone will come along and accuse the Beeb of being partisan about it too. 😕
Lord Prescott interviewed earlier on was well funny. I’d sort of forgotten quite how errr, ‘forthright’ he can sound sometimes. 😆
ernie_lynchFree Membershe was definitly not crying
Maybe she was stifling a laugh (you’re all getting sacked because of me, but I’m keeping my incredibly powerful and well-paid job) it can be difficult to tell sometimes.
CountZeroFull Memberthe notw also ran real investigative journalism agaist bad guys as well as the salacious stuff. It was a whole cut above the sun
In the same way Robert Mugabe is a cut above Pol Pot, in that he hasn’t murdered as many of his own people. I wonder just how much of that
real investigative journalism agaist bad guys
was carried out using phone hacking against the innocent people involved?
All the NI tabloids are vile, best used for wiping up dog vomit.ernie_lynchFree MemberJust heard that Coulson to be arrested this afternoon
Andy Coulson to be arrested over phone hacking tomorrow
“a second arrest is also to be made in the next few days of a former senior journalist at the paper”
It’s starting to look like the folding of NoW is in anticipation of full-blown chaos, as the scandal starts resulting in the arrests of senior former staff. It doesn’t appear to make any commercial sense.
SquidlordFree MemberReading this made me realise how many news headlines I first learn about from the STW chat forum. Luckily, I’m sure everyone here is 100% reliable.
ernie_lynchFree MemberI’m sure everyone here is 100% reliable
I pay good money for my information – you can be certain that it is reliable.
MSPFull MemberI am worried that this whole scandal may lead to some sort of legislation that ends up protecting “the establishment” rather than the public.
Anybody got any links to some of this “proper investigative journalism” carried out by the NOTW, they certainly seemed to hide it well behind all the ground-breaking tabloid sleaze.
j_meFree MemberAnybody got any links to some of this “proper investigative journalism” carried out by the NOTW, they certainly seemed to hide it well behind all the ground-breaking tabloid sleaze.
Edit for clarity: 😉
Garry_LagerFull MemberGreat tenacity by the Guardian – did anyone see this coming? They were being ridiculed 2 years back for banging on about the story, having an axe to grind etc (e.g. Sienna Miller’s phone hacked by lone PI who’s already done time for it – hardly a story that would bring down the NotW). They must have known how deep it ran and it would break open if they just kept chipping away at it.

Mazhur Mahmood
The fake sheik is your best link for investagitive journalism, entrapment and sleaze mongering is the lowest common denominator of investigative journalism.
In 1999, after a Mahmood investigation exposed the Earl of Hardwicke and another man as drug dealers,[13] the jury sent a note to the judge explaining that they had reached their decision to convict the two men with great reluctance. They said that they would have acquitted the defendants if the law had enabled them to take into account the “extreme provocation” they had been under to sell cocaine to Mahmood. The judge agreed and passed suspended sentences.[9][1
Gary_CFull MemberWhat I want to know is, where’s Fred?
Probbly gone for a job interview at N.I.
carbon337Free MemberIf this all carries on and it moves onto a general Murdoch hate campaign whats the chances of a total failure or very damaging impact to News Corp/ ala BP and the whole oil leak thing?
Mass share price drop or something?
Im dreaming that Murdoch has some bad times ahead.
goonFree Memberdid anyone see this coming?
I can’t be alone in remarking, back then, that this would slow burn before igniting. (Indeed, my wife just said “Well, you were right”. How I wish I was recording that conversation….)

None – all of Murdoch’s UK titles, including News of the World, account for just 4% of News Corporation’s turnover.
amodicumofgnarFull MemberIt just seems like another cycnical ploy. Killing off a paper that it seems was going to morph into the Sun on Sunday. Do what you were going to do anyway and perhaps clean out the few troublesome remaining staff with ethics.
Surely its time for campaign to stop the sun rising next week, whole country stop buying the paper for a week. Unfortunately based on ernie’s 4% stat it would be a gnatt bite, even if it was possible to do it.
CaptJonFree MemberSome legal eagles are suggesting the closure could protect News International from further exposure and legal cases.
trailmonkeyFull Memberno i’m not having that. they’ve closed the n.o.w as a deeply felt act of contrition.
ernie_lynchFree MemberSurely its time for campaign to stop the sun rising next week
Good luck. Everyone will want a historical last ever edition of The News Of The World this Sunday. And everyone will want a historical first ever edition of The Sun On Sunday the following Sunday.
I know I will.
projectFree MemberWhat we now need is a serious investigation, by an investigative newspaper, that dishes the dirt, gets people thinking and the culprits sacked or imprisoned, like which has happened in the past.
Sadly Rupert just closed it.
PiefaceFull MemberIf voicemails were deleted and / or resulting in investigations being hampered, people should be sent to prison, not sacked.
Anyway, what about the ‘Sun day’?
