    Hi all,

I have a ’09 Kona Caldera I love but the handlebars need to be higher for a more comfortable riding position.

My current Reba forks hava a 192mm steerer and I’d like to get some new forks with a longer steerer and add more spacers to bring the handlebar up. Is there a max length for the steerer? Also is there a max number/ length of spacers? I want to make sure that it wont affect the bike too much.

    Thanks,

    Leon

P.S. The steerer normally has a thread that a allen key screws into to hold a cap in place. If you cut it, how do you sort out this thread as I presume its just a hollow tube?

the cap screw bolt goes into a star fangled nut you fit a new one or hit it lower to cut the steerer. New ones wont have one fitted SH may have, You can also use a hope head doctor or similar.

No maximum length of steerer that you can fit

If you have flat bars you can try riser bars or a stem with a degree rise.

I’d take a trip to your local bike shop to get some advice and help.

this ^. Failing that, a much cheaper approach would be to buy a new stem or bars with a higher rise

A new fork has 300mm steerer IIRC, but you don’t want to run 100mm spacers.

    High stem/bars as above.

Not sure how good those are off road, esp for gnar riders.

    No and I never would.

As I suggested earlier, go and get some proper advice and help from your LBS, they’ll be able to actually look at your bike and suggest the best way to sort your issue out. Don’t rely upon bodges to make it work
