We've just had a combi boiler heat exchanger replaced as it had clogged with central heating gunge (Approx 1cm flakes of magnetite (sp?)). They recommended we fit a Magnaclean filter (£250ish), to catch any future gunge and stop it happening again. Whats the general opinion of this, do they do the job? Is there anything else available?

They retail at about 90 quid and fitting is mega easy. 250 is expensive really.
If it's that bad though, you probably should look at replacing your radiators, doing a powerflush and adding some inhibitor to the system.
The problem shouldn't be happening in the first place really.
I prefer spirovent myself, it's not magnetic so will catch all loose particles

some people swear by them, others dont bother.
there are many similar products on the market – fernox do one, spirovent as above.

    clicky for price of magnaclean

even if he adds 50% for profit,
add 2 hours labour(max)……..£250 is a bit pricey. Maybe ask for a labour only price and see what he says.
