No direct local authority experience, but we have just been told our department in an obscure part of central government needs to lose 40 staff out of 200 by the end of June – pretty sure we can cope.
I have a concern at the time frame these cuts have to be delivered in, but there is plenty of scope for improvement in “many” areas of the public sector. When Manchester council were squealing like a stuck pig the other week it was pointed out that they were only having the government funding pegged back to what it was in 2006, they had other income streams that weren’t being cut, they were sat on £100 million in the bank and their chief exec was paid more than the PM.
