Can we merge this with the thread on Ned’s Atomic Dustbin?

Northwind, 12,000 sounds low. According to the google 22,400 people work in the nuclear industry in the North West.

Wrap it up in the glass and concrete and stainless steel (as it will be anyway) and drop it in a subduction zone on the ocean floor. Gets sucked in to the mantle.

Aye, ‘cos the casing will withstand the grinding pressure of being trapped between two continents, and if the case does break, oceanic circulation won’t spread it globally. Whose subduction zone did you have in mind – Japan? Chile?
Working in the local secondary school (Cleator Moor kids are lovely – all of ’em – fact), we’ve been involved in a lot of consultation – which as Mikewsmith said has been extensive.
Question 1 is whether or not it’s needed.
If it’s been established that it is, then it’s the sensible location. They’ve been studying the geology for years – I’m looking at a section of a rock core from the project on my desk now.
There’s a lot of folk here bleating about “Oh no, not the beautiful Lake District” etc, etc. If you’re young and you live here, you have a different view. It’s a working landscape, shaped over thousands of years by industry. We need jobs and a future. The surest way to destroy the Lake District is to wrap it cotton wool, so that the only people who can afford to live here are second homers and those moving in with a massive pension pot, earned elsewhere.
I’m not pro the repository, but don’t just setimentally bleat on about it because you enjoy coming here for a weekend once in a while.
Tourists will see nothing of it and it’s not like it’s waste that isn’t already sat around ‘in’ the Lake District.

The human race will be extinct by the time the geology causes a problem.

    In which case **** it

It wasn’t the word I had in mind, but the same result.

The 12000 is just in the national park so comparing that with the entire north west region is obviously going to give uncomparable figures.

The Lakes is a very wonderful place with loads of nice folk in it.

    BUT

There is also a significant minority of nasty corrupt and evil folk in places and positions of influence and authority. Many public projects in my neck of the woods (Broughton in Furness) are attempted by bullying, threats, lies and malfeasance and not by consensus and agreement with the people who own the land involved. The authorities with power to curtail these activities bend over backwards to minimise the effect of any action on the wrong doers, and other councillors and worthies turn a blind eye and do nothing. If you, as an individual, try and do something to stop unlawful behaviour by these folk, you are made to feel very uncomfortable. It can be a shit place

Yes, it’s a beautiful place but there is a nasty dark side to it.

Perhaps it is getting what it deserves!

…………..and I weep for it because I am deeply attached to it.

If it’s unlawful, take it to the Police. Everywhere has wide boys and bullies. You’re not really suggesting that a few bullying councillors can get the green light for a nuclear repository?

In fairness, that could apply pretty much anywhere….
