As the UK summer is now over and I want to do longer rides on my CX bike I need to put guards on it.
Looking at the “Crud Road Racer” mudguard set which gets good reviews on CRC.
Does anyone have any experience of these or an alternative they would recommend?

    Thanks very muchly!

I found them impossible to fit to my Jake as there’s no brake to attach them to.

Thanks for that. What did you go for as an alternative or did you not bother?

Initially found the Crud Road Racer ok, fitted last winter and they perform very well when they’re not falling apart.

Easy to fit IF you follow the instructions, don’t rub, offer good protection.

However I’ve lost two front extentions, which break if you breathe on them too hard, never mind touch them with your toe (avoid if you have overlap) and broke one stay putting the bike in the car.

I would have recommended them wholeheartedly when spares were sent out on request for the price of a stamp.

    BUT:
Now Mr Tomkins has started charging between £4.50 and £6.50 for spares packs, I’m beginning to think they’re a bit of a liability and will replace them with Race Blades next time they fail.

    EDIT:
And, of course, as pointed out above, you need a caliper brake to attach them, doh!

I fitted some cheapo road style full guards. I had to liberate a long bolt to attach it to the fork, and as there are no eyelets for guards at the front dropouts I threaded the skewer through the metal bits and just tightened it all up. I appreciate that this is stupid/dangerous/will have a child’s face off but it worked for me and kept me dryer all winter. I coupled the guards with a rack on the back. If you’re going to ruin the look of a nice bike, you might as well be practical with it!

The crud guards are fine on the road bike but I use sks guards on my Jake the snake in commuter mode, tried other but sks are definitely the best.
