Looking to buy a new front wheel, and fancy the look of the Hope 20Five rim. Just wondering if they are manufactured in the UK. No reason to think they wouldn’t be, just cant find it on the website.

I believe the spokes and nipples (Sapim?) are the only non-UK made bit of their wheels.

Got a rear a year or so back dinged on first or second ride on a not particularly gnarly ride, seriously under-impressed with it

Thanks CFH, that’s what I thought.

Kilo, am looking for road use really, so not too worried about that. Though interesting to know. Was it just going out of true, or an actual dent in the rim?

By far the worst product in the Hope catalogue are the rims, I’m pretty sure they’re extruded in the UK, unlikely to be in the Hope factory.

Most people seem to get DT XM481 or EX511 rims with Hope hubs. Seems to be good value and top quality!

I’m a heavier guy and tend to brake things. I’ve got EX511 and hope pro 4 hubs coming soon.

Don’t think they make the rims themselves- you need pretty specific extrusion kit for that. The 1st gen ones definitely weren’t.

    Dent in the rim.

I thought the rims were the only finished component they imported. Hope make lots of good stuff but the rims are not up to par. I’d get DT Swiss for MTB – I know very little about road bikes…

I’m not looking for full Hope wheels, just the rim. Hub will be Son28 dynamo, Hope dont do them. And Sapim spokes.

It was the fancy extrusion kit that made me think they wouldn’t be made here.

I think the grips are close, but you’re re probably right. And the rims, soft as they are, make their wheels ridiculously heavy.

What are hopes 35 carbon bars like? Any one?

No idea where the rims are made but extrusion dies aren’t especially expensive (have been in an extrusion plant near Mansfield so stuff is certainly possible in the UK). I seem to remember a bike mag article years ago that showed Hope caliper blanks of the time were sliced off extruded bar of approximately the correct shape.

What do you mean by “manufactured”? Was the ore mined in the UK? Was the ore smelted in the UK? Was the alloying done in the UK? Was the extrusion and machining done in the UK? Were the spokes and nipples and hubs and bearings and seals made in the UK? Were the rims laced to hubs in the UK? Was it put in a box in the UK that has a flag printed on it?

If the rim and hub were extruded and machined in the UK from imported aluminium, then finished with bearings, seals, spokes, and nipples that were imported, does that count as made in the UK?

My rule is if a company doesn’t state explicitly that a product of theirs is made in their home country, it probably isn’t (particularly western companies). Ring them and ask.

Hope rims could be made next door, I still wouldn’t buy them.

had the enduro 26″ wheels dented the rim peddling uphill at low speed on the smallest stone, love the brake’s and hubs, not the rims

    My 20fives have been fine

I don’t think we mine bauxite in the UK

I bought a pair of 29er Tech Enduro rims in March as wiggle had some for £22 each. My first wheel build onto some Pro 2 hubs I already had.

I’d heard all the ‘made of cheese’ stuff but thought I’d give them a go as they were cheap. They might not be the widest or lightest but they’ve been fine for me.  If I was paying full price I’d probably go DT Swiss for MTB but wouldn’t have a problem with Hope rims for road or gravel. Weight depending…

Just heard back from Hope. The rims are manufactured in Taiwan.

    Thanks for everyone’s input.

Out of interest, DT rims (and hubs) are made in the far east, Taiwan again I think.
